The Howe High School Marching Band failed to make the finals this weekend It was not due to a bad performance as one spectator said that "Howe knocked it out of the park " Making the trip were 32 bands to Princeton's "Sounds of Fall" in which more than half of the competition came from schools much larger with 4A, and even a 5A and 6A programs

messed up so many times yet is remembered as "a man after God's own heart," 1 Samuel 13:14 His story is a reminder that despite our sins we can find favor in God's sight, through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Romans 8:1

David grew up the youngest son in a large family and looked after the sheep and ran errands to his older brothers. He gained a level of faith in God which few men had David defeated Goliath using a sling and a stone solely because of his faith in God Shortly afterwards he moved into the palace with Saul and lived a life of a warrior for the next 7 years His abilities and bravery earned him great popularity and King Saul became jealous and obsessed with wanting him dead For the next 13 years David ran and hid from Saul but refused to raise a sword against him David had a listening heart towards the Lord during those years of persecution and when he learned that King Saul had committed suicide he waited for the Lord to guide him God lead David to the town Judah where he was content to serve God with a small army Eventually David returned to Jerusalem and became King of Israel David wanted to build God a temple to show gratitude and love The reply from God was that David's son, Solomon, would build the temple and that God wanted to build David’s house (2 Sam. 7:4-13). A detailed promise was given to David by the prophet Nathan Read 2 Samuel 7 to learn more Jesus is in the lineage of David and the remainder of the promise will be fulfilled through Him King David

Everything began to flourish when David became King but he lost the contentment he had in battle; his strength was also his weakness David added 5 more wives while he was king I’ve wondered if this is where Satan knew he could get David’s attention to turn to Bathsheba If David had given his whole heart to his first love he would not been tempted that day on the balcony “And David sent someone to find out about her The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite,” 2 Samuel 11:3 God warned him that this woman was not his to take Bathsheba’s husband was a loyal servant in David’s army and even followed him to the wilderness when he ran from Saul David ignored what was right and chose what was wrong At that decision making moment he didn’t care what God had called him to do, he wanted Bathsheba David’s home fostered rebellion from that day forward "Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun '" Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD " And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die,” 2 Samuel 12:11-14 David was the greatest king that Israel had ever had but he failed as a husband and a father All of his trouble that followed was a direct result of his rebellious and undisciplined influence to his sons David had a calling on his life and he knew it He was an amazing warrior king in battles but he failed to battle his own war He lost the description of his true calling when he stayed home and sent his General into battle instead When we aren’t active in our gifts and talents we become distracted, restless and a target for the devil’s lies If David had been the warrior king he was anointed and called to be he would not have been home hanging out on the roof watching another man’s wife Instead he would have been leading the way with passion against the enemies of the Lord David wasn’t looking for sin but sin found him not active in his calling Sometimes what we think will bring us happiness brings our greatest heartaches David had killed tens of thousands of enemies He persevered under great difficulties. He slept years in caves in the wilderness waiting on the Lord He kept his eyes on the calling of God no matter how long it took. In his battles he relied on the truth of God but when life was easy he took a back seat and that’s when Satan showed up “Be alert and of sober mind Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour,” 1 Peter 5:8

David separated himself from the army he was called to lead He isolated himself and gave way to his enemy the devil We are at that same risk and we all sin Adam had no worries in the Garden; beautiful wife, talked to God in the cool of each day, everything was given to him without worries; yet he sinned

If Adam could be distracted by sin then so can I! If David could be that weak when he was that strong, then so I can We are capable of the most blatant sin if we are given the right isolation and presented with the right temptation Don’t isolate yourself from other believers. Don’t entertain sinful thoughts We have to plan ahead to turn and run from our temptation! “But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death,” James 1:14-15 David could have confessed his sin immediately but instead he weaved a web of cover up Manipulation NEVER works out Bathsheba got pregnant David then had her husband, his loyal servant, killed on the battle field His cover up made no sense and what he thought would make him happy was now a monster that would not be tamed All of this came from a warrior king who showed himself excellent in battle When we panic we open ourselves up to crazy logic and thinking! Telling the truth when we sin is hard to do because of the fear of punishment or loss of respect We use terms like “I made a mistake”, “I didn’t know”, “It was a bad choice”, “I was wrong” but we avoid the word sin Confessing, “I sinned” is where the walls of lies come down Fear blames others, makes excuses and matters get worse When you lie you put yourself in Satan’s territory You may have gotten what you wanted but now it feels like a bed of copperheads Your life is not over and you have not ruined God’s plan for you It’s never been about us getting it right It’s about Christ Who makes us right God is not disappointed in you He already knew where you’d mess up and it didn’t shock Him Jesus took all your sins, your regrets, your shame and your heartaches and paid the price of death on the cross for you His grace is unmerited but freely provided God is opposite of our logic When we go after what makes us happy we become miserable God loves you exactly where you are His joy is more than happiness and different than the happiness we can supply for ourselves You can know real joy in the midst of real tragedy just by saying yes to Jesus

"The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart," 1 Samuel 16:7 If you don’t have a Bible please contact me at sfadebbie@yahoo com and I will provide you one

“Halloween” dates back to the Celts, a tribal people who lived two millennia ago chiefly in Britain and parts of Europe On the night of October 31, Samhain, a harvest festival celebrated the official end of summer Celtic households extinguished their hearths to deliberately make their houses cold and undesirable to disembodied spirits Some Celtic families dressed in weird costumes as demons, hobgoblins and other malevolent creatures, and masks to disguise themselves from the evilminded spirits or paraded in costumes through villages to lure the spirits away

Later on, invading Roman armies brought their own harvest festival dedicated to Pomona, a goddess of fertility and orchard crops such as apples and nuts Pomona’s festival was held nearly the same time as Samhain, thus the two celebrations were melded together Harvest fest during the Victorian era was not only about spirits but also about romance Girls and young women employed a number of divination spells to try to identify their future husbands and predict the course of their marriage

Did you ever wonder why we bob for apples at Halloween parties?

The winner of this game was thought to be the first who would marry

When Christianity swept over Britain and Europe, many pagan celebrations were turned into Christian observances Pope Boniface IV created All Saints Day in May of 610 AD to remember early Christian martyrs Pope Gregory III moved the commemoration to November 1 in 835 AD All Saints Day was also known as All Hallows and the day before as Hallows Eve or Even Over time, October 31 came to be called Halloween

When England began founding colonies in America, colonists brought their holiday customs with them Puritan New England banned Halloween whereas the middle colonies, such as New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, preserved Halloween traditions

The custom of hollowing out and carving turnips with demon faces and lighting a candle within is a Celt tradition Immigrants to America found few turnips but plentiful pumpkins in their new land The “Jack o’lantern” takes its name from an Irish folktale of a sinner named Jack who was condemned by the Devil to carry a coal in a hollowed out turnip until Judgment Day

One of the most sought after Halloween collectibles are pulp/papier mache jack-o-lanterns There are clues that you want to look for to determine if your jack is American or German American jacks are larger, made of “eggcarton” material, with cutouts for eyes and mouth with paper inserts, and the bottom and body are one piece The German jacks from 1900-1930s are generally smaller, made of composition or cardboard, with cutouts for eyes, nose and mouth with inserts, and have attached cardboard bottoms Jacko-lanterns are valued by size and condition The following are for perfect containers with perfect inserts American: 4” $95, 5” $145, 6” $185, 7” $225; German compo 4” $275, 5” $350, molded 3” $110-6” $275 One book listed an exquisite German 1908-1912 papier-mache pumpkin lantern with compo wash, perfect original paper inserts 4 5” at $5,000!
