Union manager Peter Nowak has an injury concern for the first playoff game in club history. Veljko Paunovic, who has started 12 of the last 14 games since the start of August, missed the regular season finale with a right hamstring strain and has not returned to full training. “Those kinds of injuries, you never know how it’s going play out. I don’t think it was anything major or that you would say that he’ll be out the whole series," Nowak said. "I’m not a doctor; I’m trying to find out what’s going to be the best recipe for [his return].” ... After missing four consecutive games with a right hip flexor injury, Danny Mwanga has featured in the last two games, playing the second half in the season finale. “I think at this point, I’m back at 100 percent. I think I got my speed back," Mwanga said. Said Sébastien Le Toux: “We need him. He’s a big piece up top with me. He can score big goals and I’m sure he’s going to help us. And maybe for the next game, I can play with him up top from the first minute and we can re-find our connection.” ... While it's Union's first playoff game in their second season, six players -- Danny Califf, Brian Carroll, Justin Mapp, Freddy Adu, Stefani Miglioranzi and Le Toux -- have a combined 27 playoff berths, seven title game appearances and five championships. “We haven’t held team meetings or anything but certainly in our own little way we’re tying to convey the kind of attitude you need to take into the playoffs,” said Califf. “There’s more emotion, more urgency, and everyone is juiced. I think we’re going to be ready.” ... All season, Nowak has chopped and changed his lineups and his tactics. In the season finale, he lined up Le Toux as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1, then when Mwanga came on at halftime along with Freddy Adu, it became a 4-1-3-2. “We had guys who can really play the ball to the feet and try to spread it out,” Nowak said. “We had Sebastien Le Toux and Justin Mapp with their speed up top as well. We didn’t have that good fluidity throughout the game. ... Bringing on Freddy as well, he’s another technical player, so it gave us more options. Brian [Carroll] still did a good job in the middle. It gave us a little more going forward." The Dynamo enter the postseason as the hottest team in MLS, unbeaten in their last six (4-0-2). “This team, the last five or six games, has been under a lot of pressure,” Kinnear said. “... One game we’d be top of the conference and then we’d be fourth or fifth after the weekend was over. We’ve played catch up quite a bit this year and the last five or six have been a test for this group, home or away, and I think we’ve handled it well.” ... Key Dynamo contributors have also come into form. Brad Davis won the MLS assist title with his 16th assist in the season finale; he has three in the last four games. "The playoffs are a whole different story. This year has been a year where a lot of young guys have learned a lot," Davis said. "We started well and had a little lull in the middle of the year, but there is no better time to start playing well and I think the team has done that well." ... Carlo Costly scored his first league goal in the finale. “I think it’s huge for him,” said Davis. “He’s got a good mentality, and he’s continued to work hard. We knew it was going to come for him, and the way things are going hopefully he can rattle off a couple of more. Now’s the best time for him to start scoring goals.” ... The win against LA in the season finale also gave Dominic Kinnear his 100th league win, the fifth MLS coach to hit the century mark. “People doubted him early in the season, and look at what he’s done with us this year,” said Geoff Cameron. “It’s a tribute to him as a coach and his hard work, day in and day out, and his putting the right team out there. He’s got us in the playoffs, and we’re going to make a run for it.” ... The win against the Galaxy also pulled the Dynamo out of a potential wild card game. “Getting that week to rest, especially for guys who have some injuries here and there; it gives us some time to get back to 100 percent and get ready for a big playoff game,” said Cameron. “Missing the playoffs last year left a nasty taste in our mouth. Now back into it, we want to make a run for the cup.” ... Bobby Boswell scored his fifth goal in the season finale, pulling him into a four-way tie for the Dynamo's scoring lead. Two of the four are the current first-choice central defense pair: Boswell and Cameron.

The only goal of the game came after just five minutes. A long throw into the box from Sheanon Williams from the right was turned onto the post by Sebastien Le Toux, but Danny Califf was there to prod home the rebound. Union won for the second consecutive season in Houston. The club’s first-ever win on the road in their expansion season came against Houston, one of just two away wins on the season.



Union took the lead in the 19th minute. Jack McInerney finished off a beautiful give-and-go with Sébastien Le Toux, flicking the ball past Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall with his right foot from inside the area for the opener. Le Toux hit the post when in on goal alone in the 84th minute, a miss that would haunt the home side seconds later, when Geoff Cameron ripped a long-range drive that sailed past Philadelphia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon for the leveler.

LAST MATCH VS. HOUSTON DYNAMO

Philadelphia Union will compete in their first MLS Cup Playoffs this Sunday when they host Houston Dynamo at PPL Park for the first match of a two-legged aggregate series. Philadelphia are coming off a 1-0 loss against local rival New York Red Bulls which saw the Union drop from second to third in the Eastern Conference. Houston Dynamo lined up against LA Galaxy in the last game of the MLS regular season and won by a score of 3-1 to jump from a wildcard finish into second place in the East. Houston Dynamo have yet to beat Philadelphia Union in their four meetings.

The last time Philadelphia Union met Houston Dynamo was in early August. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after Geoff Cameron’s late equalizer spoiled a strong Philadelphia performance. It was Philadelphia who took control of the game early when Jack McInerney tallied his first goal of the 2011 season. In the 15th-minute Colin Clark gave the ball up in his own half leaving Houston vulnerable at the back. Jack McInerney collected the loose ball and quickly found Sebastien Le Toux who returned the pass to McInerney who was making intelligent run off the ball. The forward found himself one-on-one with the keeper and was able to poke it past him, 1-0 Philadelphia. Shortly after, in the 18th-minute, Philadelphia found themselves in a four-on-two counter attack. Sheanon Williams’ pass was a fraction too late or else it would have been McInerney’s second of the night. After the break it was McInereney again creating for Philadelphia. On an early cross from Gabriel Farfan, the youngster recovered from a poor first touch with what was almost a spectacular acrobatic volley. In the dying moment of the game, Stefani Miglioranzi bent a beautiful through ball behind the defense to Le Toux whose shot was kept out by the post. The miss would prove costly. Just a minute later Geoff Cameron collected the ball from about 20 yards outside the Philadelphia penalty box and fired a shot into the right corner past an outstretched Mondragon. LAST MLS MATCH In the last game of the 2011 regular season, Philadelphia Union travelled to Red Bull Arena with an intention to secure first place in the Eastern Conference and to also play spoiler to their East coast rivals. New York, as expected, came out with an offensive approach needing a result to ensure a 2011 playoff berth. Dane Richard got New York ahead early in the 7th-minute when he scored a goal that few would expect of him. The five-foot-seven midfielder was left open in the middle of the box and was able to head the ball off the post, into the back of Faryd Mondragon and then back into the net. After a first half which saw New York control the majority of possession, Philadelphia made two substitution during the break. Danny Mwanga and Freddy Adu replaces Amobi Okugo and Zach Pfeffer in an effort to spark the Philly offense. Although Philadelphia pressured the New York backline throughout the second half, they were unable to find an equalizer. Sebastien Le Toux orchestrated the best opportunity when he sent a free kick from distance into the box. It appeared as though Valdes headed the ball into the back of the net, but was in an offside position and the goal was disallowed. The loss ended Philadelphia Union’s eight game unbeaten streak, a club record. DOOPIN’ TO THE CUP Philadelphia Union are celebrating their first ever MLS Cup playoff run with their “Doopin’ To the Cup” promotion. HOUSTON ACQUAINTENCES

The first time Philadelphia Union met Houston Dynamo, they were able to record their first franchise away victory. After going into the half with a 1-0 lead, Philadelphia let two slip less than 15 minutes after the break. In an inspired final 30 minutes, Sebastien Le Toux equalized in the 69th-minute and Danny Mwanga scored deep into stoppage time to steal the three points with a 3-2 victory. The goal was the young forward’s second extra time goal in two games, the previous coming in a 1-1 tie against FC Dallas.

Philadelphia Union and Houston Dynamo have ten players that went to the same NCAA universities, all of whom come from the ACC. Houston’s Eddie Robinson (’9600), Corey Ashe (’03-06) Tyler Deric (’07) and Alex Dixon (’08-10) all spent time on Tobacco Road at the University of North Carolina, joining Philadelphia’s Sheanon Williams (’08) and Michael Farfan (’09-10). Houston’s Jason Garey (’02-05) went to the University of Maryland, as did Philadelphia’s Danny Califf (’98-00), Thorne Holder (‘07) and Zac MacMath (’08-10). Philadelphia assistant / goalkeeper coach Rob Vartughian coached and scouted for Maryland for seven straight seasons before moving to Philadelphia in 2009.

DYNAMO @ UNION – 10/02/2010 In the team’s second meeting, a pair of first half goals led to a 1-1 tie at PPL Park. Aside from conceding a goal in the 11th-minute, a solid defensive performance saw Philadelphia keep out 17 shots and 13 corner kicks. Manager Peter Nowak decided to rest some of his regulars including Danny Califf, Stafani Miglioranzi, Fred and Justin Mapp allowing a chance for younger players to shine. Roger Torres, in particular, made his presence known when he sent a perfect ball to Sebastien Le Toux to even the score at one. The 19-year old Colombian proved to be a handful for the Houston defense throughout the match. UNION @ DYNAMO – 3/19/2011 In the opening game of Houston’s final season at Robertson Field, Philadelphia Union scored early and were able to hold on to a 1-0 lead. The result was largely due to a fearless defensive performance. The backline was able to keep out 19 shots and eight corner kicks from Houston Dynamo. The win was one that set the tone for the season, instilling a confidence that the team could get the job done away from PPL Park after a 2-12-1 road record during the inaugural 2010 season. The only goal came when Sheanon Williams threw the ball into the box and found Sebastien Le Toux about six yards out. His shot ricocheted off the cross bar where Danny Califf was waiting to poke it in. The tally was the defender’s first goal with the Union.

DYNAMO BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS Houston Dynamo have a rich history of qualifying for the MLS playoffs. Since their inaugural season in 2006, Houston has made the playoffs every season besides 2010. In those four appearances they have made the Championship Final three times (2006, ‘07, ‘09) and MLS Cup twice (‘06, ‘07), winning on both occasions. Philadelphia Union are looking to mimic Houston’s sophomore success and show the Texas club an early exit this time around.

CARROLL’S CONSISTENCY Although Philadelphia Union field one of the youngest teams in this MLS Cup playoffs there are players in the squad who boast years of experience. Sunday will mark Brian Carroll’s ninth consecutive season as a member of a team in the MLS playoffs. Since the 2003 season with D.C. United, Carroll has logged 1,662 post season minutes. During that time he has made it to the semifinals three times (’04, ’06 and ‘08) and the finals twice (’04 and ‘08). He won the MLS Cup both times he made it to the finals, once with Nowak and D.C. United in 2004 and once with Columbus Crew in 2008.

MOVEMBER MOUSTACHE MONTH During the MLS Cup 2011, Soccer Kicks Cancer will support and participate in Movember, a moustache growing charity event that raises funds for men’s health, specifically cancers affecting men. Along with members of the Philadelphia Union Front Office, Stefani Miglioranzi and coaches John Hackworth and Rob Vartughian will also participate. DANGEROUS DYNAMO In their push for the 2011 MLS Cup playoffs, Houston have put together a nice run of form. Over their last five matches Dynamo’s results look like this: W-W-D-W-W. In their final game of the season they beat a LA Galaxy team who was resting most of their starters. Philadelphia Union have also enjoyed a string of quality results heading into the playoff race. Aside from their misstep against New York Red Bulls in the last game of the season, Philadelphia were riding an eight game unbeaten streak, the best in franchise history.

PLAYOFF DATES Major League Soccer announced the official MLS Cup 2011 playoff dates on August 9. Wild Card games will take place on October 26-27; Conference Semifinal first and second legs will run from October 29-30 and November 2-3, respectively. Conference Championships will be played on November 5-6 with MLS crowning a 2011 champion at the Home Depot Center on November 20. There is a gap between the Conference Championship matches and the MLS Cup Final because FIFA has reserved November 11th and 15th for international fixtures. DYNAMO AT PHILADELPHIA UNION The Houston Dynamo open the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs on the road on Sunday, taking on second-year club Philadelphia. The teams were separated by one point during the regular season, with Houston edging the Union for second place despite Philadelphia’s 1-0-1 record in the season series. The Dynamo have tied 1-1 in both matches at PPL Park, one on October 2, 2010 and one on August 6, 2011.

PLAYOFF NOTES 

Houston is 6-4-3 all-time in the MLS Cup Playoffs (counting the 2006 final as a tie). The Dynamo won championships in 2006 and 2007 and reached the Western Conference final in 2009. Houston has now been the No. 2 seed in its conference in four of five appearances, reaching the conference final in each of the three previous instances.



The Dynamo have only scored first in three of their 13 all-time playoff games, winning all three by shutout. Houston is 3-4-2 when allowing the first goal, including come-from-behind wins in the 2006 Western Conference final, the 2007 Western Conference semifinal second leg, and the 2007 MLS Cup.



Of Houston’s 17 all-time playoff goals, a remarkable 14 have been scored after the 60th minute, including four overtime goals. Three of those were scored by forward Brian Ching, with a tying header in the 2006 MLS Cup final and game-winners in the second leg of Western Conference semifinals in 2007 and 2009. Ching ranks second among active players with seven playoff goals, trailing only Landon Donovan (17).



Midfielder Brad Davis has appeared in all 13 Dynamo playoff games, starting 12, while forward Brian Ching has started 12 but missed the 2007 MLS Cup final due to injury.



Three of the five starters return from Houston’s defense in the 2009 playoffs, which saw the Dynamo record a shutout streak of 312 minutes (fourth-longest in MLS postseason history). Defenders Bobby Boswell, Geoff Cameron, and Andre Hainault are all playing the same positions, with Corey Ashe taking over the left back spot and Tally Hall stepping into goal.



Seven of the Dynamo’s 11 projected starters have playoff experience, although only three (Boswell, Ching, Davis) have appeared in at least 10 playoff games. Goalkeeper Tally Hall and midfielders Luiz Camargo, Danny Cruz, and Adam Moffat are likely to make their respective playoff debuts on Sunday.



According to MLSsoccer.com writer Elijah Miller, the Dynamo are the youngest team to qualify for the 2011 playoffs, with an average age of 26.44 through the first 33 games of the season, slightly younger than Eastern Conference opponents Kansas City (26.74), Columbus (26.90), and Philadelphia (27.00). That statistic is calculated by multiplying a player’s age by minutes played and dividing by a team’s total minutes played. Houston’s regular lineup includes Danny Cruz (21); Luiz Camargo (24); Corey Ashe, Andre Hainault, and Adam Moffat (25); and Geoff Cameron and Tally Hall (26).

DYNAMO NOTES 



Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear earned his 100th career MLS regular season win in last Sunday’s regular-season finale. Kinnear became the fifth coach in league history to reach that milestone, joining Seattle coach Sigi Schmid (157), LA coach Bruce Arena (128), Bob Bradley (124), and Steve Nicol (112). Kinnear has quality to go with his quantity: his .567 career winning percentage ranks fourth in league history. Since a 3-0 loss at Chivas USA on July 23, the Dynamo have been one of the top teams in MLS, posting a 7-2-4 record in their last 13 games to clinch a playoff spot. That stretch includes a 7-1 record against Western Conference teams; Houston is 9-5-4 on the season against its former conference. Brazilian midfielder Luiz Camargo has started the last six MLS games for the Dynamo, and the team has posted a 4-0-2 record in those contests. The insertion of Camargo has allowed Geoff Cameron to shift to center back and has, for the last five games, pushed Andre Hainault to right back. The Dynamo have allowed just three goals from open play in six games with Camargo in midfield. Midfielder Brad Davis, a league MVP candidate, finished the season with 16 assists, the most in MLS and a career high. Davis also led the league in chances created, both overall and from the run of play, according to MLS stats partner Opta. In all competitions, Davis has recorded at least 11 assists for the Dynamo in five of his six seasons, falling short of that total only in 2007, when he missed 13 MLS games due to injury. Midfielder Danny Cruz has missed time due to injury in his third professional season, but the Dynamo are 6-2-5 when the 21-year-old sparkplug starts a match. All-Star Geoff Cameron has made seven starts on defense in 2011, including the final six games. When Cameron starts on defense, home or away, Houston’s goals against average has been exactly 1.00, while it rises to 1.31 in other road games and 1.26 in all other MLS games with Cameron not on defense. Although Houston’s wins in its final two road games of the season were its first road wins of the year, the Dynamo were among the hardest teams to beat all year when playing away from Robertson Stadium. Houston ranked second in the league in road ties with nine, trailing only New York (10), and tied for the fourth fewest road losses of any team with six, trailing Seattle (3), New York (5), and LA (5). Houston has scored in the final 11 minutes to win or tie a game on 10 separate occasions this season, including six times in a nine-game span from August 6-September 24. With a 10-3-4 home record, the Dynamo finished tied for second in MLS in home points per game (2.0) and tied the club record for home regular season wins, set in 2008 with a 10-1-4 record. The Dynamo are 6-0-2 in their last eight home games, dating back to a 2-0 loss to Columbus on June 18. Houston scored first in 14 out of 34 games on the season; the Dynamo are 9-1-4 when notching the first goal and 3-8-7 when the opponent scores first; there have been two 0-0 ties. Houston’s 10 results when allowing the first goal tied Seattle for the most in MLS; the Dynamo’s winning percentage when allowing the first goal (.361) ranked third. The Dynamo earned come-from-behind ties in all five of their regular-season visits to the United States’ Eastern Time Zone in 2011. Houston rallied for ties at New York (4/2), at D.C. United (6/25), at Philadelphia (8/6), at New England (8/17), and at Columbus (9/14).

SPREADING THE WEALTH The Dynamo received goals from 17 different players in 2011 out of a total of 25 field players who have taken the field in an MLS game. Houston has seven players with at least four goals, including co-scoring leaders Bobby Boswell, Geoff Cameron, Brian Ching, and Will Bruin with five goals each and Colin Clark, Brad Davis, and Cam Weaver with four goals apiece.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER The Dynamo scored 23 of their 45 goals (51.1%) in the final 15 minutes of a half, portions of the game that combine to make up 30 percent of a match. Houston scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes, second in MLS.

Davis is the all-time club leader in games played in all competitions (197) and MLS (159); games started in all competitions (179) and MLS (145); minutes played in MLS (12,372); and assists in all competitions (71) and MLS (62).
