Recycling is a great way to help the environment – and reusing things is great, too When you send bottles, paper, and plastic away to the recycling plant, it takes energy to turn them into new products When you reuse something, you’re keeping it out of the trash system altogether

How long does it take garbage to break down in the environment?

Newspaper: 6 weeks

Apple core: 2 months

Plastic bag: 10 – 20 years

Aluminum can: 80 – 200 years for different types of recycling, and help family members use them Is there anything in your recycling you could reuse, such as old jars or plastic bags?

Collect 20 leftover plastic bags and take them back to a store that recycles them Recycled plastic bags can be used to make plastic lumber for decks or swing sets and polar fleece for vests and coats

Set up a place at school where other kids can bring in plastic bags With a parent, take what you collect for a month to a store for recycling

Donate toys and clothes to Peggy's Porch With your family, go

Each Monday, city workers arrive to the same type of scenario on the grounds of the recycling containers Due to a few citizens who have ruined the recycling experience for the town by tossing in their trash instead of recyclables, the city has had to manipulate the hours of the containers in order to prevent such misuse However, due to the closed hours, some feel the need to just leave their trash or recycling on the grounds for someone else to pick up

Also, the reconstruction of the former First Christian Church requires a container outside of the building However, it seems that some citizens are confused and think that it is a public trash container The volunteer organization that raised $25,000 for the renovation effort is currently paying for the trash container, therefore, those placing their trash in this container are stealing from the great community phone number is 903-532-5571 Those caught dumping illegally could face hefty fines

We can do better than this When you think of your city as you do your home, these things will cease to happen If any of this disturbs you and you would like to become a member of Keep Howe Beautiful, please contact Donna Wormsbaker at djwormsbaker@verizon net as she is the Executive Director of the program Membership dues are $10 per year for individuals and they have clean-up days and flower planting days They are NOT, however, responsible for picking up your trash

Please take pride in your community and take the time to make Howe the best place to live

In addition, if you find someone littering or misusing the trash services, please don't hesitate to send photos to news@howeenterprise com It has been suggested that the Howe Enterprise start a "public shaming" column in order to alleviate these issues

Wilson to start seeking grants for Howe

The City of Howe's Economic Development department has been successful in seeking a grant writer for various projects in Howe.

Terri Wilson, who has been writing successfull grants for Collinsville, Celina and Krum has agreed to start working on projects for Howe

Howe's Rumor Mill

The bigger the tale, the more people will believe it That is typical life in small town America Howe is no different than Hico or Hondo when it comes to the rumor mill Some of the rumors around town include one that the old Dairy Queen building had a deal with a restaurant, but it fell through and now the building will just sit empty. In fact, the truth is that there will be a restaurant in the building and it will be front page news in the coming weeks

One of the biggest rumors now was set by this very own establishment The elaborate April Fools joke on Facebook has the Howe Enterprise purchasing the radio tower in Howe and starting a new FM station called K-HOW Plenty of people took the bait Don't feel bad

Terri Wilson

Wilson spent eight years as the mayor of Krum as well as experience on the city council While the mayor, she brought hundreds of thousands of dollars to the City of Krum at no or very little cost to taxpayers Her knowledge of grant writing is invaluable

Wilson will work on a commission basis by making a small portion of each successful grant.

Also, word in the coffee shop is that all of the clearing of land by Howe High School is making way for a new housing development This also is not true The Howe Enterprise was told by two sources associated with the clearing that the property is just being cleared and that there is no intentions to sell the land

Rumor has it that Howe is looking in to putting a bridge across US Highway 75 from L B Kirby Avenue to Hall Cemetery Road This one is true as the drawings have already been approved by TxDOT several years ago. They were resubmitted last fall If the projects is selected, it likely would start no sooner than 2018 One day it will happen And also something that is inevitable is the city once again having its own sewer system
