n Saturday, June 4, Houston audiences were blown away by 25-year-old violinist Luke Hsu, who won first prize in the 41st annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition (The Grace Woodson Memorial Award) with his performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Luke also took home the Hermann Shoss Audience Choice Award and the Robert and Nancy Peiser Award for Artistic Encouragement. The Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition—a partnership between the Houston Symphony Leagues and the Houston Symphony— is one of the foremost instrumental competitions in the world and was named to honor the memory of Miss Ima Hogg, a co-founder of the Houston Symphony. This prestigious competition identifies outstanding young instrumentalists and supports their pursuit of careers in music-making. This year’s competition, chaired by Jo Dee Wright, featured three other finalists along with Luke: cellist Christine J. Lee, percussionist Samuel Chan and pianist Brian Lin.
