EDITOR’S NOTE

s I was walking the other day, invigorated by the 60degree temps and warmed by a clear blue sky filled with rays of bright sunshine, I caught a whiff of a pleasant, very familiar scent in the air. Nostalgia swept over me when I realized that wonderful aroma came drifting from a neighbor’s chimney top: A fireplace with lighted logs was keeping folks cozy inside. We’re embracing fall with open arms in this issue, starting with “Fire & Function,” which presents realistic and entertaining options for today’s log styles — such as those shown on the cover by the Real Fyre Collection from RH Peterson Co. We expand on that topic with a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright, who made fireplaces works of art and integral components of houses he designed. In fact, look for our tributes to his 150th birthday celebration with articles on Wright’s color and fabric selections, as well as furniture creations, and on his structures in his home state of Wisconsin to his only Houston project. You’ll appreciate again how Wright changed the way we build, live and design. Fall and winter mean back-to-back holidays all the way to the New Year, translating to happy gatherings of families and friends. “Spruce Up” offers great DIY ways to get ready for everyone, as well as contacts for jobs requiring professional assistance.

“Tablescapes” helps you plan for an impressive table setting and “Pumped for Pumpkin” shares a recipe from Sweet Petites for the most delectable pumpkin cheesecake ever. And for more icing on the cake, our gardening column explores “Autumn Color,” while “Editor’s Picks” suggests some fun “Fall for Extras” decorating ideas. We’re still here with a helping hand with our “After Harvey” series, and “Pet of the Month” is back as “Pets of the Month.” Three darling furry friends — and more — are just waiting for you to take them home. Ending on a happy note: A couple in the Cherryhurst neighborhood gave a 100-year-old oak tree a big hug by centering their new house around this majestic beauty. The effect of the tree is felt inside the home, as well as on the outdoor spaces. It’s spectacular…and another reason to celebrate. Cheers, Barbara
