Faith

been given Jesus said, “then one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him, and saying, teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind This is the first and great commandment And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself ” So what is love? According to Jesus, our first love is upward, toward God Our love for God is not a partial love, but total love In other words, we should love God with everything we have in us to go away, slamming the door in his face He went to the next house and got the same response, and the next one, and the next one, and the next one, and doors kept closing in his face Finally, he came to the house of one woman who professed to be a Christian When she opened the door, she started to say the same thing until that young boy said, “don’t you recognize me?

Since Valentine’s day has just past, I thought I would write this article about love Love is probably an underused word as well as a misused word We use the word love in many ways We can love chocolate cake, we can love our new car, we can love our new haircut, we can love our job, we can love our friends and we can love our family Wow, that’s a lot of uses of the word love

Yet, what is love? Let’s do a little investigating on the word love. First of all, love is not just feelings Somebody has described teenage love as a feeling you feel when you feel that what you feel is a feeling you have never felt before. I’m not sure I understand that statement, but love is not just a feeling, Second, love is not a matter of the mind Years ago the Partridge family recorded a song entitled: “I think I love you ” Well, if you only think you love me, you probably don’t love me

If love is not a matter of feelings and thought, then what is love? Love is a matter of the will Here’s a definition I found on love: love is a commandment that is followed by a commitment The great evangelist Billy Graham said, “love is the loveliest flower in the garden of God’s grace ”

Jesus told us all that we need to know about love in Matthew chapter 22 verses 35-40 A lawyer came up to him and asked him one of the greatest questions he was ever asked Jesus, then gave him the greatest answer that could have ever

Then Jesus said our love should be outward, toward others John may have had the words of Christ in mind when he wrote in 1 John 4:7 “Beloved, let us love one another” Jesus also said that our love is to be inward, toward ourselves When Jesus told us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, He wasn’t promoting a selfish type of love Loving yourself is realizing your value to God Now God doesn’t love you because you are valuable You are valuable because God love you. The familiar verse in the third chapter of John’s gospel tells us of our value to God Allow me to personalize this for you “For God so loved you, that he gave his only son, that if you would believe in him, you would not perish, but you would have everlasting life ” (John 3:16) We are so loved and valued by God that He allowed His on Son to die for our sins!

There is a story of a ten-year-old Jewish boy in Germany during world war II He and his parents lived in a Polish village before they were rounded up and sentenced to death by machine gun fire They stood beside each other waiting for death, but somehow the bullets that killed the parents missed the boy He fell with his father and mother and other Jews into a ditch where soldiers covered their bodies with dirt Somehow oxygen reached the boy and he was able to breathe until nightfall Then he clawed his way out of that tomb In the darkness, that boy made his way to the nearest house, that of a woman, and begged for help But the woman recognized him as one of the Jews marked for death by those Nazis, and she screamed at him and ordered him

I’m the Jesus that you say you love ” Well, after a silent pause, the woman in the doorway swept that lad into her arms and kissed him From that day on, he became a part of her family

I think that story is a great example of what Jesus said in the earlier verses When you love God, you will love others as yourself continued from page 2 end " said Lands "We are not going to quit. We may not be having a good day but we won't quit "

Streetman again led Howe with 19 points and was followed by Fulenchek and Hargrove's five points each Other scorers were Rhoten (4), Vick (4), Honore (3), Griffin (2), Sanders (1), and Harvey (1)

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting However, each chartered organization can use either of two other options to celebrate this special day

An organization can adopt a specific Sunday to celebrate. In the instance of the United Methodist Church, Scout Sunday is celebrated on the second Sunday in February It also is permissible for a local church to celebrate on the Sunday most acceptable to the pastor and congregation
