Thanksgiving may now be in the rearview mirror, but the message of gratefulness, blessings, and thanks from the Howe Mercantile is something that lasts throughout the

Christmas very small tough encourage SHOP every competition does stores as the merchandise we offer is unique. And browsing is sometimes a luxury in these hectic holiday shopping times. We are so thankful to have many loyal and new customers who keep coming in to see what treasures they can find. And we are so grateful for Abby’s Restaurant and Gabriela’s Cantina for drawing folks downtown with their yummy meals. We stay open Thrusday through Saturday from noon to 8:00 at night because of them.

So here goes the history of Thanksgiving maybe a little late:

While the idea of giving thanks and celebrating the harvest was popular in certain parts of the country, it was not an annual holiday until President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. Since turkey is a uniquely American bird, it gained traction as the Thanksgiving meal of choice for Americans thereafter.

In an online article, Barbara Crews made this observation about Thanksgiving collectibles, "Thanksgiving tends to get overlooked as it's sandwiched between Halloween and the Christmas holidays. There are things to buy and collect for Thanksgiving, you just have to look a little harder to find them.”

Thanksgiving and Turkey

Collectibles: Then and Now by John Wesley Thomas provides nearly 900 photos depicting 3,400 images ranging from the nineteenth century to the present day. It is available on Amazon.

Look for postcards, turkey ice cream molds, Gurley candles in the shape of pilgrims and turkeys, cookie jars, platters, plates, decorations, candy containers, decanters, toys, and turkey calls. Precious Moments offers a Thanksgiving Village.

The turkey itself is exhaustively portrayed in ceramic, glass, pottery, paper, and wood. Also featured are items related to special Thanksgiving Day events, such as football games, parades, and "turkey trots." (See last year’s Thanksgiving column for turkey trot information.) This book is the first of its kind and will be the ultimate reference for all who treasure the deep traditions of this cherished holiday. Start your collection of Thanksgiving decorations now.

Again we are grateful to our customers. And look forward to another year of serving you.

Georgia Caraway and her friends operate the Howe Mercantile at 107-109 East Haning. Store hours are Thursday through Saturday 12 noon until 8 p.m. All five of Georgia’s Denton history books and her book on taking care of your antiques and collectibles are available at Howe Mercantile. She hopes her next book will be the history of Howe.
