Air 'Dogs?
The Howe Bulldogs have been known as a ground-and-pound football team since 2014 when Dale West arrived with his slot-T offense under then-Head Coach Zack Hudson. When Hudson left for Mabank and Howe hired Bill Jehling to take over as head coach, he kept the same philosophy with a wing-T and slot-T style of offensive attack on Friday nights. Jehling, however, has had a change of heart recently and feels like the opportunity to play summer 7-on-7 games was a perfect time to implement a passing game for Howe - the first in six seasons

"Even though we're going wide open right now with 7-on-7, we're still keeping that wing-T philosophy," said Jehling "We're a running team first, but we've just got to spread it out and people out of the box With the athletes we've got coming, we want to utilize them in a fashion that they're going to be successful in "
Howe's varsity played Bonham and Tom Bean in the first week of 7-on-7 action and defeated Bonham and lost to Tom Bean The Bulldogs then traveled to Dallas Shelton and played the private school to a 14-13 loss Jehling says that Howe went with 10 kids, whereas Shelton was using two platoons with seven kids on offense and seven kids on defense
"Our kids competed and played hard They have bought into it and are liking it a lot," said Jehling
This past week, Howe played and defeated Tom Bean and Bonham while losing to Whitewright Jehling says he was shuffling a lot of kids on the field during the Whitewright game. Missing several key players, Howe still scored three or four times and Jehling was happy with the performance
Layton Elvington, last year's starting quarterback at the beginning of the season is trying to grab that position back He has steady competition from Jordan Jones, Dylan Hughs, and Parker Pecina
Jehling is excited about the future with the junior varsity, and middle

The talent pool in the freshman class has the coaches excited The JV's first competition was last week when they played three games and won two of them
"That group can throw and catch," said Jehling "(Matt) Hayes did great, (Austin) Haley each game got better and better; (Ryan) Hough is naturally good, and Braden Smith, who's going to be a sophomore - it's his first year playing football and he did really well at defensive back "
The middle school is equally talented as the eighth grade played their first game against Bonham on Tuesday and scored five touchdowns to Bonham's one The seventh grade also scored five times Eighth-grade quarterback Jacob Campbell was sharp racking up massive amounts of yardage and five touchdowns and only one interception Seventh-grade quarterback Garren Lankford was equally impressive Receivers that stood out were eighth-graders Cooper Jones and Rowdy Kuykendall while Braden Ulmer and Beau Stephens stood out for the seventh grade Defensively, eighth-grader Kolin Murphy got a high grade at cornerback from the coaches
