word meaning to bite Bitterness is like being bitten by a snake who releases his poison into our bodies, except bitterness is a poison that goes to our heart Bitterness is that feeling of hurt, resentment, anger, hate, and even revenge, that often build up in our heart when we have been bitten by certain experiences of life There are many experiences of life that can leave us bitter For example, you might be bitter towards: a boss that fired you, a spouse that walked out on you, a friend that broke your trust, a parent you mistreated you or even a church that let you down of the “root of bitterness ” If bitterness has a “root” then we need to get rid of that root!

Ephesians 4:31 says to put away all bitterness, meaning to get rid of it Bitterness needs to be put in the trash!

The story has been told of how after the Civil War, General Robert E Lee visited a lady that took him to the remains of a grand old tree in front of her house She cried as she pointed out the limbs that had been destroyed by Union artillery fire and the trunk that had been mutilated by the Union army She looked at Lee and asked him what should she do about it? After a moment of silence, Lee said, “Cut it down, my dear Madam, and forget it ”

Sounds like pretty good advice to me Whatever it is that leaves us full of bitterness, throw it away Cut it down and forget it Forget about the hurt and then forgive those that hurt us We are to forgive the way that God forgives us How has God forgiven us? Completely and eternally!
I read recently about an elderly woman driving a big, new, expensive car It seems that she was preparing to back into a parking space when suddenly a young man in a small sports car zoomed into the space ahead of her The lady, angrily, asked why he had done that when he could tell that she was trying to park there His response was, “I’m young and I’m quick ” When he came back a few minutes later, he found the elderly lady using her big, new, expensive car as a battering ram backing up and then ramming into his car He ran up to her and angrily asked her why she was wrecking his car Her response was, “Because I’m old and I’m rich ”
Just a funny story to remind us that sometimes things happen in our life that angers us so much that we respond in hurtful or harmful ways Bitterness is one of those harmful things The Bible talks about bitterness in Hebrews 12:15, “See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ‘root of bitterness’ springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled ”
Our word “bitterness” comes from a
I’ve even known people who were bitter towards God I think of a woman that survived the sinking of the Titanic, but her husband did not Looking back, the woman said, “God went down with the Titanic ”
The verse in Hebrews speaks of the “root of bitterness.” A root has to be planted I’ve mention several things that can happen to “plant” bitterness in our heart But for a root to grow it has to be cultivated There must be soil for it to grow in, and water and the sun to sustain it.
According to the passage we are not to allow the “root of bitterness” to spring up That means we should not allow bitterness to grow and develop in our life We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control what happens in us You cannot control how others to act toward you, but you can control how you react to them What happens is that we provide the soil, water, and sun for bitterness to grow in our life
So what do we do? Well, go back to the verse in Hebrews It speaks
