The Right Touch of Red
When I first met Catherine and Alejandro Araiza in 2009, I was enthralled by the resilience of this young couple with two small children. Readers may recall The Araiza’s story of their kitchen reconstruction from “Changes In The Wind,” Houston House & Home, March 2011. During Hurricane Ike, a neighbor’s very tall pine tree crashed diagonally 20
through their small home all the way to the foundation, narrowly missing both sleeping children and parents. As the eye of the storm passed overhead, the couple managed to wake the children, climb over the tree inside their home in pouring rain and escape to Catherine’s mom’s dry and safe home down the street.

BEFORE AFTER: By increasing the size of the entertainment wall and painting the shelves the same color as the wall, the large bookcase now blends into the wall. Careful furniture placement allowed room for a large tree and plenty of gifts with adequate space to walk through the room.

Living in an apartment while construction workers put their flattened home back together, Catherine called me (after a referral from family friend and client, Fritzy Dean) to help her select finishes and colors and redesign their home. “I needed someone to quickly read my style and help make decisions which were just overwhelming for me. make this process easier and that we would come out with a much nicer project than we could have conceived on our own. Your experience and creativity gave us so many more options to consider and you were willing to work with our small budget,” Catherine explained. TIP: When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. A devastating storm like Hurricane Ike opens the door to make changes and improvements.
Catherine and Alejandro’s living/dining room is a small, open space and it is always a challenge to squeeze in a large Christmas tree. She loves Christmas and treasures her collection of tree ornaments, always a big highlight for the children. The couple loves a classic holiday look, with Nutcracker dolls and a beautiful tree. But the look of her living/dining room is more mid-century Danish modern with aqua accents than traditional red and green, so the two looks don’t necessarily go together. TIP: Red and green can be mixed into an aqua color scheme if done sparingly. Sherwin Williams “Believable Buff” (SW 6120) in a flat latex finish was applied to the walls.

The same color was used on the bookcase in a satin enamel finish to make the shelves practically disappear into the wall, while the natural color on the oak floors created a calm feeling in the open room. “I love the colors—they make me feel warm and good when I walk into my home and are so much better than renter’s white,” she said. Working with what they had, my design assistant Dorenda Longoria and I placed a colorful weaving and iron sleigh filled with holiday balls on the couple’s coffee

TRADE SECRETS • Think green. Editing existing holiday decorations repurposes them and saves money, too. • Paint consistently gives the most bang for the buck. Painting a large bookcase the same color as the wall visually declutters a room. • Get creative. Inexpensive cranberries can be used to add a holiday touch to a vase of flowers. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to buy more furniture and accessories for your home, but to first rethink the pieces that are already paid for.

Christmas accessories were also tucked in amongst books and everyday accessories on the bookshelves. Catherine was not surprised that my main suggestion was to reduce the holiday clutter and tone things down. The hardest thing to visualize was removing the runner that she had always put on the credenza. “I had way too much holiday stuff piled around, and you two helped make it look simple, which flows better with the normal look of our house,” she explained. Catherine really liked the way the color red was threaded throughout the decorations. “You can’t do Christmas without red, in my opinion, and I really liked how you used just enough of it in the poinsettias, candles and cranberries. Jeramie Robison, the executive chef at CINQ at La Colombe D’Or, agrees with Morgan about time spent with family and friends, sharing a special dinner. “Food brings the family together at the holidays,” he says. Robison loves seasonal fare, and offers quail as an alternative to the traditional turkey or ham, saying quail lends itself to a variety of ways of preparation. “You can do a beautiful quail gumbo,” Robison says. “Plate the quail in the bowl and then have the gumbo base in a vessel and pour it over the quail tableside for a great presentation.” Robison also recommends using citrus in your holiday meals and in décor. “Citrus is at its peak in the winter here in Houston,” he says. Natural elements offer excellent options for décor, and Rodney Brown, of Buchanan’s Bungalow says he’s seeing a trend this year in having more natural and vintage components in decorating. “A lot of mercury glass,” he says. “I notice many people are going vintage with tinsel trees. People are using fewer ornaments and more garlands.” Buchanan’s has myriad leafy garlands and rustic twig wreaths. Brown thinks that natural garlands along mantles and staircases can give a home a wonderfully welcoming look, embracing the idea that less can be more. “I love to use pretty disposable hand towels in the guest bathroom,” he says. “It’s a nice touch that shows guests you care about the small things. If you have a nice decanter, fill it with water and place it by the bedside table in the guest room. Wilson is an advocate of presenting your treasures in unexpected ways. Maybe instead of hanging heirloom ornaments on the tree, you display them in a large jar. Surround a poinsettia with moss and plant it in an old silver punch bowl. Or, perhaps put out a variety of pillows in colors that accent your room and harkens to the colors of the season. “Color is a phenomenal way to freshen a space,” she says, suggesting homeowners think about an accent wall with a glossy paint on it. She says that brighter colors show up beautifully with gloss finishes.

With entertaining, what you serve is as important as where you serve it. Jorge Valencia of El Grand Malo says any holiday party should have a bit of bubbly. “I think sparkling wines always make people smile,” he says, offering his recipe for a Champagne cocktail (see sidebar). He recommends using a budget-friendly Prosecco or a Cava. Jeannmarie Lesseraux, the owner of Cellar 17 in Champions agrees that wine can help make a holiday party. “When you have something original, it helps get conversations started,” she says. Her shop offers an array of wines from boutique producers and will help you find just the right to fit your budget and affair. She highly recommends the Kiame meritage, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. “Make everything as easy as possible. A huge variety is never necessary,” says Marcy Jimenez, manager at Houston Wine Merchant, who says Cotes du Rhones (reds and whites) are great for holiday crowds. Above all, remember that the holidays are about joy and gathering together those we love most. Handmade touches laced with love ensure a celebration that brings out the best of the season.
CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL: Muddle fresh strawberries and raspberries in a shaker. Add 1 oz. of blanco or silver tequila, 1/4 oz. each of lemon juice, agave nectar and St. Germain. Tear a basil leaf, add to the shaker, then hake ingredients to blend. Strain into a Champagne flute filled half-way with crushed ice. Top with sparkling wine and garnish with basil flowers or fresh berries.

Recipes from Chef Jeramie Robison Executive Chef CINQ and La Colombe D’Or SMOKED SAUSAGE, GULF SHRIMP, AND GRILLED STUFFED QUAIL IN A SPICY GUMBO BROTH Serves 6 Spicy Gumbo Broth 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cayenne 1 Tbsp filet 6 oz smoked sausage (sliced in thin rounds) 2 qts chicken stock 1/2 C white wine 1 C all purpose flour 1 C yellow onion (diced) 2 peeled tomatoes (chopped) 1 C celery (diced) 1 C green bell pepper (diced) 1 Tbsp garlic (minced) Salt to taste Black Pepper to taste 8 dashes Tabasco In a 6 qt sauce pot add smoked sausage over medium heat. Once the sausage is almost crispy add the onions, bell pepper, celery and

garlic. Cook until the garlic is toasted. Add the flour and reduce heat to medium low. Stir constantly until the flour is dark brown. About 20 minutes. Add the white wine and tomatoes. Reduce liquid by half. Add all dry ingredients and the chicken stock. Simmer for at least one hour on low heat. Remove from heat. Pour hot broth into a blender and spin on high for 1 minute. Pass through a fine mesh strainer. Place hot broth back into a pot and place back on the stove on low heat. Stuffing 4 C jasmine rice (cooked as directed and rinsed under cold water) 3 bunches green onion (sliced in thin rounds) 2 Tbsp parsley (chopped) Smoked sausage (cut out of casing) 1/2 lb par-boiled 16-20 shrimp (chopped) 1/4 C white wine 1 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp Tony Chachere’s seasoning 2 Tbsp butter Melt the butter in a large sauté pan over high heat. Once the butter begins to foam add smoked sausage and sauté for 1 minute. Add the white wine and all dry ingredients. Add the rice and reduce the heat to medium. Cook for another minute. Remove from heat and refrigerate. Once cooled stuff seasoned quail.

Quail 6 each boneless quail 1/2 tbsp garlic powder 1 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp cayenne 1/4 tsp cumin 1 Tbsp salt 1 Tbsp pepper 5 sprigs tarragon(chopped) 4 oz olive oil DIRECTIONS: Preheat grill to 400 degrees. Mix all dry ingredients in a small bowl. Place the quail in a 9” x 12” pan and coat the quail with olive oil. Season the quail inside and out with the spice and herb mixture. Place stuffed quail on grill and close the lid. Let cook for 6 minutes and turn once to get a nice cross hatch grill mark on the quail. Cook for another 6 minutes and remove. Set the quail on a plate and reserve.
Note: You can also bake the quail in the oven at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Place the grilled or oven baked quail in the bottom of 8inch soup bowl. Pour the gumbo broth around the quail. About 1/2 way up the quail. Place one whole grilled green onion over quail and serve.

3 loaves day-old French bread (cut into 1/2 inch cubes) 22 whole eggs 2 qts whole milk 1 Tbsp vanilla paste 1/2 C bourbon 1 qt granulated sugar
Chill 6 long rectangular plates. Slice the avocado in half and remove the seed. With a spoon, remove the avocado from the skin. With the avocado flat side down, slice in 1/4 inch slices. Lay 5 grapefruit segments down on the plate 2 inches apart. Place the sliced avocado in between the grape fruit. Season avocado with kosher salt. Pour olive oil over baby arugula and season with salt and pepper. Crumble blue cheese over grapefruit and avocado segments. Place arugula over blue cheese and put one teaspoon of grapefruit juice over the arugula.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Turn on your convection setting if applicable. In a mixing bowl, combine the eggs, sugar, vanilla, bourbon, and milk. Whisk until the eggs are incorporated. Pour batter into a 12 x 20-inch baking pan. Place bread into batter and smash bread down so it begins to soak up the liquid. Let it set for 30 minutes then bake for 45 minutes. The top should be golden brown and there should be no runny liquid seeping around the bread.

DARING ARCHITECT ALLEN BIANCHI’S CONTEMPORARY DESIGN BRIGHTENS A QUIET CORNER OF THE MUSEUM DISTRICT

This is the story of a Houston couple, he a Wisconsin native and she a native of Germany, had lived in Heights cottage for several years when the decided they were ready to build a modern home. They focused their search on neighborhoods within the city, closer to the Museum District and its universities. The pair of geologists sought to find the right piece of land and build a home that was sturdy, durable and beautiful, in other words, very much like a rock, something geologists are quite familiar with. As fans of modern architecture, the couple had already admired the work of Allen Bianchi, AIA, when they discovered a home designed by Bianchi being built in collaboration with Yigal Kass of Crestview Homes. The modern enthusiasts fell in love with the project immediately and worked with Realtor Dennis Pow-Sang to purchase the home, located a few blocks from The Menil Collection.

UNDERCOVER KITCHEN Designer Anne Breux of Interior Architecture was already on board with the project, a fortunate circumstance for the new owners. Making just a few modifications to the initial floor plan, the new owners were thrilled with their newly found dream home in progress. “Anne could help us make decisions for the interior,” says the wife. “She really understood our desire for a Bauhaus-like home.” The couple wanted a contemporary, German design-inspired kitchen, so they hired local craftsman Alex Cubelli of Architectural Design Cabinet Works to custom build the streamlined, all-white kitchen, which features pure white Corian countertops. “We really do love the white Corian countertop,” says the wife. “We wanted the kitchen to be nice and closed up and tidy. We actually didn’t want it to look like a kitchen.” “Yes, that was important because the kitchen is part of the continuous living space,” the husband says. The couple raves about Anne Breux’s design and organization of the island, which provides a world of unobtrusive storage.

SUBLIME SIMPLICITY “Our home was built and designed for this lot,” says the wife. “Allen Bianchi is from Houston and he understands where to put windows, and also how to create privacy in a house that has a lot of glass.” The couple says they enjoy seeing blue sky through those wellplaced windows daily. “The house is bright, cheerful and relaxing all at once,” says the husband. “For us, the architecture is like art,” says the wife. “It’s artwork you can walk through and live in.” No moldings or trims adorn the walls and ceilings of the home and the décor is intentionally minimal. The couple found that they had to be very careful with selecting new items to introduce into their home. With the crisp architecture and simple color palette, one item can make a huge impact. the kitchen and a vivid motorcycle painting in the stair landing are fine examples of this. Designer Anne Breux presented a selection of materials to the couple to help them make their decisions on the calming color palette. “When I come into a project, I respect the architect’s work first, and then select materials,” says Breux. “I make sure everything works together. For this home, it was best to use many of the same materials inside and out, rather than create a patchwork of various materials.” To complement the white stucco walls, the same neutral stone flooring was used inside and out to extend the living space outdoors. A deep grey brick provides a sturdy counterpoint to airy white walls and expanses of glass and powder-coated metal shelves accents as an understated accent. Bianchi’s design of the home, which sits on a corner lot, takes advantage of each day’s shifting sunlight. The front of the home is dominated by crisp, white stucco walls, while the side elevation is almost equal parts stained cedar fence, white stucco and grey brick.

The master bedroom blends natural colors and textures, which harmonize with the outdoor views. The sense of space in the bedroom flows onto the serene patio and courtyard, where outdoor furniture from the 1966 Collection by Richard Schulz serves as a constant invitation to enjoy a quiet moment. 71
“Allen caused the light to play quite brilliantly,” says the husband. “Its not just a white box, because elements of the house add angles to other elements so you’ll see shadows play on the side of the house throughout the day. It’s always very interesting.” One thing that attracted them to the plan was having the master bedroom on the first floor. The master bedroom enjoys the view into the generous, private courtyard. The couple appreciates Bianchi’s layout of the master bathroom. “His design is quite minimal and does not disrupt the sense of calm,” say the husband. “It flows together, rather than being chopped up into sections.” The second floor of the home provides various optional spaces, such as guest quarters, an office and flexible lounge space that functions as a Zen room, exercise area and reading nook. The lounge area opens onto a balcony. This inviting outdoor space sits above the master bedroom and overlooks both the private courtyard and the surrounding neighborhood, further connecting the interior to the outdoors. “I appreciate how a lot of the elements, such as the brick, go right out to the outside and come inside as well,” says the husband. “It makes it feel like the house is participating in the outside, especially with all the windows.” “Yes, it’s a wonderful outside effect,” says the wife.
