Medical & Health Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor Program (CASAC) Hostos Community College’s Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development is an OASAS Certified Education and Training Provider. This program provides a series of courses that meets the full 350 clock hour requirement defined in Part 853 (Credentialing of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors) Regulations. All course work/training offered in the CASAC 350-Hour Certificate Program has been approved by OASAS to satisfy the requirements for CASAC initial credentialing and/or renewal. Requirements: Must have a minimum of a High School or GED diploma.

HOSTOS CURRICULUM The following new curriculum is designed to meet the State’s new criteria and will provide the applicant with the required 350 hours of “Education and Training.” Upon successful completion of this training, the student will be awarded the Hostos Community College’s Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate. This Certification indicates that the student has completed the education and training requirements. The student is then referred to as being “CASAC eligible,” requiring only the necessary experience to sit for the examination.

Alcoholism: A Primary Disease Study the etiology of alcoholism, alcohol dependence and modern screening methods. Evaluate methods of treatment, compare and contrast mental status exams and psychosocial reports. 35 hours. M & W 6:00pm to 9:30pm 10/12-11/14/11 CE2051-F01 35 hrs. 10 sessions $399

Introduction to Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and the CASAC Program This course provides a comprehensive overview of the CASAC program. Topics will include effects of substance abuse, concepts of ethics, morality and responsible professional behavior. 35 hours. Sat 10:00am to 3:00pm 10/29-12/17/11 CE2052-F01 35 hrs. 7 sessions $399

Special Populations and Relapse Prevention This course considers whether chronic relapsers are indeed a special population of substance abusers and if a special treatment plan needs to be formulated for them. 35 hours.

Medical, Biological, Physiological & Pharmacological Aspects of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism Investigate the physical effects of alcoholism and substance abuse on the human body including fetal alcohol effect, STD and HIV. 35 hours. The MICA Patient This course covers the treatment of substance abuse, alcoholism and mental illness of the Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted (MICA) patient. 35 hours. T & Th 6:00pm to 9:30pm 12/6-1/5/12 CE2055-F01 35 hrs. 10 sessions $399

Ethics and Professionalism in the Therapeutic Relationship Learn about the ethics, moralities and boundaries that are interwoven into the professional treatment of alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse. The importance of maintaining a professional relationship will be emphasized. 35 hours. M & W 6:00pm to 9:30pm 12/26-1/30/12 CE2056-F01 35 hrs. 10 sessions $399
