Marriage is teamwork and on each team everyone has an important role
When Robin and I first got married we came to an agreement on how things would work on our “team ” I would handle the grocery shopping if she would cook. I would put gas in the car as long as she told me that the car needed gas. I would mow, edge and take care of the outside of the house, and she would put her decorating skills to work inside our house
When our children came along we renegotiated the contract In exchange for her handling anything dealing with blood, I agreed to take care of all cooking AND took charge of incidents involving vomit and “number two ” I handled the majority of the diaper changing and promised not to get involved with the feeding process
I thought we had covered all of the bases on responsibilities in our marriage. I was wrong. This was confirmed loudly and clearly at approximately 2:30a.m. this past Tuesday morning. Robin was on a mission to the bathroom, but her trip was cut short because as she flipped on the light something out of the corner of her eye caught her attention She peered into the bathtub and emitted a shriek that woke up the southern portion of Grayson County and caused a power outage in northern Collin County.
Light sleeper that I am I was left extracting my head from the sheetrock above our bed
She bounced back into the bedroom and announced, “There is a HUGE rat in the bathtub!” As she issued
It is at this point that I must confess that I am not the manliest of men I fall short in many areas of machismo – I can’t fix anything, I know next to nothing about cars, I don’t hunt, and I really don’t enjoy taking a fish off a hook. Most of all – I hate rodents! One discussion we never had was who bore the responsibility of ridding varmints from our home As I laid in bed pondering this a variety of thoughts ran through my brain:
“I wonder if Elijah (our oldest) would be interested in taking this on?”
“Maybe it’ll slip back down the drain and go away?”
“Where is that ‘For Sale’ sign?”
I was roused from my thinking by a flying pillow notifying my immediate attention was required. So I hopped up to assess the situation with a machete in one hand and a Louisville Slugger in the other I cautiously approached the tub, only to find that the behemoth my wife saw was merely a tiny field mouse
But still a daunting opponent. After much thought I grabbed a plastic cup and a piece of cardboard I slammed the cup over my panicked foe then quickly slid the cardboard underneath the cup Unfortunately that was as far as I had thought through my plan – NOW WHAT?!?!?!
I called for Robin – who was now sitting on the neighbor’s roof – and told her to open the front door. I quickly ran out the door and into our front yard
What happened next is not for the faint of heart and since I know that PETA carefully monitors this fine periodical, let’s just say that the mouse and I got in touch with some old time religion…and we “had a little talk with Jesus.”
This is taking place on the same weekend of the All-School
