Pets are part of the family. They provide many benefits in an individual’s overall wellbeing. They can also help people live healthier lives. CDC’s One Health approach and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Veterinary Public Health's (LAC DPH VPH) Healthy Pets, Healthy Families initiative highlight the link between human health, animal health, and the environment. Some focus areas that relate human and animal health are discussed below. Obesity Prevention Just like people, major causes of obesity in pets include lack of exercise and improper diet (when food is left out all day for them to feed). Obesity in both people and pets can put them at risk of, but not limited to, diabetes, heart dieases, or arthritis. About 50% of dogs and cats in the US are overweight or obese and not all pet owners can recognize if their pet is overweight. If you cannot feel your pets ribs, it's time to feed less.
