Salute to “Our” 2018 Trailblazers

We live in a political climate where friendships are breaking down under the weight of differing political ideologies. But not here! We at Houston Business Connections Magazine© are proud of our diverse readership — and their uncanny ability go into voting booths with an open mind, and heart. As for me, I thank God Almighty everyday for Believers like Judge John Schmude, and his wife Kelly. Yes, Judge Schmude is a conservative, but he’s also a Believer who puts God first — and he’s guided by his faith and recognition that families are the first and firmest foundation upon which any healthy society is built. Since 1980 our friends, Jimmy and Cheryl Coleman at Greater Houston Consulting and Tax Services, Inc. (GHCT) has been helping Houstonians to rest a little easier when it comes to knowing that their tax related business has been taken care of. Call Jimmy or Cheryl at (713)723-2005 today! Or stop by 12606 Hillcroft at South Main, Houston, TX and tell them that Aubrey R. Taylor told you about them.

ELECTIONS MATTER! But when we fail to go to the polls to make our voices heard — we are the ones who silence ourselves. When we fail to show up — we are the ones who disenfranchise ourselves. When we fail to inform, inspire, and become politically engaged in a positive way — we are the ones who suppress our own vote. In 2018 we must make it our business to become better informed, organized and energized. So in the spirit of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we at Houston Business Connections Magazine© will be promoting modern-day African American trailblazers in business, politics, entertainment, and ministry from now through Tuesday, November 6, 2018. But we won’t stop there, we will also be promoting all the other “TRAILBLAZERS” who value, appreciate, respect, and ask for our vote, prayers, and support. So, this particular “NON-PARTISAN” campaign features some of the key 2018 African American Democratic and Republican candidates who are running for their respective party’s nomination in key “CONTESTED RACES” on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in Harris County, Texas. But it also features key candidates who are running for their party’s nomination “UNCHALLENGED” as well. Make no mistake about it, the Tuesday, November 6, 2018, Midterm Election is undoubtedly shaping up to be the single most important election in the history of our great nation! So every single vote will matter! And we assure you that every single vote will count!

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“I was honored to serve as Judge of the 507th Family District Court and I ask for your vote to return to the family court bench.”

There’s no mistaking how big a role African Americans will play at the ballot box in Harris County, Texas on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. “The only question I have is how many African American candidates will actually make it through the nomination process in Harris County, Texas,” says Aubrey R. Taylor, publisher of Houston Business Connections Magazine©. “So, to help increase awareness, as part of our voter education, empowerment, and engagement drive, we’re proud to announce that we’re going to produce a “KEEPSAKE EDITION” of our magazine to remember this historic moment in our nation’s history,” he says.

LETITIA PLUMMER FOR U.S. CONGRESS 22ND DISTRICT OF TEXAS

I grew up in Houston watching my father make a difference in people’s lives every day through his dental practice, and It was his example that inspired me to pursue my own career. Today, I am a woman on a mission, to give people great smiles, boosting their confidence and sense of self-worth. Thanks to years of hard work and perseverance, and with the support of the best staff any small business owner could ask for, I own a successful dental practice with two locations serving the communities of the 22nd Texas Congressional District. My practice was not my first venture into owning a business, however. Shortly after graduating from Atlanta’s historic Spelman College, I started a company called Safe Hands selling latex gloves. While I felt sure I wanted to follow my father into dentistry, I wanted to gain experience managing a business first. I quickly learned that managing a small business is one of the toughest things you can do—and I was hooked. The rewards of running my own business gave me the courage to return to school and pursue my dental career. Being self-employed has helped me develop a well-rounded perspective on the challenges

faced by middle income families today. I am confronted by the flaws in our healthcare system every day. I’ve found it difficult to find affordable, adequate coverage through the plans available to small employers like myself. If the heart of the American Dream is the ability to control your own destiny, then we need legislation that empowers people to innovate and forge new paths. Rather than hamper would-be entrepreneurs with unmanageable healthcare costs, we need to fix the Affordable Care Act for all Americans. I know I’ve been lucky. I chose a great career, and I was born at a time when a middleclass girl’s fresh out of college could launch a company, then build up a business to be able to overcome the inevitable bumps in the road. The opportunities available to young people of people trying to change careers today are not the same as those I or my parents had. These are not small problems. I’ve watched middle-class families get squeezed from every side by a political process that’s left their lives hanging in the balance. I decided it wasn’t enough to be angry about it anymore—it’s time to take action. I’ve served my community as a health care provider and an employer. Now I want to serve the people of Texas’ 22nd District in Congress.

DEAR PRECINCT 7 REGISTERED VOTERS:

I am seeking this position because first I believe that I am qualified. Second, I believe that it is time for new leadership. I want to Bring Back the People’s Court. That means opening up the courthouse doors to the community in which it serves. It also means providing services, such as educational training, social services, and resources to Pro Se litigants who cannot afford legal representation. My goal is to partner with organizations in our community to provide additional services to those in need. Below are five ways, in which I plan to accomplish this goal: • Enhance courthouse technology by creating a ”Courthouse App” • Hold monthly night court and/or weekend court • Establish an onsite resource center for Pro Se Litigants • Open up the courthouse doors and allow organizations and professionals to host educational seminars • Work with the Constable’s office to promote safety in the community

...LET’S GO!!!

God will indeed prosper what He has in mind for us to do if we yield our mind, body, spirit, soul, and resources to His will and purpose for us individually, corporately and politically. So let’s work together as we harken to the spirit of God as He orders our steps, and imparts into us ”ALL” the wisdom, discernment, favor, and grace we need to change lives and claim more territory for the KINGDOM with a more potent GROUND-GAME.
