Beckemeyer
postmaster has won quite a few awards while being here She's a 3-time winner of The Benjamin Franklin Award, the highest award given by the Postal Service She's also received two Growth Awards whereas no one else in the State of Texas has even won one She has been a state officer for the United Postmasters and Managers Association of America for 15 years, even serving as president, and is now a national officer During those years, the big city girl had many opportunities to move out of Howe She was once offered advancement to Allen and Frisco to name a few, but the color of Howe kept her home

Since she knew early on that she would never leave Howe and retire from here, she knew she could make a difference in the community Her involvement with the Howe Chamber began even before she moved here While meeting Les Bennett from Independent Bank, he invited her to a meeting at the Bluebonnet Cafe (Editor's note: now Palio's Pizza Cafe)
"The second meeting I went to was at Flesher Funeral Home (Editor's note: now Community Bible Fellowship) and they had a lunch which was a mystery meat soup That was very strange to me being
Continued from page 3 at a funeral home," said Beckemeyer "But those days in the chamber, I met Wayne Swineford - one of the nicest men We picked up trash on the side of the road, we did teacher appreciation lunches and I got to work with Robbie Mangrum We did Founders Day with the car shows and it was fun "

Beckemeyer admits during those years that the chamber was a struggle partly because the climate of city leadership was different during those times That coupled with the Great Recession destroyed the Howe Chamber and much of any business life in Howe for a number of years
"It was an uphill battle, but I know everyone one in the chamber was working hard for the good of Howe," said Beckemeyer
She was at the corner post office when a car ran through the police station in downtown Howe and destroyed the buildings where the free parking area is now She also remembers the day the tall Ferguson building fell in the street Those events somewhat echoed the times in Howe
"But Howe has had a vision in the last few years that I never thought I'd see," said Beckemeyer "All these years I've stared at that building and that church across Highway 5 from the post office I never thought I'd get to see that church get restored."

But it was during her first term as an active chamber volunteer that she received the Norma J Wallace Citizen of the Year in 2006. When the current chamber reformed in 2015 with a young vibrant group of board members, Beckemeyer served once again, but this time in a different role - the experienced adviser
"When we started in 2015, we initially stated that we didn't want anyone from the previous chamber board because we wanted a fresh start," said City of Howe Director of Economic Development Monte
Walker "But her experience, energy, and passion for Howe were just too much to pass up She's been a rock in our organization."
Beckemeyer's 2001 swearing-in as postmaster took place on Founders Day and she had former legendary Howe Postmasters James Davis and Harold Taylor in attendance which she says was a great honor
"They both were super polite and I have the utmost respect for both of them," said Beckemeyer

Taylor was elected to the Howe Hall of Honor a year ago and Beckemeyer was nominated this year but fell short in the voting One would imagine her time is just page 8
Bulldogs win final game; snap streak
The season finale was exactly what Head Coach Ryan Moreau had expected to see from the Bulldogs just before the start of the season Mason Riggs, Howe's senior pitcher went seven strong innings and his hitters were patient and took what Blue Ridge was giving them which ended up in 10 walks and 12 runs

Senior Spencer Akins led Howe with four runs scored on three walks and two hits including a double Howe only had three other hits in the game, but the Dogs took advantage of a wild performance by
Ross Feagans who walked 11 hitters in five innings
Meanwhile, Riggs threw 104 pitches, only walked three, allowed six hits, three earned runs, and struck out three hitters Howe put together an 8-run first inning thanks in part to a Garrett Grigg 2-run homer on a line drive to left to make it 6-0
Jake Catching and Dyson Dillard the remaining hits for Howe in the 12-4 win.
