Price Daniel, Sr, had a distinguished career serving Texas and the nation By 1952, he had already served as an army officer, Texas House Speaker, and attorney general At the age of 42 in 1952, his political career was only beginning with his election to the U. S. Senate.

With his inauguration in January 1953, he jumped into his new position He pushed through legislation giving coastal states the mineral rights to coastal waters, legislation he made a priority in his 1952 election While in the Senate, he also pushed through strict new laws regarding illicit drug use

In 1956, he decided to return to Texas and run for governor It was a crowded field and a close contest, with Daniel challenged by liberal and conservative candidates Daniel won the initial Democratic Primary and narrowly defeated former Judge Ralph Yarborough in the Democratic runoff He resigned his Senate seat and began his tenre as governor in January 1957

Daniel’s years as governor were years of looking ahead He worked to modernize the state in many ways He approved new highway construction He pushed ethics reforms for state officials and lobbyists, and with Lyndon Johnson, helped bring NASA’s space center to Houston History was one of his great passions, and he spearheaded an effort to create the State Library and Archives Building in Austin to house the state’s important records and documents, dedicated in 1962

Looking at the growth of cities and the demands of farmers and ranchers, Daniel also moved to create more water projects to increase the state’s supply By the time he left office, dozens of reservoir projects were already planned.

In spite of the state’s oil wealth, Texas faced serious money problems in Daniel’s third term In 1961, the legislature proposed a 2% sales tax to make up for the funding shortfalls Daniel had fought the sales tax in his years in

In 1967, Lyndon Johnson, now president, still looked to Daniel for his expertise He was named to a position on the National Security Council as head the Office of Emergency Preparedness Johnson also named Daniel as a liaison between the White House and the nation’s governors

Daniel’s family became deeply involved in politics as well His younger brother, William, served three terms in the state legislature and later served as territorial governor of Guam from 1961 to 1963 His eldest son, Price Daniel, Jr, deeply admired his father By the time he was 12 in the 1950s, he was making speeches and campaigning for his father In 1968, he was elected to the same legislative seat his father held and eventually became Speaker of the House by 1976, just as his father had years before

In 1971, Gov Preston Smith named the former governor and Senator to an unexpired position on the Texas Supreme Court With this, Daniel had now served in all three branches of state government He was elected to a full term on the court in 1972 and re-elected in 1974 He decided not to seek re-election in 1978.

When he retired at the end of his term in January 1979, he capped a remarkable four decades of elected service. He worked as a private attorney afterward, providing free service to the Alabama-Coushatta tribe He hoped to enjoy a quiet, peaceful retirement at his ranch in his native Liberty County. But it was not to be

In 1981, Price Daniel, Jr –respected citizen, attorney, and father of three -- was shot and killed by his wife in a bizarre incident The scandal shocked the entire state And the entire Daniel Family was left in deep mourning

The elder Daniel was deeply hurt by the loss, for the bond between a father and his son is unbreakable His health declined in the years afterward Price Daniel, Sr, died on his ranch of a stroke in 1988 at the age of 78

Daniel was widely honored for his service Baylor University named its public service award after the former governor and senator A prison unit in Snyder is named after him The Price Daniel State Office Building is located near the State Capitol in Austin His home is now a museum

Jesse Stonebarger turns 81-yearsold today and last Wednesday was given a retirement party from Howe ISD where he has been employed since 2000

It is not the first job in which Stonebarger has retired from and knowing him, it may not be his last He started with the Burlington Cotton Mill for 26 years until it closed its doors

He then went to McKinney and worked for the ice cream plant, Specialty Foods back when

McKinney wasn't the forearm of Dallas He was there for three years before going to Oscar Mayer in Sherman He worked there for nine years before they closed their doors also

At that point, he was hired by Howe ISD in maintenance and had a great career that lasted 17 years

He is married to Mary and they have grandchildren in the ISD - Elijah, Noah, and Jacob Campbell

Both the seventh and eighth grade teams traveled to Bells for a byeweek matchup. Tate Harvey was heavy on everyone's mind Both teams wore blue tape around their wrist in honor of Harvey Bells was also very supportive and led a prayer in the middle of their field with all the teams before the eighth grade game

Howe's seventh grade faced their toughest matchup yet The team trailed 14-0 at half but came out a different team in the second half

Austin Haley hooked up with Ryan Hough for a touchdown on a critical fourth and goal that put the score at 14-6 With 40 seconds left in the 4th quarter, Haley, dawning Tate Harvey's jersey number15 jersey, ran it in on a quarterback sneak on fourth and goal Carson Daniels took the toss on the 2-point conversion try but came up short Bells took the win, 14-12

The Howe eighth grade faced some early special team blunders once again and found themselves trailing 20-0 at the end of the first quarter Kelyan Jaresh scored the team's first touchdown of the season on a physical run The team played much better in the second half, holding The Panthers to only six points Final score, Bells 42 - Howe 6

Fifth and sixth grade Dogs enter playoffs undefeated

Howe's third and fourth grade lose to Trenton in heartbraker, 7-6

The Howe third and fourth grade Bulldogs played Trenton at S&S Garrett Rodgers caused a fumble, recovered by Devon Wallace to end Trenton's first possession Rodgers then took it 52 yards to the endzone for a 6-0 Howe lead

The defenses traded four-and-out possessions for the entire third quarter Howe had an opportunity to close the game with a Rodgers 8

The Dogs held Trenton scoreless with two different goal line stands of first and goal But with 5 1 seconds remaining, Trenton was finally able to get across the goal line to tie the game at 6-6 The Tigers successfully pushed across the point-after-attempt to win the game, 7-6

The Bulldogs will open the playoffs next Saturday versus Whitewright

The fifth and sixth grade Howe Bulldogs continued their dominance on Saturday with a 346 win over the Bells Panthers

Howe now enters the playoffs with a 7-0 record and have outscored their opponents 204-14

Howe's first score was set up by a Gage Troxtell run that appeared to be a 45-yard touchdown, however the tiniest blade of fake turf grabbed his whole body and took him down Jacob Campbell would finish off the scoring drive with a 27-yard pass to Cooper Jones Howe led 6-0 early

A Braden Ulmer 30-yard run set up a 10-yard Troxtell touchdown and Howe led, 12-0 The 'Dogs appeared to have an 18-0 lead going to the half, but a fumble ended the drive

Howe scored quickly in the third quarter when Campbell hit Rowdy Kuykendall on a 36-yard pass to extend the Howe lead

The two-point conversion from Campbell to Kuykendall extended the lead to 20-0

Howe recovered an onside kick and Campbell scampered 50 yards on fourth and long for the score Howe led 28-0 after a Cambell to Kuykendall PAT

Howe's final score came on another fourth and long situation with Campbell going the distance That gave Howe their final tally of 34 points

Bells was able to punch it in the endzone on the final play of the game

Jordan Blaylock quarterbacked most of the offense in the second half with Ashton Trevino and Noah Riley getting carries

Howe will play Whitewright in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday in Blue Ridge at 10:30 am

Band Continued from page 1 evening performance under the stadium lights to a 'band fan' audience and our kids certainly stepped up with a much better run in the finals "

Howe received many positive comments from the judges with some very good constructive criticism and ideas for improving their performance They also got great video and photos of the band moms that helped them see and hear the little details that are needed to work on

The band will compete next Saturday in two different contests The first performance is at 10:30 am in Princeton and the second is at 3:30 in Ponder
