Hopi Nonprofit Community News “Making A Difference In Service To Our Communities”

March 2018

Announcing Arizona Gives Day Kykotsmovi, AZ—On April 3rd, Arizona Gives Day will host a statewide online giving campaign to raise awareness and funds for nonprofit organizations that benefit Arizona’s communities. This will be the 7th year that our local Hopi nonprofits have competed with other nonprofits statewide for prizes and a media spotlight to raise awareness of their organizations. The Hopi people, culture, and history are an essential part of Arizona. The Hopi people have demonstrated annually that having a strong tradition of giving can make a difference for nonprofits in helping to raise thousands of dollars each year. For 2018, the goal of the Hopi Nonprofit Partners is to raise a collective $115,000 to support direct services such as creating secure homes and a vibrant Hopi and Tewa culture, providing greater educational opportunities and a stronger support systems for elders and youth, and investing in a healthy future for our community.

“The Hopi people have demonstrated that having a strong tradition of giving can make a difference...” In this issue, Hopi nonprofit partners want to share with the Hopi people what inspires their service to the community. “The Hopi Tribe’s ability to respond to their housing, education, and other social services needs is worsening as a result of the pending Navajo Generating Station and the Peabody Coal Mine closures. Hopi nonprofits are attempting to fill the gap between the needs of the

community and what the government provides. Working together, we are able to leverage each other’s strengths, share experience, and stretch our limited resources. We are hoping that through our AZ Gives Day partnership we can attract the attention and support of the Arizona residents who have historically benefited from affordable electricity provided by coal and will soon benefit from the cleaner air than comes from the NGS closure.” - Mark Hall, Executive Director, Red Feather Development Group. “The Hopi Education Endowment Fund (HEEF) believes there is great strength in the Hopi nonprofit community as these organizations work to address the needs of the Hopi People that typical governmental agencies are Page 1

unable to address. Recognizing that the Hopi nonprofit community is important to our future, the HEEF hopes to share their experience, skills and resources with success on Arizona Gives Day 2018.” - LuAnn Leonard, “The Hopi nonprofit sector has grown significantly since its first established in the 1950’s. Today, with over 15 incorporated nonprofits on Hopi, nonprofits have helping to address the broad needs of the community. Our community’s challenges cannot simply be addressed through government services alone. Our economy depends on all of us making an effort to work together for the benefit of all.” - Monica Nuvamsa,
