Hello Everyone, Welcome to this year’s John P. McGovern Summer Reading Program (SRP). This summer Houston Public Library is Your Space to Dream. Doesn’t that sound great? The programs and activities this summer have been designed to s-t-r-e-t-c-h your imagination and to encourage you to dream BIG dreams. So, we encourage you to join the fun and take advantage of the hundreds of exciting programs and activities just waiting for you to discover - right here, at YOUR Library. Here are highlights of some of the great programs and activities happening this year when you participate in SRP! FREE BOOKS & PRIZES We are offering lots of great prizes this year. Everyone who registers for SRP will receive a free book to keep and take home. These free books were made possible by a generous donation to the Library from Rosen Publishing. Also new this year are the S.T.R.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programs. You will be able to earn sticker badges for each program you attend. If you attend five or more S.T.R.E.A.M programs, you will win a special prize. READ DOWN YOUR FINES! In addition to being a lot of fun, reading over the summer is very important to your continued success in school. I am very excited to announce that this year, for the first time ever, we are offering an opportunity for you to read books as payment for overdue fines! We understand that from time to time your favorite books have been overdue. And, sometimes overdue fines keep you from coming to the library to borrow more books. But, we don’t want you to miss out on all the fun. We want you to take part in the SRP activities at the library. So, this summer, in addition to earning badges and prizes for reaching your reading goals, we are launching a special program called READ DOWN YOUR FINES! The Read Down Your Fines Program gives you the chance to “pay” your fines by reading books! You can find more information about the Read Down Your Fines Program on page 4. We look forward to all your BIG dreams this summer!

REGISTER: Early registration begins May 1, 2014 at www.houstonlibrary.org/summer and continues through August 1, 2014 at any Houston Public Library location during operating hours or remotely from a computer. Receive a free book, courtesy of Rosen Publishing, upon registration!* READ or listen to books, enter book titles or reading time online and in your Badge Log booklet (be sure to ask your librarian for one). Go to your local Houston Public Library to pick up your prizes at the various book reading levels.
REWARDS for reading include: • A certificate for reading 5 books or 5 hours • One free book for reading 10 books or 10 hours • Additional free book and a coupon for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for 20 books read or 20 hours • Houston Zoo admission voucher and entry into a Grand Prize drawing to win a Nintendo DSi or a LEGO 8 MP digital camera for reading 30 books or more or 30+ hours! NEW THIS SUMMER - READ DOWN YOUR FINES WHAT IS THE READ DOWN YOUR FINES PROGRAM?
Two of the Houston Public Library’s top priorities are to promote the joy of reading and to support the educational success of our children and youth. The Read Down Your Fines Program is intended to help children, tweens and teens reduce or erase their outstanding fines so they can participate in the exciting activities during our annual John P. McGovern Summer Reading Program. Reducing and erasing fines through reading for fun is beneficial to children, tweens and teens in three ways: it helps strengthen reading skills, promotes taking responsibility, and allows for the continued use of their library card.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Kids, tweens and teens up to 18 years of age who register for the Summer Reading Program can participate.
WHAT ARE THE RULES?
The Read Down Your Fines Program is part of this year’s John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program. Kids, tweens and teens will have the opportunity throughout the summer to earn coupons valued at $5.00 each that can be applied to overdue fines on their library account. • Read Down Your Fines coupons may only be used once. For example, if a $5.00 coupon is used to pay an outstanding balance of $3.00, then that same coupon may not be used again for another fine or used on another account. • All Read Down Your Fines coupons expire on August 31, 2014 and must be used by that date. After August 31, 2014 the normal policy for fines and fees goes back into effect. • Read Down Your Fines coupons may only be used for overdue fines and cannot be applied to costs associated with lost library material or to accounts already in collection.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. To participate in the Read Down Your Fines Program you must register for the John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program at any location of the Houston Public Library. You can also register online at www.houstonlibrary.org/summer, but you must visit any Houston Public Library location to claim coupons and other prizes. 2. When you register you will receive one free book and one $5.00 Read Down Your Fines coupon. 3. As you read books you will earn prizes and additional coupons. The more books you read, the more you earn. • 5 books or 5 hour level: reading certificate and one $5.00 Read Down Your Fines coupon. • 10 books or 10 hour level: one free book and one $5.00 Read Down Your Fines coupon. • 20 books or 20 hour level: one additional free book, one coupon for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and one $5.00 Read Down Your Fines coupon. • 30 books or 30 hour level: one admission voucher for the Houston Zoo, and entry into a Grand Prize drawing to win a Nintendo DSi or a LEGO 8MP digital camera, and one $5.00 Read Down Your Fines coupon.
