HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 1935 - 1959: The Philippine Constitution instated that the national language was Pilipino, which was mainly based on the Tagalog language. This took place under the leadership of President Manual L. Quezon. He is also known as the Father of Philippine National Language. 1973 - The National Language was changed to Filipino as a way to incorporate other languages spoken in the country 1946 - 1954: President Sergio Osmena declared the week-long celebration of the National Language (Linggo ng Wika) from March 27th through April 2nd 1955: President Ramon Magsaysay moved the dates to August 13th through 19th to ensure that the celebration happens during the school year for students to learn and celebrate. August 19th is also the birthday of President Quezon, the Father of Philippine National Language 1988 - President Corazon Aquino signed the Proclamation 19 to ratify the week-long celebration of the language on August 13-19 1997 - President Fidel V. Ramos signed the Proclamation 1041 to declare that August is the national language month, extending the celebration from a week-long to a month-long celebration.
