“HARNESS THE POWER OF HARRIS COUNTY” Our community gave my family a chance and I want to give back.

P.2

TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 2018 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY IN HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS

HARNESS THE POWER OF HARRIS COUNTY Our community gave my family a chance and I want to give back.

I was born in Colombia at the height of the drug war and my family arrived in Houston knowing almost nobody. Seizing every opportunity, I was able to attend great public schools, walk through safe neighborhoods on my way home, and attend world-class universities. I want a fair chance for every person in Harris County.

Our current Commissioners Court has the wrong spending priorities. Not enough is being done to protect our streets from flooding, to promote housing and homeownership, and to ensure all neighborhoods are safe. We are spending too much on a criminal justice system that is inefficient and unjust and not enough on jobs.

More broadly, we should use the attention that comes with leading the third largest County in the most powerful country in the world, to stand up for our community on issues like immigration and bail reform. This is why elections matter. We need fresh leadership. My name is Lina Hidalgo, and I am running for Harris County Judge so that everyone can have the same opportunities I did.

We know what Harris County looks like today, but imagine what it could look like tomorrow. I know from my experiences as an immigrant and from work with our communities that even the smallest of policies, done right, can change people’s lives and lift us all up. I hope you’ll join me in creating a bright future for all of us.

GRETCHEN HIMSL VALUES OUR VOTE! DEAR HISD DISTRICT I RESIDENTS

My name is Gretchen Himsl and I would like to serve as your HISD Trustee for District I.

I am the mother of two current HISD students and have spent the past nine years working in our schools as a parent, volunteer, and PTA president. I currently work as a child policy advocate for a local non-profit organization, and as a reading tutor for English Language Learners. Earlier in my career I spent many years working on the state budget with the House Appropriations Committee in Austin. I am running to bring my hands-on experience and broader policy experience to the school board, with the goal of giving every District I student an opportunity to attend great HISD schools in their neighborhoods, and graduate ready for college or a career. We are going to do this by:

- Building vibrant educational environments at every school - Strengthening student pathways to success - Improving equity in state and local funding

I have seen first hand what our schools are capable of when teachers, administrators, students and communities work together, and receive the necessary support from the state and the district. I also have seen how much work we still need to do. I look forward to the conversation we will have during this campaign, and earning your vote for trustee. Please join us by signing up for updates, putting out a yard sign, volunteering, or contributing. Let's sharpen our pencils and get to work!

Sincerly,

Endorsement JUDGE RENEE MAGEE: “Elected as Judge of the 337th Criminal District Court in 2012, I have served in the criminal justice system for the past 25 years. In November, 2016, I, along with every other Republican elected official on the ballot, was swept out of office in Harris County. I am seeking to continue my work as Judge in 2018, on the 184th District Court, a criminal court bench vacated upon the retirement of the current republican Judge. I bring strong conservative principles and many years of experience to the bench. I am asking for your support again in 2018.”

Terry Lowry

Editor, The Link Letter Host, "What's Up" Radio Program

"Renee Magee is one of the very few of whom you can say has unmatched credentials for the 184th Criminal District Court. Renee Magee had a long tenure at the District Attorney's office prior to her election as judge in 2012 and was respected on the bench. Renee's commitment to conservative principles is beyond reproach. Personally, Renee is deeply committed to her family and it is reflected in their commitment to her political endeavors. I am glad to endorse Renee Magee for the Judge of the 184th Criminal District Court and we be working hard to see her back on the bench."

“We Must Continue to Challenge the Establishment!” By Travis McGee

Congratulations to both Karla Brown and Gerry Wayne Monroe the better/best candidate doesn't always win and sad to say most voters are uninformed on issues that effect them and some just don't give a damn at all. You all have nothing to be ashamed of, because running for public office has never been about merit ,or what you have done, but instead it's about what the establishment can get you to do if you not truly committed to We The People. There is still plenty to be done in this very corrupt school district and that's where the TRUE victory will be won....... Thank Yall for challenging the establishment.

On HISD 9:

DURREL K. DOUGLAS: “In my opinion, there are PROs and CONs to each of the candidates. I know each of them, and they're cool people who have a passion for progress, they just don't see the same method to getting it.”

Wanda Adams:

Pro: She's consistent, you know what to expect. She has governing experience. She's able to build consensus. Con: She's less likely to BUCK the system. She's part of the establishment.

Gerry Wayne Monroe:

Pro: He's authentic, tell-it-like-it-is. He doesn't follow the instruction manual, yet he gets things done. He didn't just show up yesterday. Con: Like me, he's "hard-headed." LOL. His passion might make it hard to build consensus on a board of 9 where you get nothing done without a majority. Oh, and he's most likely to get escorted out of a meeting for cussing out the superintendent...LOL

Karla Brown:

THE PEOPLE”

Pro: She's the only one who knows what it's like to be a teacher and administrator. Though she's a Dr., she knows how to code-switch. She seems like the type to be able to both talk shit at a domino table, then give a professional development at a local school afterward. Con: Other than the fact she's the least known of the three, I honestly can't think of any. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of the day, voters had to decide who they wanted based on how either of the three candidates would guide the board. “I see Monroe being another Jolanda Jones, which could actually be an asset if done the right way. Sometimes you do have to put your finger in somebody face to make them act. Adams is most like Skillern-Jones: calculated, well-mannered, and easier to get along with. Brown falls somewhere between the two,” says Douglas.
