MUSICIAN SPONSORSHIP diately. “The musician sponsor relationship deepens my experience with the Houston Symphony. When attending concerts, I particularly listen for Mark’s playing with a keen ear!” tells Steven. Mark finds the relationship equally as fulfilling. “Just as our audience often desires a personal connection with the musicians, we also desire to have that connection with our patrons,” says Mark. “I love hearing Margaret’s reflections after a concert—what she liked, what she didn’t like, what she thought of the conductor, her impressions of the soloist —everything. We rarely get to listen to a concert from the seats of Jones Hall, so it’s always a treat to get an impression from the audience.” Both Steven and Margaret concur, “The musicians of the Houston Symphony are incredibly talented, and we have immense respect for them and consider them celebrities in Houston. Getting to know them personally is enriching and enjoyable; we absolutely recommend that others become musician sponsors.” photo by eric arbiter

Margaret Waisman has served on the Board of the Houston Symphony since 1977, having chaired both the Finance Committee and Musical Affairs Committee, as well as serving on the Development Committee and several subcommittees. “When I moved to Houston, I knew I wanted to be on the Board of the Houston Symphony, to do everything in my power to make it flourish,” says Margaret. Margaret’s husband, Steven Callahan, has enjoyed an evolving role as a supporter and musician sponsor over the years. “Through Margaret’s dedication to the Houston Symphony, I have become aware of how a successful orchestra requires great musicians, great staff, great supporters, and great benefactors—all working ‘in concert’!” With both having cherished musical backgrounds, becoming musician sponsors was a natural fit for Margaret and Steven. The couple first met percussionist Mark Griffith in the Green Room shortly after he joined the Houston Symphony in 2004. They hit it off imme-
