International Languages Day 2014 Hornsey School for Girls held its annual International Languages Day on Wednesday 30th April. As usual, this was eagerly anticipated by students and staff alike! The day began with the enduringly popular Languages Quiz in Community Time where all students in Years 7-13 listened to teachers who speak a language, other than English, expressing how their language is part of their identity. Students were asked to guess the language and who it was speaking it. 10 languages from all over the world were included and many students approached me around the school afterwards to say how much they had enjoyed taking part in the quiz! Teachers enjoyed the opportunity to speak in their own languages too. Specialities from French, German and Spanish gastronomic traditions were available throughout the day in the school Restaurant and catering staff, students and teachers all spoke in one of Hornsey's taught languages to purchase their food. Menus in French, German and Spanish were on display to provide assistance. The theme of International Languages Day this year was and how this relates to languages. With this in mind Year 8 students took part in activities across the curriculum with French or Spanish. Modern Foreign Languages staff assisted staff from other subjects in the production of resources to support this and the cross-curricular theme provided an exciting dimension to the day's proceedings. We are very proud of our multicultural and multilingual heritage at Hornsey School for Girls and I am sure that International Languages Day is a great way for us to celebrate these. We to thank all students and staff who took part in another successful International Languages Day and thank you for supporting your daughter's language learning.

Peer Mentoring Programme It is that time of year again, when we recruit and train students from Year 9 to take up Peer Mentoring duties in Year 10. The current year 10 Peer mentors have presented a Year 9 Assembly and also provided information and application packs during CoCo time. Peer Mentors are active role models in school and it provides the opportunity for students to promote their own personal development, enhance their educational achievement, promote employable skills. Peer Mentoring activity also contributes to positive attitudes towards diversity, inclusivity, anti bullying, student voice, healthy schools and International links.

The Mentoring and Befriending Foundation supports us at Hornsey School for Girls. This is a long and well established provider which has enjoyed media coverage, as well as local, national and international recognition.
