CAMP DRAGONFLY –Children’s Grief Camp

October 20-22, 2017

Sherman, Texas, September 25, 2017

Registration for Camp Dragonfly is now open. Camp Dragonfly is a weekend retreat, led by professional clinicians and trained staff, for children ages 8-12 who have suffered the loss of a loved one. All activities at Camp Dragonfly are designed to help children heal and live successfully after loss During the weekend, campers have the opportunity to participate in art activities, games, nature hikes, discussions, and a campfire with s’mores

“Campers learn ways to process feelings and treasure memories. Camp is not about forgetting, it is about healing We use exercises to help the children learn to process grief and then fun activities to practice the coping skills they are learning,” said Nancy Jackson, Community Development Director and Camp Director “Children grieve differently than adults Some children have behavioral problems, some struggle with schoolwork, some become argumentative or fearful, some hesitate to be away from a parent, and many don’t like to be alone ”

Children dealing with grief often feel isolated and feel that no one understands One of the goals of Camp Dragonfly is to give the campers a chance to be with others who can relate to their feelings of grief and sadness to help them realize that they are not alone “My child very much enjoyed camp, she has always felt different from other children and camp seemed to make her feel like she belonged,” said a parent whose daughter attended a previous session “The grief counselor I talked to was awesome! She was very honest and straightforward with me She even asked how I was handling everything ”

Parents participate in a mini-camp designed to not only provide them with resources, but insight as to how children grieve The goal is to help the parents understand that a child experiences grief differently and help parents recognize and help them to cope with those behaviors

The fall session of Camp Dragonfly is scheduled for October 20-22nd at All Saints

Howe PD arrests two with cocaine on US Hi

On Sept 22 at 9:52 pm, a Howe Police Officer saw a silver Chevy Cobalt without a tag light traveling northbound on U S Highway 75 at Farmington Rd The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke with the driver 24-year-old Tyler Wade

Martinez of Durant The officer conducted a consensual search of the vehicle where cocaine was found in the passenger seat The officer located 17 6 grams of cocaine on the ground by Martinez’s feet The cocaine was stepped on and looked like someone had tried to destroy it by scooting it across the ground

Both subjects were checked through Grayson County dispatch and advised that Hamilton (driver) had a JP-2 Warrant Martinez (passenger) was arrested for PCS PG1 > 4g < 200g and Tampering with Evidence Hamilton was arrested for the warrant

Howe seventh grader injured in ATV accident

Social media was flooded on Sunday morning calling for prayers for young Tate Harvey, a Howe seventh grader who was involved in an ATV accident on Saturday night The young boy received multiple fractures of the skull that included brain bleeding with multiple contusions on his brain All prayers are encouraged for the Harvey family that has been so gracious to the Howe community over the years

Harvey is the youngest of six siblings and is a standout athlete in middle school sports

He is the son of Brice and Keri Harvey of Howe

A couple of months ago, we brought a new English Bulldog puppy into our home and he has been such a wonderful addition to our family When we bought him, they told us he was 8 weeks old, but after finally receiving his papers from the breeder, we noticed he was actually only 6 weeks old at the time He was a healthy bruiser and we would laugh at him stumbling and being uncoordinated, but now we realize it was just because he was such a young baby We would sit on the front porch in the evenings and watch him investigate around the front yard He was so happy as he would roll around in the grass and explore his new surroundings, but when he would hear a loud commotion or a noisy car passing by, it would scare him and he would come running to us After a while, he gradually became more used to the traffic sounds and lawn mowers and eventually it did not bother him at all. As I was spending time with him one evening, it dawned on me that our conscience is also sensitive to what we see, hear, and think about and how each of us can choose to remain tender-hearted or we can become calloused and indifferent When we are confronted with sin, maybe we should consider running to God for protection

When we consider our spiritual life, we have been called to guard and protect our conscience from the darkness of iniquity A huge part of accepting Jesus as the Lord

Protecting our spiritual sensitivity

of our life is to respect His holiness and for us likewise to attempt to live a pure life You see, the idea is that God hates anything that resembles sin and we are also to feel the same way no matter how tempting and desirable it may seem Unfortunately, many individuals are convinced this concept is old fashioned and not really that important Have you noticed lately that people in general do not want to hear about self-discipline or messages that contain topics about changing the way we think and live? In our defense, we consider this intrusion as meddling and no ones business, including our creator. The Bible defines this as conviction which are the uncomfortable feelings that we feel whenever we know we are doing something wrong but love it too much to stop I can relate to this daily battle because I struggle just like everyone else Our old human nature is opposed to virtuous living and is always willing to fight for its independence

As we saw with the puppy’s development, we notice similar reactions with those who live close to railroad tracks or airports but they eventually get used to the sounds We have several clocks in our home that are bonging and gonging all the time and when people come in, they say wow listen to all those chimes while we do not even notice them. It’s one thing to get used to sights and sounds that do not hinder our spiritual life, but it’s dangerous to let our guard down when it comes to accepting things that are contrary to God’s standard of sanctification I am reminded of the old Dick Van Dyke show where even though Rob and Laura were married, there were two separate beds in the bedroom Back then even the idea of a married couple in the same bed was socially and morally taboo and that was only fifty years ago What happened to our modesty? As television and movies are pushing the limits of morality, so are the temptations to dwell on thoughts that are corrupt and ungodly If we are not careful, we will become numb to perversion, darkness, and wickedness like the frog who sits in the pan of water on the stove and hardly notices he is being boiled. If we absorb and accept small amounts of impurities here and there, before long we will not be offended or insulted at all, in fact we might begin to enjoy it “Having therefore these promises dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” II Corinthians 7:1

Recently the daughter of a dear departed friend of mine who was a member of the Denton Button Club brought her button collection to me to sell My friend loved handmade Czech and rhinestone buttons, buttons all in one color, mother-ofpearls, black glass with silver and gold embellishment, realistics, bakelite, and celluloid Like me she was not discriminating in her choices, she just liked all buttons.

The button in the photograph is a beautiful example of a “Gay Nineties” jewel button They are typically rather ornate, large buttons with glass settings that were closures for coats or cloaks

The hey-day of Gay Nineties jewels was from 1890-1910, although some were made as late as the 1920s Their distinguishing feature is a single prominent stone with an ornately decorative border Borders were made of silver plated

The National Button Society now has more than 3,000 members on four continents, with 39 of the 50 states represented by state and local button clubs The National Button Society annual convention will be held August 19-25, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida

Sadly the Denton Button Club disbanded many years ago when many of the members became to old to attend meetings I remain friends with many of the club members to this day And I still love to look at and study about the manufacture and beauty of these little jewels

Bulldogs 4 Bulldogs announce "Silver Spike Tailgate Party"

The Bulldogs 4 Bulldogs PAC has announced that they will host a tailgate party prior to the 55th Battle of the Silver Spike on Oct 20

The group will have free hamburgers and hot dogs and more Their intention is to gain support for the upcoming crucial bond election for the Howe ISD which is facing overcrowding issues at the elementary school. The Howe ISD Board of Trustees voted in favor of moving forward with a plan that would construct a new $17 million, four-grade-level campus that would allow for prekindergarten, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade to be housed in the new building on a tract of land yet to be determined

The campus would allow for more room at the existing elementary and middle school campuses which are currently sharing one cafeteria forcing students to rotate lunch times from 10 am - 2 pm

Howe ISD says that enrollment is growing at nine percent per year

The bond is estimated to cost $14.31 per month on a $100,000 home, $23 85 per month on a $150,000 home, $33 40 per month on a $200,000 home, and $42 94 per month on a $250,000 home

Early voting starts Oct 23 through Nov 3 at the Howe Community Center The actual election day is Nov 7 at the same location
