Please check with each church for any possible changes back to Howe after Fryar's announcement After McQueen returned, the two were young enough to feel as if they had a hand in the return of the coach they wanted But to the shock of the two young men, McQueen returned to Howe not the same as he was as an assistant - he was a hardnosed disciplinarian who demanded accountability and commanded respect Some of the players that loved him in 1988 had a hard time with his transformation of 1990 Players were not used to running for not saying, "yes sir, no sir" throughout the community Players were also asked to sign an "athletic contract" that required them to run 25 miles to get back in the athletic program if they were caught drinking alcohol After the punishment, they had to be voted back into the program by their peers

McQueen was very tough on his players at times, but he also was personal with each player and told them that he loved them

"It was a bit uncomfortable the first several times that he would tell you that he loved you," said Monte Walker, a former player for McQueen

"But I learned that you can break down a lot of barriers when you tell someone you love them That message was exactly what we needed to hear from him "

Some of the young returning players, not knowing how the coaching industry works, felt perhaps as if they were unwanted, unworthy, and rejected by Fryar However, it became evident to the players that it was not McQueen's intention to use these players to only advance his own agenda When he told his players he loved them, it became personal To the players, it removed the threat of losing their coach if the Pilot Point job came open To them, it meant that he was there because of what he always said, "I love each and every one of you guys."

His team knew that he loved them, but they also knew that there was no gray area With the tough love transition and transformation, McQueen showed what he would eventually become known for - "the turnaround " Howe started the season with a 2-4 record but rebounded to make the playoffs back when only

Well, as a once-famous actor said, “I’m baaaack!” I was so involved in two large estate sales in Denton for the last several months I did not have the energy to research and write my column for the Howe Enterprise I have missed it and am excited that Grayson Publishing allowed me to return to my space.

Two pieces of some of the loveliest glass included in the last sale was the highly desirable Burmese styleglass

Fredrick Shirley at the Mt Washington Glass Works in New Bedford, Massachusetts, developed Burmese glass in 1885 It is a type of two-toned opaque-colored art glass, shading from yellow to a deep peachy-pink Some pieces have a patterned mold design. Some have either the rare “shiny” finish or the more common “satin” finish A few Burmese pieces were decorated with pictures or coralene (glass beads) or applied glass flowers of colored Burmese glass

The glass can function as tableware, as small, ornamental vases, lamps, and baskets, or as dressing table pieces

Two-toned glass was very popular in the 1880s and Burmese glass found favor with Queen Victoria

On the Queen's visit to the United States, the Mt Washington Glass Company made her a teacup and saucer When it was presented to her, she exclaimed, "It looks like a Burmese sunset " That is where the name Burmese came from for the glass. The design painted on the cup and saucer by the famous Mt Washington artist Timothy Canty became known as Queen's Burmese design Subsequently Mt Washington Glass Company patented Queen's-design Burmese

The British company of Thomas Webb & Sons was licensed in 1886 to produce the glass Their version was known as Queen's Burmese

Burmese is a uranium glass The formula to produce Burmese glass contains uranium oxide with tincture of gold added The uranium oxide produced the inherent soft yellow color of Burmese glass Because of the added gold, the characteristic pink blush of color of Burmese was fashioned by re-heating the object in the furnace The length of time in the furnace determines the intensity of the color Strangely, if the object is subjected to the heat again, it returns to the original yellow color

Alternatively Burmese may be called canary yellow, pale yellow, canary yellow, creamy yellow, lemon yellow, primrose yellow, or warm yellow along with an equal range of varied pink.

Glass factories Thomas Webb, Mt Washington, Pairpoint, and Gunderson made Burmese-type wares The U S company, Fenton Art Glass, made Burmese after 1970

Dr Georgia Caraway, former director of the Denton County Museums for 14 years, and her friends operate the Howe Mercantile at 107 East Haning Store hours are Thursday through Saturday 12 noon until 8 p m She has written five Denton history books and one book on taking care of your antiques and collectibles All of her books, including her latest, North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, are available at Howe Mercantile She hopes her next book will be the history of Howe

two district teams made the postseason That year Howe shocked Celina in the first round by advancing on a 14-14 tie through penetrations The following week his team advanced past Olney on a 10-10 tie which the game was decided on first downs His team went from 2-4 to being the final 16 remaining in the state Howe was there for the third time in six years

What McQueen inherited from Fryar's coaching staff was Defensive Coordinator Billy Hill

In 1991 Hill's aggressive 50 gap defensive technique led Howe to the best defensive season since the 1940s That year McQueen and Hill led the Bulldogs to a district championship before the two left Bulldog country to take the same position at Mason to lead the Cowpunchers in 1993 and turning that program around

McQueen then led San Angelo Lake View to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years in 2003 Lake View won a district title a year later He then coached at Smithville where he won his head coaching debut there after the Tigers had lost 31 consecutive games

"We beat Weimar in our first game, and by the way people reacted, you'd have thought we won state," McQueen told The San Angelo Standard-Times in 2012

Maybe his best turnaround performance was at Lampasas where they went 0-20 while he was the athletic director and not head coach But when the district asked him to coach, he took the program to 19-14 over the next three seasons leading the Badgers to their first district championship in 22 years in 2011 before he retired from high school coaching But as McQueen always does - he came back He led Florence for one season in 2014 before ending his coaching career at Comfort over the past three seasons

His overall record is 138-138-4 and his record at Howe was 16-162 It's an amazing accomplishment to have the overall record he has while being put in the situations he was in

"God never put me in Southlake Carroll or Highland Park," McQueen told The San Angelo Standard-Times in 2012 "I always joked that I grew up in the white ghetto in Ballinger, but I always had everything I needed Coaching those blue-collar kids reminded me of growing up in Ballinger You had to work to get what you wanted Nothing was given to you

If those kids got something as a reward, they appreciated it If you put their names on the backs of their jerseys, they thought that was the biggest thing in the world "

Joey McQueen only coached at Howe for three seasons as a head coach and one season as an assistant But his imprint is still seen throughout Howe by those he influenced He wasn't easy to play for. Kids, young adults, and adults all over Texas have stories about his tough love Not too many people get to coach Texas High School football for 25 seasons - only those who make an impact on people Due directly to McQueen, some Howe youth coaches constantly tell their players that they love them

HHS Band performs well at UIL State Ensemble

The Pride of Howe, also known as the Howe High School Band, sent 26 members to Pflugerville, Texas on Memorial Day Weekend to compete in the UIL Texas State Solo/Ensemble Contest To qualify for this competition students had to receive a 1st division on their Class 1 ensemble or their Class 1 memorized solo Judges for this contest are typically college level instrumental instructors and the standards for adjudication are extremely high

Howe had four ensembles and six soloists performing for adjudication Of those, two performances received the highest rating Receiving a first division and a gold medal for her xylophone solo was Bethany Masters

According to HHS Band Director Angie Liss, the judge had high praise for Masters and commented on her high level of musical maturity

"He kept encouraging her to major in music after graduation and told her if she decided to do that to strongly consider attending his university and be a member of his percussion studio," said Liss in a written statement

Also receiving a medal and 1st division for their performance was the clarinet choir comprised of Kindle Catching, Kelsey Pierce,

Shellby Armstrong, Mikayla Hudek, Erin Catching, Korbyn Thompson, Lannah Gardner, David Huerta, Cameron Garner, and Jordan Griffin

Liss says that one particular judge that they've had experience with in the past was known to be extremely critical and unrewarding with her 1st division ratings However, this season she was visibly moved by the performance and told the students that the performance "touched her heart "

Four of the students received silver medals for their solo performances Those students were Greg Snider - trumpet, Kobi Zolfaghari - trumpet, Josiah Argueta - french horn, and Mitchell Webb - marimba

The brass quintet of Greg Snider, Mikayla Doty, Josiah Argueta, Brooke Robinson, and T J Knight as well as the brass sextet of Kobi Zolfaghari, Jonathan Meneses, Sheila Finney, Kriston Harris, Connor Christian and Robert Rhew received a 2nd division/excellent rating for their ensemble performances

Other students competing at the contest in a different clarinet ensemble were Valerie Langford and Valeria Bastida
