MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH! WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH? Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. If you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including: - Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry - Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse . - Family history of mental health problems

COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS Eating or sleeping too much or too little Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, Low or no energy on edge, angry, upset, worried, scared Feeling numb or like nothing matters Mood swings Unexplained aches and pains Thinking of harming yourself or others Low interests on any pleasurable things Inability to perform daily tasks DEBUNKING MYTHS ON MENTAL HEALTH Myth: Mental health conditions are uncommon. Fact: Mental health problems are very common. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Myth: You're just sad, not depressed Fact: There is a difference between depression and sadness. Sadness is a regular part of life that everyone experiences at some point and it passes over time. Depression can make it continuously difficult for a person to handle his or her everyday responsibilities. Depression is not something a person can will away. Myth: Mental illness is caused by personal weakness Fact: Mental health is not the fault of the person. It is caused by a combination of environmental and biological factors, and not a result of personal weakness. Myth: You can never get better from a mental illness. Fact: Mental health issues are not always lifelong disorders. While all symptoms may not be alleviated easily or at all, with the right recovery plan, people can live the productive and healthy lives they have always imagined. Know that treatment is available. There is help.
