For the past 15 years, owners Al and Susie have been on hand every day, working hard to ensure that their customers receive quality, fresh and affordable Italian food, with excellent service in a comfortable atmosphere.

Pizza, Pasta & Vino

“Our motto is love at first bite,” Al explains. “I think people come here because they know they’re going to have a great meal every time. It’s a place where you can come for a date or with your family, and enjoy great food.” Maria Rios, a regular at the restaurant, says that there’s no place in Humble like Italiano’s. “It’s warm and friendly. I love the bread. The salads are amazing, and I always order the chicken fettuccine alfredo. When my family comes to visit me from Latin America, this is the first place that I take them.” For lunch, favorite dishes like homemade lasagna and chicken marsala are generously portioned yet still ring

There are nightly dinner specials like the signature osso buco, a slow-braised veal shank cooked for hours in a special blend of spices and herbs until tender. Salmon and steak specials are also regularly available, but there are plenty of classic Italian choices to please any member of the family. Lobster ravioli, shrimp scampi, veal scalloppini, linguini pescatore and chicken penne ala vodka are just some of the many savory dishes available at dinner. Italiano’s also offers a business catering program, as well as a large banquet hall for parties of up to 150. Visit Italiano’s to see why they get four- and five-star reviews. It’s not just the food, it’s the love that Al and Susie put into it. Now, that’s amore!

closed out the summer with a bang. The Heights seems be the next restaurant boomtown. September was met with the opening of KA Sushi, a trendy sushi and ramen spot that’s a much welcome addition to the neighborhood. In October, Treadsack restaurant group’s Hunky Dory Tavern began pumping out British-style fare created by Richard Knight, former chef of the beloved Feast. Hit it for hearth-fired côte de bœuf with bone marrow, and cake stand pork chop served with both mashed potatoes and fries. The group also went on to open the highly anticipated Thai eatery Foreign Correspondents in October and the Gulf Coast concept Bernadine’s at year’s end, both of which have exceeded their high expectations.

Over in River Oaks, Ford Fry’s State of Grace has been satisfying Houstonians with globally and locally inspired comfort eats, including dishes like twice-fried Korean chicken and whole roasted flounder with salsa verde.

H

Last year was a time of expansion, from tried-and-true restaurant groups introducing bright and fresh concepts to brand spanking new eateries and a few worthy imports. And with the way 2016 has been coming along, it looks as if our dining landscape is about to get that much more impressive. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting new kids on the block: Last year started off strong with some newcomers that have since become local favorites. Midtown’s Oporto Fooding House & Wine, the sister restaurant of Greenway’s Oporto Wine Cafe, is one of them. The eatery has been stunning with Portuguese tapas kissed with Indian and Italian influences. Feast on gorgeously charred octopus, housemade linguiça sausage and spicy goan seafood curry. Other big openings included the part-bake shop, part-bar, partrestaurant and part-awesome Weights + Measures in Midtown (do yourself a favor and get the carrot pizza) and Big Eyed Fish, the brunch-tastic Southern comfort concept on Washington.

MOM 2016 OVERLAY02.indd 11

In May, B&B Butchers brought a New York-style steak game to Houston, and we’re better for it. At this charming butchery and steakhouse, meat is king. Get it in the form of the sinfully delicious thick-cut bacon appetizer, and wagyu from Gearhart Ranch, Kobe from Japan, and USDA Prime, all dry-aged and hand-cut daily inhouse. Of course, there are plenty of less meaty options as well, including the thoughtfully curated list of wines with which to wash it all down. Next, things got a little sweeter with Fluff Bake Bar opening up shop in Midtown, and we secured another pizza spot in Bollo Wood-Fired Pizza, where you’ll find more than just authentically prepared pies cooked from a VPN-certified wood-fired oven. Guests can also feast on local marinated beets, lobster ravioli with truffle butter, and double-cut pork chop marsala.

The year closed out with yet another restaurant-group opening, this time from Agricole Hospitality (of Revival Market and Coltivare fame). The whiskey bar and on-site taco truck concept Eight Row Flint has been keeping locals perfectly satiated. As luck would have it, 2016 has shown absolutely zero signs of slowing down. We’ve already seen the openings of street meat purveyors The Halal Guys, La Table (a remake of TABLE on Post Oak) and Cantonese eatery Ginger & Fork. We’re also looking forward to those in the works, including Conservatory, an underground beer garden and food hall that will open in the coming months in downtown; and a new outpost of NYC’s famous Shake Shack. Bring it on!

Over in Sharpstown, the owners of Tiger Den branched out with another hot concept: Mein Restaurant. The brighter restaurant focuses on Chinese fare and seriously good noodles made from scratch. Fruit and flower salad Summer was just as hot. Celebrated chef Randy Rucker’s Bramble amused with quality rustic ingredients in simple preparations like roast chicken and whole Gulf fish. In July, a star was born in Helen Greek Food & Wine. In just a short time, the restaurant has already gained national attention, earning a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant. That’s thanks to innovative takes on traditional Mediterranean fare — the gyro is made using beyond-tender marinated pork shoulder instead of the usual shaved mystery meat — and the second-largest Greek wine list in the country. SaltAir Seafood Kitchen’s remarkable fresh-from-the-sea plates, Izakaya’s inspired Japanese tapas and Heights eatery Southern Goods’ modern comfort food

Peska Seafood Culture

April 2016

By spring, Hugs & Donuts opened next door to Fat Cat Creamery after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Every bite of the shop’s freshly baked gourmet goodness feels like one big giant hug. Just as lovable? The second (in the Loop) location of Pizaro’s, which opened its doors to eager diners in Montrose. This time around, there’s a bigger dining room and an extra-colossal woodfired oven for slinging out hot and bubbling pizzas. Spring would

The fun continued with PESKA Seafood Culture opening in April. Young gun chef Omar Pereney may only be in his twenties, but he shows maturity through skillfully balanced ceviches and impeccable mains.

In November, Montrose got a new burger joint, aptly named The Burger Joint, in the old Little Bigs space. A joint venture between Shawn Bermudez of Royal Oak and food-truck guru Matthew Pak, the beefed-up spot keeps things fresh with local ingredients and handspun milkshakes. Just down the street, another food truck turned brick-and-mortar, Vietnamese hotspot Les Ba’Get, opened up shop.

Houston Press

In early March, North Italia opened its doors in the now-bustling BLVD Place. The restaurant offers locally influenced, modern Italian fare in the form of quality scratchmade pizzas, pastas, salads, and meat and seafood entrées. Go for dishes like the fig and prosciutto pizza, which sings with a light and airy crust and creamy goat cheese; and pillowy housemade ricotta gnocchi, rich and decadent with braised short rib — all of which you can take down alongside a well-appointed by-the-glass and bottle wine program. Later in March, Midtown got a taste of ramen realness with the opening of JINYA Ramen. Nothing feeds the mind, body and soul like slurping up noodles from JINYA’s perfectly porky, milky-white tonkotsu broth. Nothing.

also see a second ITL location of the much-beloved Mala Sichuan, and its intense Szechuan-style flavors have been scorching tongues via red oil dumplings and green peppercorn beef ever since.

But it wasn’t just Treadsack that was expanding. F.E.E.D. TX brought us Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts in October. The fastcasual eatery tweaked its chicken recipe after initial disappointing reviews, but we are happy to report the revamped edition of fried bird is quite excellent. It’s best enjoyed alongside yeasty Mexican chocolate donuts. F. E.E.D. also opened Little Liberty, the younger sister of Liberty Kitchen, in Rice Village earlier this year.

ouston’s culinary scene has been rising for years now, and with some recent James Beard semifinalist nods and media attention, it’s fair to say the nation has started to take notice. But we’re not a city to rest on our laurels. That’s why new and exciting restaurants seem to be popping up by the minute.

ometimes (as much as we hate to admit it), good things come from our neighbors to the north. As is the case with Fort Worth import Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, whose fast and fresh baja-style street eats and tasty drinks have gained a cult following in the Bayou City. The first shop was bought by a father and son duo in 2003, and after revamping the original store and perfecting their recipes, the craze has now spread to 85 stores throughout 11 states. With the opening of the latest location in the old Hefley’s space on West Gray, a total of 4 of those shops are in Houston. Every location – including the local joints in Midtown, Missouri City, Spring, and Vintage Park – makes sure to keep the Fuzzy’s focus razor sharp. And that’s to provide prompt, friendly, and efficient service, dish out unique, daily-made Mexican street eats in Texas-sized portions, and to do it all at fair prices in a fun, kitschy atmosphere that will have you coming back time and time again. But the real secret is in their crave-worthy combination of house sauce and feta. The addictive garlicky concoction gets drizzled over tacos and burritos stuffed with things like grilled and tempura-battered fish and shrimp, spicy shredded pork, meltingly tender brisket, and even zucchini, squash and carrots. When combined with crumbly, salty feta cheese, the bite, zip and tang you experience will knock your socks off. It’s easy to see why the combo has won over stomachs around the country, but the rest of the made-from-scratch menu has helped, too.

Before digging into the main event, start with mouthwatering teasers like shredded chicken nachos or freshly fried tortilla chips with chorizo queso, chunky housemade guacamole, and inhouse roasted salsa. Even kids can get in on the action with playful cheeseburger quesadillas and crispy chicken sticks with a ranch or queso dipper. Whether you’re feeling like a grilled shrimp salad or sizzling beef fajitas, there’s definitely something to make everybody happy.

April 2016

Fresh, Fast and Fun, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is sure to be your new addiction.

Houston Press

This even holds true for their breakfast menu, which allows you to stuff yourself with chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and overloaded bacon, egg and cheese burritos that are bigger than your face all day long. All of the food is fast-casual counter-service, meaning the dining experience won’t hurt your schedule (order and you’ll have your fresh eats 6-7 minutes later) or your wallet. Which is good, since you’ll also want to tack on a few ice cold beverages. Margaritas and frozen Fuzzy Drivers – amazingly good orange creamsicle-like concoctions spiked with vanilla vodka – keep guests extra refreshed.

Challenge. While you wine and dine on traditional Italian plates like lobster ravioli and veal scaloppini, the eatery offers fun questions for you to ask and answer with your sweetheart. ouston and dating go together like spaghetti and meatballs. Milk and cookies. Chips and queso. Notice a theme here? Everything’s better when food is involved. So it’s a good thing Houston has no shortage of eateries to make the heart swell. From casual lunch spots perfect for the first date to fancy affairs where you can wine and dine, here’s where to get your date on in Houston:

The First-Date Sweet Spot First dates can be tough. You don’t want to be stuck at a two-hour dinner if things go sour, but you want to make a good enough impression to prove your gastronomic prowess. From coffee shops to hip gastropubs, these fun and funky eateries definitely hit that first-date sweet spot.

A relaxed meal at Ruggles Green will put anyone at ease, especially when you end the experience by splitting one of Ruggles’s decadent desserts. May we suggest the incredibly craveable white chocolate bread pudding? It’s sure to score you a second date.

Beer nerds can geek out together at Karbach Brewery. It’s guaranteed to be an especially good time now that Karbach has added a full-service restaurant, where you’ll find everything from Korean fried chicken bites to malted ricotta gnocchi. And for a totally chill, country-style date, hit up Redneck

MOM 2016 OVERLAY02.indd 19

Date Nights That Are Way Better Than Netflix After a long, hard week, it’s all too tempting to pop on the Netflix, put on some pajamas and order a pizza with your partner-in-crime. Thankfully, these awesomely fun and deliciously good dinner-and-drinks spots are here to convince you that it is totally worth it to leave your couch:

Want to pull out all the stops? Pappas Bros. Steakhouse (now with a new location downtown) never fails to deliver a night out that is all class. The restaurant takes care of you just as well as it does its in-house butchered, dry-aged steaks (which get the royal treatment for 28-plus days). Don’t miss the whiskey cart and stellar wine program, either.

With garden-fresh eats and classic cocktails to match, the dimly lit Coltivare Pizza & Garden is one hot ticket. There’s a strict no-reservation policy, but that just lets you ease into the night with a few of those expertly crafted cocktails at the bar. Once seated, pick from housemade pastas, inspired small bites and plates, and wood-fired pies.

Or if you prefer to travel the world without stepping on a plane, treat yourselves to a Spanish fine-dining experience at BCN Taste & Tradition. Housed in a sophisticated, Mediterranean-style mansion just off Montrose, the restaurant wows with mouthwatering plates of shrimp gnudi, suckling pig, smoky eggplant and blackened fillet.

Zelko Bistro boasts an equally appealing atmosphere in which to snuggle up with an excellent meal. Get elevated comfort-style plates like Cap’n Crunch-crusted fried chicken and plump, meaty blue-crab cakes. Vanilla tres leches makes for the perfect ending to a sweet night.

With such awe-inspiring dining experiences, falling in love in (and with) Houston sure is easy.

Looking for a “beautiful” dining experience? Look no further than upscale Italian eatery Mia Bella Trattoria. With high, oldworld ceilings, stunning art and handsome bars, each of the three locations makes for simple, leisurely dates. Sip and savor as you indulge in charred octopus, decadent lamb shank osso buco, and classics like eggplant parmigiana and spaghetti and meatballs. Tapas are a great way to enjoy a deliciously sultry night, especially at Andalucia Tapas Restaurant, where live flamenco dancing adds a sexy punch every Friday and Saturday night. Nosh on crab cakes with sofrito citrus butter, chicken croquetas and seriously loaded seafood paella. Date night goes interactive at Humble’s Italiano’s, where the restaurant spices up the conversation with The Ultimate Date Night

Chinese food can be both wallet-friendly and telling, because it’s always nice to know if your takeout orders are compatible right off the bat. Test your date over dumplings and moo shu pork at Auntie Chang’s. The same can be said for your pizza order. Try the extensive menu of pies, Italian- and Greek-inspired sandwiches, and classic pastas at Pepperoni’s to see if you’re a match made in pizza heaven.

Country Club, where you’ll find awesome burgers and Southern comfort foods like pimiento cheese, along with live music and a nice roster of craft brews and moonshine.

And with an intimate, 25-seat Chef’s Table, Cureight by Hubbell & Hudson provides a truly extraordinary dining experience. Chef Austin Simmons uses the culinary playground to imagine up an impressive eight-course menu that has been winning hearts over week after week.

HOUSTON PRESS

Tout Suite combines an unfussy coffeehouse setting with great eats, excellent brews and housemade desserts perfect for sharing (depending on how the date is going, of course). Get to know each other over cortados and Cubans, red wine and chocolate cupcakes, or all the above. The Honeymoon Cafe & Bar provides a similar relaxed setting, with a simple menu and NOLA-style cocktails to boot. Hit it from morning till night to indulge in everything from cheese and charcuterie to beignets. At happy hour, an eclectic list of bourbon, ginger and bitters-spiked cocktails will ease those first-date jitters without hurting the wallet.

Helen Greek Food & Wine is certainly one of the most stunning newcomers in town. The exemplary Greek wine list (the second-largest in the U.S.) is just as thoughtful as the Texas takes on traditional Greek cuisine. Get gorgeously charred octopus, Greek charcuterie and local cheese, and Black Hills pork gyros.

While the right restaurant date can be fantastic, pop-ups add a bit of excitement. At Brink Dining — an eight-seat pop-up restaurant featured at dining establishments all over town — chef Emmanuel Chavez uses fresh, local ingredients and turns them into something extraordinary. The intimate experience makes you feel as if you’re enjoying a dinner in your friend’s home (if your friend were a professional chef, that is).

the flavors of South America. The East End restaurant’s menu is as diverse as the cultures it represents. Get everything from hot grilled meats and raw ceviches to Cuban sandwiches and dishes swimming in colorful spices and sauces. Midtown’s Izakaya plays with global flavors just as brilliantly. The Japanese-inspired tavern shines with dishes like bagna càuda with mentaiko dip, brandy-cured foie in a jar, and mochi and bacon, in which the smoked pig gets wrapped around rice cakes before being skewered and grilled. Right down the street at Oporto Fooding House & Wine, diners are falling in love with the blend of Portuguese, Italian and Indian tapas.

Fancying some French? Look no further than the modest-yet-refined bistro Etoile Cuisine et Bar. Taking the gold medal in our 2015 Best of Houston — French Restaurant, the Uptown charmer dishes out consistently awesome French classics, from divine housemade pâté de campagne to impeccable steak frites and cassoulet.

A

s one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country, Houston offers an array of cuisine that spans the globe. We have everything, from hole-in-the-wall joints serving up soup dumplings and meltingly tender barbacoa to fancy French affairs complete with white tablecloths and housemade foie gras. Around the World on the Cheap One of the best parts about living in Houston is the ability to get a taste of the globe without leaving the city. Even better, you can do so without breaking the bank. Just pop into the unassuming holesin-the-wall, strip center joints, and mom-and-pops to unlock the city’s eclectic wonderment. And what better place to start than in Houston’s Chinatown? We do have the second-largest Indo-Chinese population in the United States (falling right behind L.A.), after all. Do some dim sum at Golden Dim Sum, get pho packed with rare steak, flank, brisket, tendon, tripe and meatballs at Pho Dien; hit One Dragon Restaurant for soup dumplings, get a taste of Malaysian at Banana Leaf, or spend the day exploring all of the hidden gems at the Hong Kong City Mall.

Over in Midtown, Thiên Ân is pumping out some of the most excellent banh mi in town. But you’d be remiss not to also try their banh xeo (Vietnamese crêpe). Good thing you can get both without inflicting any pain to your wallet. And with last year’s move to a new location, Asia Market has even more space at which hungry diners can enjoy fiery, real-deal Thai.

Tucked into a tiny strip mall in Montrose, La Guadalupana Bakery and Café dishes out hearty Mexican classics at unbeatable prices. Fill up on authentic barbacoa gorditas and sopes; rich, flavorful pozole; and killer breakfast tacos. Speaking of tacos, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop’s baja-style tacos are just as delicious as they are cheap. Then, representing all seven regions of Mexican cuisine, Picos on

If you’re craving ramen (and who isn’t?), slurp up milky bowls of pork tonkotsu at Tiger Den, where the scratchmade noodles are just as addicting as the broth. That’s because they age the pasta for three days to maximize the flavor. Want to wine and dine on a budget? Pakistani hotspot Himalaya is BYOB, though you may want to bring a sixpack of beer to help with the incendiary cuisine instead. Don’t miss the Hunter’s Beef; this Pakistani version of pastrami made last year’s list of the Top 100 Dishes in Houston for a reason. Bismillah Restaurant is another Pakistani favorite. Blending Pakistani and Indian spices, their tenspice chicken wings just may be the best wings in town. Vibrant & Eclectic Houston’s culinary scene truly comes together when all our cultures mix and mingle, and the melting pot of cuisines from these fun and funky spots proves just that:

For housemade pasta that will take you back to your Italian summer abroad, head to Radio Milano, in CityCentre’s Hotel Sorella. The fine-dining Italian resto’ wows with dishes like handmade tagliatelle studded with uni cream and lobster, veal cheek osso buco, and perfect-for-sharing cheese and salumi antipasto. Things get extravagant at Churrasca Brazilian Steakhouse’s endless feast, where guests can eat their way through the centuriesold fare of southern Brazil. Start with seafood and exotic cheeses before moving on to perfectly seared rib eye, bacon-wrapped filet, tender chicken, snappy pork sausage and a whole lot more. Of course, we can’t talk about Houston’s diverse culinary scene without mentioning one of its biggest proponents, chef Chris Shepherd. Take a journey through Houston and around the globe at his remarkable restaurant, Underbelly. The Korean-braised goat dumplings are enough reason to seek it out, but you’ll also get a hit list of culturally diverse hidden gems to sample, cherry-picked by Shepherd himself.

Etoile Cuisine et Bar

Perhaps one of the most iconic dishes to define this Mutt City culture is garlic buttery Vietnamese crawfish. Hit Cajun Kitchen to suck ’em down in all of their glory. Start with the garlic butter variety, then move on to the Kitchen Sink special, a wok-sautéed blend of butter, garlic, oranges and other spices. And at Calliope’s, the traditional Creole and Cajun cuisine gets a Houston spin with dishes such as pork egg rolls and crawfish, shrimp, ansausage fried rice. Blending Peruvian, Argentinean, Colombian, Chilean, Bolivian and Venezuelan cultures (to name just a few), chef David Guerrero’s Andes Cafe is the go-to spot for

Want to travel to the Caribbean? Head downtown to Calabash Island Eats, where you’ll find awesome treats like duck jerk wings, mofongo studded with juicy pork, and savory oxtail stew. For best results, wash it all down with a few spectacular island-style cocktails.

For handmade Korean noodles and a secret recipe kimchi that will make your heart sing, hit the mom and pop Korean Noodle House off Long Point near Gessner. Then eat your weight in homey Korean comfort foods like haemul pajeon (seafood pancake), kimchi soondubu jjigae (spicy kimchi tofu stew) or jjamppong kalgooksoo (spicy seafood dumpling noodle soup).

Highly revered sushi spot MF Sushi never fails to impress a date, especially if you sit at the dozen-seat sushi bar, where chef Chris Kinjo — a.k.a. “Magic Fingers” — puts on a show via a flawlessly executed omakase (chef’s tasting).

for breakfast. Hugs & Donuts is most definitely worth a wake-up call. The gourmet yeasty and cakey creations get slathered and filled with things like maple bacon, mocha cream, and even bacon, egg and cheese! Grab a few, then a few more to go alongside savory kolaches and coffee. Doughnut lovers will also love mobile eatery Doughmaker Doughnuts. Find it to get small-batch, awesomely unique creations in flavors like Mexican chocolate, vanilla cardamom and honey-butter fried chicken.

La Table (formerly TABLE on Post Oak) has debuted a standout bakery and cafe that is just begging for a visit in the a.m. Dubbed Macarons, the French-inspired bakery offers a daily breakfast, plus brioche, breads, cakes and tarts, and, of course, the bakery’s namesake macarons.

ere’s to everything chocolate-dipped, sugar-dusted, cream-dolloped and syrup-drizzled! Join us as we take a journey through Houston, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-style:

Classic & Creative Confections From traditional pastries to cookie and brownie hybrids, things in Houston are certainly sweet. Let’s start the sugar tour at Fluff Bake Bar, the imaginative Midtown spot from “Sugar Fairy” Rebecca Masson. You may have had some of Masson’s tasty treats around town before, but last year, the pastry chef opened up a bake shop of her own. Head there to get Snickerdoodles, Fluffernutters and her easy-to-devour Cup|Cakes, in which cake, icing and all things sweet come layered in a cup. We suggest the Veruca Salt, a devil’s food cake stacked with salted caramel buttercream, pretzel crunch and crunchy pearls.

Patisserie Dolce Delights by Candace Chang delights with a library of macarons that are flawlessly light and just the right amount of chewy. Don’t miss standouts like pistachio, cookies ’n’ cream, pink peppercorn & chocolate ganache, and Chang’s personal favorite, Andes mint chocolate. Traditional French pastries are done justice at Levure Bakery & Patisserie, which opened in The Woodlands last year. Hit it to indulge in incredibly delicate pain au chocolat, divine petits fours and crave-inducing kouign-amann.

Finally, the mother-and-daughter team at Mighty Sweet Mini Pies makes (you guessed it!) mighty sweet miniature pies. Get them in flavors such as pecan, pistachio cream,

MOM 2016 OVERLAY02.indd 41

After causing a frenzy in NYC, the newest craze in frozen desserts has made its way over to Chinatown. And that’s rolled ice cream. Head to the Dun Huang Plaza’s Class 502, where you’ll find cups full of Thai-style ice cream rolls in all of their Instagram-worthy glory. The ice cream gets flattened onto frozen slabs of steel before being mixed with toppings and scraped up Fruit Roll-Ups style. A final drizzle of syrups, sauces and more toppings makes sure the ice cream doesn’t skimp on deliciousness.

If it’s a variety of waffles you’re after, do yourself a favor and find The Waffle Bus. The crisp, buttery waffle sandwiches come in flavors like Nutella and banana, s’mores, and a sweet and savory buttermilk fried chicken with ancho-chile honey. And out in Rosenberg, Old Main Street Bakery keeps crowds happy with some of the best fruit- and cream-filled kolaches around. Grab some of those, then take a crack at their awesome lineup of cupcakes and pastries as well. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a morning pick-me-up from OGs like Shipley Do-Nuts and the Kolache Factory. Both have been making Houstonians’ days better for years upon years (since 1936 and 1982, respectively).

With an emphasis on local ingredients, small-batch ice cream shoppe Fat Cat Creamery remains one of the sweetest in town. As does Cloud 10 Creamery, where you’ll find outYep. Life in Houston sure is sweet! side-the-box ice creams and sorbets in flavors like brown butter & peppercorn and Earl Grey with pomegranate. You can also look out for the Hugs & Donuts SMOOSH truck, where you’ll find custom Fruity Pebbles Donut ice cream cookie sandwiches that are way better than the ice cream truck snacks from your youth. For towering Taiwanese ribbon ice, check out Chinatown’s Nu Cafe. SnowBlock Shavery has all kinds of frozen fun, from shaved, Hawaiian-style snow ice to ultrasweet crushed ice drizzled with a mixture of condensed milk, mango and strawberry puree, and evaporated milk. And for superrefreshing raspas and aguas frescas, Tampico Refresqueria is your spot.

Bundt Cake-A-Holic, a disabled-veteran-owned and -operated cake bakery, combines sweets and spirits with its unique lineup of alcohol-infused bundt cakes. Indulge in everything from strawberry daiquiri and Baileys bundts, to margarita, amaretto and rum varieties.

Ice, Ice Baby Living in Houston means things are usually pretty hot (and by things, we mean the scorching sun and your leather car seat). Good thing we have these tasty ice shops and creameries to keep us as cool as ice all year long:

Now with four locations, Coco Crêpes has freshly made crepes and waffles that will have you thinking about them all day long. Get crème brûlée crepes with strawberries, chocolate sauce and caramelized sugar; banana and cinnamon-apple treats with vanilla custard and caramel sauce; or Tuscan waffles that are perfect eye openers.

At Red Dessert Dive, in the Heights, homestyle traditions get mixed with the playful. Get old-school banana puddings, vanilla bean cheesecakes, and the Debusker — a dark chocolate Valrhona brownie and M&M cookie in one. All of it goes down beautifully with a classic café au lait.

They may have changed ownership, but Montrose’s Common Bond is as hot as ever. Especially during weekend brunch, when you’ll find a line of croissant lovers that often extends outside. But no matter what time you visit, you’ll find an outstanding roster of sweets, including sticky buns, orangeblossom-soaked and -sugared kugelhopfs, and one of the best chocolate chip walnut cookies in town. hirsty yet? So are we. Thankfully, Houston is absolutely filled to the brim with wonderful drinking establishments. From old standbys making Houston proud to pretty young things with noteworthy beer, wine and cocktail programs, here’s the inside scoop on what’s going on in Houston’s beverage scene:

Cool Cocktails & Tinctures Treadsack restaurant group — known for new restaurants Foreign Correspondents, Hunky Dory and Bernadine’s — is on fire when it comes to drink programs (the food is pretty fantastic, too). All the group’s concepts are overseen by shining-star bar director Leslie Ross, while beverage director and advanced sommelier Travis Hinkle keeps an eye on the wine side. At Thai-focused Foreign Correspondents, no meal is complete without one of Ross’s coolly compelling cocktails. Start with the Thai chile-infused green chartreuse, lemongrass and gin number for which the restaurant is named, then make your way through the rest of the standout roster.

Of course, Anvil Bar & Refuge continues to offer one of the most outstanding bar programs in town (the bar’s James Beard semi-finalist nod only further proves that point). With Clumsy Butcher and drink mastermind Bobby Anvil behind the concept, the team takes painstaking care to maintain a list of 100 favorite classics that will quench any cocktail nerd’s

If you haven’t made your way over to EaDo’s 8th Wonder Brewery, you’ll want to. Because from the throwback cream ale Dome Faux’m to the Vietnamese coffee porter Rocket Fuel, the brews here are all impressive. The operation has upped its game with a taproom and revamped outdoor space, complete with picnic tables and cornhole. Head there on Thursdays, when $8 will get you a beer flight of four 4-ounce pours and a beer token to redeem for a full beer of your choosing. On weekends, things get rowdy with live music, the Eatsie Boys food truck and special events.

If you want whiskey with your wine, Public Services Wine & Whisky — from sommelier and wunderkind Justin Vann and the ever-talented Justin Yu — is the place for you. It’s located in the old Cotton Exchange building, and offers a boutique selection of hard-to-score Old World wines and whiskeys alongside snacks like house-made baloney, complete with smoked cheese spread and Ritz crackers. And for wine with dinner, Helen Greek Food & Wine is the “it” girl of the moment. The restaurant recently received a James Beard semi-finalist nod for best new restaurant thanks to its truly stellar fare and Greek wine list, the second-largest in the country. All of this just proves that it’s never a bad time to enjoy a tasty beverage in Houston.

The seriously creative Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company vows to “break the rules” and “offer a new narrative for how we think about beer.” And it’s working. Head to the brewery for flavor-forward Arnaldo Richards’ Picos Restaurant taps of White Raz, Blood Orange Buffalo Mi Novio and infused witbier Wit Da Eff. Other favorites include Katy’s No Label Brewing Co., Conroe’s Southern Star Brewing Company, Magnolia’s Lone Pint, and Houston all-stars Karbach Brewing Co. and the 20-plus-year veteran Saint Arnold Brewing Company. If you can’t make your way to the actual breweries, have no fear: Houston’s finest craft beer bars are tapping kegs and popping bottles all over town. Revelry on Richmond offers a rotating selection of 40 craft taps, with a nice emphasis on local, plus a robust collection of bottles. Fan favorite Petrol Station is the perfect place

APRIL 2016

Then there’s Eight Row Flint, the new icehouse from chef Ryan Pera and beverage master Morgan Weber’s Agricole Hospitality (Revival Market, Coltivare). Named after an ancient variety of heirloom corn cultivated by Native Americans (which just so happens to be the first corn ever distilled into whiskey), the concept focuses on — you guessed it — whiskey! There are about 100 kinds to choose from, including a lineup of hand-picked bourbons served straight from the barrel. Beer and soul-satisfying tacos from the onsite taco truck help to keep the good times rolling.

It’s a Craft Beer’s World (and we’re just living in it) It’s official: The craft beer scene has gone full throttle, all around the country, but, more important, at home. From local breweries to the city’s best beer bars, Houston’s most knowledgeable beer geeks are continuing to change the game and spread the good word, one hoppy brew at a time.

But for straight-up boozing, you’ll want to check out Treadsack’s new bar concepts: Johnny’s Gold Brick and Canard. At JGB, a ten count of flawlessly executed classic cocktails shares the playing field with pleasantly surprising oddball concoctions like the Margarita With A Big Red Float. Ross’s Canard just opened its doors, and with such talent leading the charge, we can promise that patrons are in good hands.

thirst. If you are looking for the perfect margarita, look no further than Picos. Their extensive list of Shaker Margaritas won’t disappoint.

Even newcomers get in on the action. It didn’t take new-tothe-scene Beckrew Wine House long to make waves in Houston’s already expansive wine scene. That’s thanks to a clean look, its roster of local talent and its expertly curated 100-plus library of global small-vineyard selections, available from three-ounce pour wine flights to by-the-bottle. Sip while you savor house charcuterie and pizza (which is free on Mondays and Tuesdays when you buy a bottle).

Equally as delightful is Camerata at Paulie’s, where beverage director David Keck puts out a killer list of wines that appeal to both wine aficionados and average joes. It’s the perfect place to head before or after a dinner at neighboring Paulie’s.
