(Continued from page 2) on-time or before. But he wasn’t contacted until three weeks before the lease was up.
“I was like a chicken with no head calling around and seeing where I could go,” said Alcala. “Anna is growing so rent went up drastically so we couldn’t stay there. So we found this place.”
The building they purchased was 105 E. Haning Street which is one of three buildings that remain from the original town design from the 1870s. Most people in town still refer to the location as “Chisum’s” as it was Chisum’s One Stop for 32 years from 19571989. It most recently was the home of Advantage Business Machines owned by Todd Creekmore who recently moved their location to Woods Street in Sherman.
Growing up in L.A., Alcala was the son of upholstery shop owners. He worked in sales and delivery for the family but did not earn a paycheck. So he decided to get married and got a job in the medical field as a technician.
“We did that for a couple of years. I used to be on-call and in L.A. the traffic was horrible and when I got home I was in a bad mood so I told my wife we needed a change,” Alcala said.
Originally wanting to move to Arizona, he visited his brother who had moved to McKinney and they liked North Texas enough to buy a house move their daughters from L.A. schools to where they are now in Prosper ISD. Their daughters are Adeline, Angelina, Alissa, and Alexa who will stay in their school as Robert and Rosie will keep their family in McKinney for the foreseeable future.
