I am delighted to dedicate the December issue of Hospitality Lexis to Indian Hotels Company Limited, which is turning 115 years young this December. A group which is built on the legacy. Their ethics and values are reflected in their services. My personal experience with Taj is very astonishing. Every time one visits their property, a phenomenal level of hospitality is experienced. Atithi Devo Bhava is clearly visible in their actions. Experience with London's Taj and Taj exotica resort & Spa, Goa is among the best hospitality experience I have ever had.Few of the suites in Taj London are designed in Bollywood look, by famous fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, which illustrates the strong connection of the group with our nation.

s a Tata Company, IHCL, since its inception in 1903, has conducted business in an inclusive and transparent manner. As one of his first actions after taking a charge was to call for a conference for all the general managers including owners and partners as well, to maintain the transparency. Mr.chhatwal believes that each and everyone’s contribution is equally important for the growth and the success of the organization. He is a firm believer in collaboration for the success of any business. The General Manager is the captain of the ship, but he cannot work alone. GM’s has to work along wit the owners, partners andgovernment bodies to make the hospitality experience for the guests unique.The Company focuses on the enhancement of long-term value creation for all stakeholders without compromising on integrity and regulatory compliances. Mr Chhatwal has enormous experience of working with the moguls of hospitality industry across the globe but according to him, Indian hospitality is very unique in itself as The warmth of Indian hospitality is so well-enshrined in

the concept of "Atithi Devo Bhava" taken from Hindu scriptures. It has started finding its place in the world hospitality lexicon and is becoming something of a legend. Frontline people all through IHCL are an embodiment of the same practised, polished and perfected over the decades.

Budget hotels, the future of Indian hospitality Ever since the first Ginger opened in 2004, it has been a growth story. We have a huge opportunity with Ginger, the company’s brand which is now being repositioned in the lean luxe segment. It offers a greater opportunity to increase room rates than the luxury hotels where prices are already high. Today IHCL has 45 hotels under this brand across 32 locations and are expanding with 10 hotels under development. IHCL is going to launch the new Ginger prototype at Panjim in Goa next month. The company is delighted to see a great partner interest in the reinvigorated Ginger brand. We have signed 6 new ginger hotels in this financial year itself.

IHCL, changing the trend of the Indian hospitality industry IHCL is known for setting benchmarks in service quality and product throughout the industry. One of the key aspects of our five-year business strategy, Aspiration 2022, is reimagning our brandscape. The refreshed brandscape will enable IHCL

to expand its portfolio across different customer segments with various brands to address different price points. The brand portfolio will comprise the iconic Taj hotels which will continue to operate in the luxury segment in key gateway cities, Vivanta will be the growth driver for tier 2 and 3 cities and operate as upscale hotels for the sophisticated traveller. Ginger will have a significant presence in the IHCL portfolio and will address the company’s requirement to be present in the lean luxe segment. We have launched a new brand called SeleQtions - a “named” collection of hotels with its unique identity. Expressions will include all the service retail brands like our signature F&B outlets, Khazana the lifestyle retail brand, Jiva- our spa brand and the salons with the view to unlock equity of these brands. Taj SATS is the market leader in airline catering providing in-flight catering at key cities.

IHCL, Widening up its arena. IHCL has signed 15 new hotels, including three Taj hotels, five Vivanta hotels, one SeleQtion and six Ginger hotels in this financial year. This includes a Vivanta at Heathrow in London, a Taj hotel in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, a Taj hotel at the Deira Creek in Dubai and a Vivanta in Kathmandu, Nepal. The company is further poised to open Taj Aravalli Resort & Spa in Udaipur, Taj Rishikesh Resort & Spa in Rishikesh; Taj Theog Resort & Spa In Theog; Vivanta in Katra and the new prototype Ginger at Panaji in Goa. The opening of the Taj Jumeirah Lake Towers and Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, The Palm in Dubai are also scheduled over the next 6 to 12 months. Safer and better place of Female staff

IHCL recently announced two new programs in line with its commitment to promoting equal opportunities for women. The first is an incentive program for referring women candidates. The second is a policy announcement to reimburse expenses for family expansion and overall health treatments which cover various medical procedures including IVF treatments. IHCL also appointed its first woman CEO for Roots Corporation Ltd. (Ginger Hotels).

Benefits IHCL give to their women workforce Maternity Leave All Lady Associates are entitled to 7 months of paid maternity leave, which is above the statutory limit. Hospitalization Policy In addition to the current benefits under the policy, we have extended the reimbursement of expenses for Family Expansion and overall health treatments which now also covers IVF treatments. Day Care The Day Care Policy enables associates with child-care responsibilities to provide a safe and secure environment for their children for the duration that they are at work by providing on-site, best in class daycare facilities at hotels managed by professionals. Late Night Drops Associates working in late evening shifts are provided with home drops along with a security personnel. Adoption Leave To assist lady associates who wish to adopt a child. A number of days are based on the age of the child varying from 6 months for a child less than one year to 2 months for a child more than 2 years of age. Sabbatical Policy While this is not gendered specific, a Sabbatical Leave is granted during the career of any permanent association of the IHCL for a variety of reasons to manage their personal & professional priorities and commitments. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

Journey of Taj started after Jamsetji, Man of vision and Dream vowed to build a luxury hotel that would be open to Indians and where Indians could entertain and be entertained without being insulted. Jamsetji is known for his commitment towards the society and always been remembered as the legendary Father Indian Industry as well as the Founder of the Modern India.

He was a business man, but he always served the society and the needy. Jamsetji Tata had four major targets during his lifetime. To set up an Iron and Steel Company, hydro electricity plant, World class learning institutions and a Grand, Luxurious Hotel. In his life, he only witnessed the inauguration of the TajMahal Hotel in Colaba on 3 December 1903. From this point, the fine journey of one of the major giant in hospitality sector started. Though the journey was not so smooth but Taj managed it all and came up like a Roaring lion. Jamsetji had very true and pure vision behind the setting up of the Taj. He wanted to serve and provide the guests and visitors, full luxury with proper hygiene. At that time, there were no luxury hotels in India, and very few in Asia. J R D Tata took over as chairman after the sad demise of Jamsetji Tata in May 1904.

True professionalism

In 1973, Taj’s one of the biggest rivalry came into the existence that is Oberoi Towers. With the advertisements saying “Taj welcomes its friend to share the fortunes of this great city”.Taj proves that he is solely dedicated to its commitment towards luxury and service and not focused on copying what the rest of the world is doing.

“A leading British run hotel, the Majestic did not allow Indians inside. Jamsetji had taken one of his foreign guests to the hotel but was denied entry and had to go somewhere else to eat. This prompted the rise of the opulence that we know as the Taj Mahal Hotel.” 18

Story

First Ever First Hotel of India to avail Electricity and to install and operate steam elevators. First Indian hotel to import American Fans, German Elevators, Turkish Baths and English Butlers. In 1972, Country’s first 24-hour coffee shop was opened in this hotel. India got it’s first discotheque, called Blow Up in this hotel. Taj was the first hotel to have a licensed bar, and it was also the first Indian hotel to have an air-conditioned ballroom. Primarily English butlers were hired by Taj and became the first Indian hotel to hire Englishmen as butlers and to have India’s maiden Sichuan restaurant, the Golden Dragon.

Lesser Known facts Commitment towards society is in the blood of TATAs, During World War-1 Taj was turned into a hospital to treat the injured and victims. Jamshetji Tata was the man of vision with a never compromising attitude regarding the quality of the product. Steel used to make Dome of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is same as steel which was used to build the Eiffel Tower in Paris. In it’s initial Forty years the ingredients were sourced from overseas as the hotels kitchen was operated by a series of French chefs. Hotel became accessible for guests from December 16, 1903. At that time they used to charge a princely sum of Rs.10 for single room and Rs.13 for double whereas full board was available for Rs 20.

When Jamshetji Nusserwanji Tata was all set to build the TajMahal Palace Hotel on a 10,000 square yard land he had taken on a 99-year lease from the Bombay Port Trust in 1893, the first ones to object to the proposal of the hotel were his sisters. According to the advice of his family astrologer, Jamshetji Started the Taj with the central dome incomplete, with only the first of the two floors of one wing ready and with electricity and lifts not in working order. Black-Tie Charity Ball In spirit of philanthropy that is the cornerstone of the 150 year TATA philosophy, The Taj Mahal Palace is all set to host a Black-Tie Charity Ball on the eve of its anniversary on 15 December 2018. The gala will bring together the who’s who of the city for a charitable evening coupled with jazz, music and fine food. The highlight of the evening is alive auction consisting of art pieces donated and auctioned by Delhi-based art house, DAG. Complete proceeds of the art auction will be donated to the Taj Public Service Welfare Trust (TPSWT). Founded in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, the objective of the Trust is to extend assistance to victims of terror, natural disasters, members of the armed forces and other services who demonstrate bravery in their line of work, and their family. On this occasion, The Taj Mahal Palace will also be

launching a signature collection of 100 Limited Edition 18-karat gold commemorative timepieces by Nebula. Five of these watches will also be sold as a part of the charity Auction. Contribution towards charity continues till 16th December 2018, with each restaurant in the hotel additionally offering sponsored dinner tables that guests can purchase on the anniversary weekend.
