Meet Miranda
Hi there! My name is Miranda. I will be your tour guide as we walk through your student insurance through Template University.
Together, we will explore each of the core components of your plan. Along the way, I will explain the basics of insurance and important considerations. Don’t worry, I don’t have too many cheesy tour guide jokes!
Your Student Health Insurance Plan

Why Should I Elect the Student Health Insurance Plan?
Access to Care International Students Cost Effective
If you plan to stay on a parent’s insurance, be sure to confirm that your insurance provides coverage for services near campus.
ALL international students are required to elect the Student Health Insurance Plan.
Am I required to have health insurance?
It could be cheaper for you to elect the Student Health Insurance Plan versus staying on your parent’s plan. Make sure you compare the cost!
• Adequate health insurance coverage is required for the following groups of students:
• Domestic undergraduate students enrolled in 12+ credit hours.
• Domestic graduate students enrolled in 9+ credit hours.
• International students enrolled in 1+ credit hours.
• These students will be automatically enrolled in coverage, unless they waive with adequate alternative coverage.
• If you do not have coverage through your parents, a spouse, VA Tricare, or Medicaid, you must enroll in the plan.
The Importance of Preventive Care
The first stop on our tour is the doctor’s office.
The most important factor in living a healthy life is to take a proactive approach. It’s so important to make sure you are visiting your doctor each year for your annual physical.
Preventive screenings are also crucial because they can help detect health conditions before they become a serious concern. Your doctor will help you stay on track with your age- and genderappropriate screenings.
And best of all—it’s free! Your preventive care visits and screenings are 100% covered by your student health plan.
Annual Physical
Your annual visit to the doctor to receive your physical is 100% covered by your health plan.

Where to Go for Care
One of the top ways you can save money on health care expenses is going to the appropriate place to receive care when you need it. If you were to fall and break your arm, the treatment you would receive in an emergency room unit and at an urgent care would be similar but would cost approximately 54% more at the emergency room. Try using the emergency room for true emergencies only to save money on your health care expenses.
Here are a few things to think about when navigating where to go for care:
Telemedicine
Use telemedicine for the timely treatment of acute or common illnesses, or when it is hard to access Primary or Urgent Care.
Common illnesses Chronic illnesses Rural areas Inclement weather
Primary Care Physician
Visit your Primary Care Physician for the timely treatment of acute or chronic illnesses, preventive care, and injuries.
Preventive care Common illness
Urgent Care Physician
Ongoing conditions
Referral to specialist
Visit an urgent care for illnesses and injuries that require immediate attention but are not life-threatening.
Visit an Emergency Room or call 911 for more serious or life-threatening conditions.
Benefit
Most carriers offer the ability to estimate the cost of your care before you go. Check out this video for more tips on where to go for care.
Medical Plan
Medical Plan
What’s the Benefit:
Template University’s student health insurance pays for part or all the medical services you (and your covered family members) receive.
How Does it Work:
You receive an ID card to share with your health care service providers, such as your primary care doctor, that will give them information about whom to bill for the services you receive. If your plan doesn’t cover the claim in full, you will get an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your medical carrier after your visit. This document will tell you how much of the total cost was covered by the medical plan and the portion remaining for you to pay your medical provider(s).
Considerations: Many students automatically waive the student health insurance plan because they think the coverage would be too expensive or not as robust as their other coverage. Be sure to take the following into consideration:
Are you an only child or the last child to leave home? It might be worth it to look at the student plan. If you select the student plan through Template University, your parent may be able to change coverage tiers (employee + family to employee + spouse or employee only) and save money by removing you from their plan!
Estimate your medical expenses for the upcoming year. If you expect to have any surgeries or procedures, having good health insurance coverage is essential to avoiding high medical bills.
If you choose to waive the student plan, be sure to check that your alternate coverage works in the campus area.
Benefit Tip: Wait to receive your Explanation of Benefits from your medical carrier before paying your bill. Still have questions after reviewing your bill? Contact the medical carrier at 123-555-8000.

***Disclaimer: It’s recommended that you use in-network providers to receive care. You may be balance billed if you receive care from an out-of-network provider.

The annual premium is split into two payments assessed on your bursar bill at the beginning of fall and spring semesters.
Benefit Tip: What’s a deductible? As a health care consumer, you pay the full cost of medical services before a health plan begins to pay towards the cost of your care. Once you’ve met the deductible, your plan will begin to pick up some or all the cost. Check out the video below for a video with more terms to know or review the glossary on the next page!
Health Insurance 101
Health insurance can be really confusing, but it doesn’t have to be! Use the below glossary of terms to help you brush up on your insurance knowledge.
Deductible
The amount you owe for health care services each year before the insurance company begins to pay.
Out-of-Pocket Max
The maximum amount you have to pay for your health care during a year, excluding the premium. After you reach the out-of-pocket maximum (OOPM), your insurance begins to pay 100% of the allowed amount for covered health care services for the rest of the year.
Coinsurance
Your share of the costs of a covered health care service; calculated as a percent of the allowed amount for the service.
Copay
A fixed amount you pay for a covered health care service. The amount can vary by the type of service (e.g., primary care versus specialist).
Balance
Billing
When a provider bills you for the difference between the provider’s charge and the allowed amount by the insurance company. This can occur when you see providers or seek services out-of-network.
Provider
A doctor, hospital, facility, or pharmacy providing services.
Premium
The amount you pay for your health insurance. This charge is assessed twice per year on your tuition bill. Still have questions or not sure what something means? Find a full glossary of health insurance terms on HealthCare.gov!

Consideration
s:
Many health insurance plans, including Template University’s student plan, offer telemedicine benefits for behavioral health visits. Due to an increase in demand, wait times to see a provider at Student Counseling Service, may be longer than usual. Telemedicine is a way to see a provider sooner.
