Few people know how the modern business card evolved, although all of us have lots of them in our rolodexes, desk drawers, card files, and card cases The forerunners of the current business cards are bearer cards, calling or visiting

These f of atus main forms

Bearer cards were used in England and in France in the late sixteenth century They were actually legal documents signed by gentlemen to communicate obligations, such as conveying debt, promissory notes, or other messages of intent Personal calling cards were used as early as fifteenth century China and seventeenth century France when aristocrats and royalty began to use them. Eighteenth century English merchants started using trade cards as advertisement for their businesses These trade cards bore the merchant’s name and address of the business and directions of how to find the store

Today people carry business cards as well as personal cards Personal cards have the name, home address, and telephone number of the person Business cards have employer information, address, telephone numbers, web addresses, and job titles Business cards were initially printed with black ink on white card stock, but colorful cards are more popular now Technology has allowed for innovations such as cards printed on plastic, wood, metal, and on CDs; folded cards; and cards with photos on them There are even Vcards which are digital business cards where people can save the contact information into their computers Because the price of printing cards and the range of layout templates and stock designs has increased, it is easy to cost-effectively distinguish yourself from others

This business card was used by J F Thompson who was a Dining Car Steward working out of the T and P passenger station in Fort Worth Texas It has the red logo of the Texas and Pacific Railway The Texas and Pacific Railway Company was created by federal charter in 1871 with the purpose of building a southern transcontinental railroad between Marshall, Texas and San Diego California. Service from Marshall to Texarkana occurred in 1873 T&P had a significant foothold in Texas by the mid-1880s Construction difficulties delayed westward progress, until American financier Jay Gould acquired an interest in the railroad in 1879 The T&P never reached San Diego; instead it met the Southern Pacific at Sierra Blanca, Texas in 1881 The Missouri Pacific Railroad also controlled by Gould, leased the T&P from 1881 to 1885 and continued a cooperative relationship with the T&P after the lease ended Abilene was connected in 1881 Missouri Pacific gained majority ownership of the Texas and Pacific Railway's stock in 1928 but allowed it to continue operation as a separate entity until they were eventually merged on October 15, 1976 The merger with the Union Pacific Railroad and Missouri Pacific took place on January 1, 1997 Several reminders of the Texas and Pacific remain to this day, mainly two towering buildings which help define the southern side of Fort Worth's skyline the original station and office tower and a warehouse located to the west In 2001, the passenger platforms at the T&P station were put into use for the first time in decades as the westernmost terminus for the Trinity Railway Express, a commuter rail line connecting Fort Worth and Dallas. The passenger terminal and corporate offices have been converted into luxury condominiums

Howe has enjoyed the advantage of being on a railroad line since 1873 when the Houston and Texas Central Railway built through the area, and a railroad switch was located in the community Howe was initially called Summit because at 810 feet above sea level it was supposed to be the highest point between the Red River and the Gulf of Mexico Two businesses were located at the switch, a general store and a saloon Several houses were built to the east of the switch Jabez Haning persuaded the railroad to establish a depot on his land by donating every second lot in his newly platted town to the railroad The name of the depot, the store, and the post office were changed in 1876 to Howe after FM Howe, who worked for the Houston and Texas Central

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find a Houston and Central business card for FM Howe?

That would be quite a treasure I do have copies of FM Howe’s signature in books he owned that are in the archives of the University of Houston Someday I hope to actually go look at Mr Howe’s possessions in the archive
