Fundraiser is utterly successful

Back in early October the Howe Athletic Booster Club, Howe High School, and Bob Utter Ford partnered for a program entitled "Drive 4 Ur School " The result was a check in the amount of $4,450 to be split between the boosters and the activity fund at Howe High School

"This is the most, by far, for a firsttime promotion by a school that we've done," said Carl King of Bob Utter Ford "The average is around $1,500 to $1,800 for other schools "

During the first event, the community doesn't really understand what you're doing, but Howe had a lot of help and organization

The program pays Howe ISD and the boosters a certain amount per test drives taken Howe ISD promoted the event nicely and constructed it in such a way that teachers, students, and community members could take the test drives in a well-flowing manner

"The second one that we do is usually far better than the first just page 9

ut your antiques and with Georgia Caraway

work just like they sound – hold them up to a strong light and you will have a sight to behold

One type of hold-to-light postcard comes die-cut, which ing a ht s have ise to le hen e card is held to the light This leads to many surprising postcard discoveries!

Some transition from day to night images, some change color, and some change their image altogether

Joseph Koehler of New York City printed many hold-to-light postcards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with scenes of Chicago with light up windows, street lights and more Koehler first published a set of these at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair

Many hold-to-light postcards are quite rare, and their prices can run anywhere from $10 to $500 and even more The diecuts usually cost the most

You won’t find anything like these postcards being made today, so finding one in a vintage collection is a special find

This hold-to-light postcard depicts a man in his robe, slippers, and night cap stealing a kiss from the maid who is holding a wooden spoon When you hold it to the light, you see the shadow of his old “battleax” wife dressed in black peering over his shoulder with a snarling look on her face He is in deep trouble!

“This stolen kiss will cost you dear;

It’s bound to start domestic strife

For ere that kiss is yours, I fear You’ll have to reckon with your wife ”

This colorful undivided back postcard is postmarked October 7, 1907, Madisonburg, PA It has a one-cent Benjamin Franklin cancelled stamp It was sent To Miss Margaret Jacobs, Centre Hall, PA The sender wrote his initials J?B in pencil on the front under the poem

I put this on eBay to see if there was any interest, if not, the straying husband and his wife will be coming to Howe Mercantile for a visit

Georgia Caraway and her friends operate the Howe Mercantile at 107-109 ½ East Haning Store hours are Thursday through Saturday 12 noon until 8 p m All five of Georgia’s Denton history books and her book on taking care of your antiques and collectibles are available at Howe Mercantile She hopes her next book will be the history of Howe.
