BUMBERSHOOT September 05 - 07

Seattle, Washington US

Bumbershoot is an annual international music and arts festival held in Seattle, Washington. One of North America’s largest such festivals, it takes place every Labor Day weekend at Seattle Center, which was built for the 1962 World’s Fair. The name of the festival was taken from bumbershoot, a colloquial term for umbrella, probably coined in the 19th century as a portmanteau of the words umbrella and parachute. Since 1971, Bumbershoot has drawn artists representing the best in music, film, comedy, spoken word, dance, theatre, performance, and visual arts to Seattle Center every Labor Day weekend! There’s the standard large line-up of musical acts performing on multiple stages over American Labor Day holiday weekend, but the festival also highlights stand-up comedians, literature, theater, film, visual arts, history, pop culture, and so much more-all with a focus on Seattle and the Pacific Northwest whenever possible. REGATA STORICA september 06

Venice Italy

This unique sport has been practised in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years and today it is particularly well-known for the spectacular historical water pageant that precedes the race. The ancient tradition of the Historical Regatta can be probably traced back to the mid 13th century when the Serenisssima Republic needed to keep well trained the crews of its huge navy in the art of rowing. Nowadays there are four races split by age group and type of boat: ‘Campionissimi su gondoloni’ is the most renowned and exciting race, where gondoloni boats speed down the Grand Canal to the finishing line at the ‘machina’, a VIP floating grandstand located in front of Ca’ Foscari Palace. The most popular race is that of the gondolini regatta, where two oarsmen per gondola race from the spagheto, or starting line, against dozens of other competitors to the finish line, or machina.
