This single-story modern single-family house made from massive wood is located at the foot of Mount Fuji, approximately 120 kilometres from Tokyo, Japan. The windows of the home reach all the way from the floor to the ceiling, and they offer views towards the mountain and the beautiful nature. The height of the rooms reaches six metres in places. The house is designed by the famous Japanese architect Edward Suzuki according to the wishes of the family. Among the unique solutions in the house is the spacious bathroom section, which combines elements of both Finnish and Japanese tradition: It includes a sauna and a jacuzzi, from which the family can gaze at their beautiful garden and Mount Fuji. In 2006, the house was chosen as the best imported house in Japan in the esteemed Import House of the Year competition.
Home from a renewable natural resource Wood is a renewable natural resource. As the tree grows, it binds carbon dioxide which is then stored in the walls of a Honka massive wood house for centuries. At the same time, a new forest absorbs even more carbon, which enables the future generations to enjoy fresh air. Wood construction is a natural and ecologically sound choice. It is a true ecological act in the battle against global warming.

A gentle slope ends to sand dunes. The demanding plot dictated the house form to the architect. Light walls are a contrast to the dark beams. Stone chimney and terrace beams complete the style. The peaceful interior design with clear colour choices repeat the façade. All beams are genuine massive wood with wenge finishing. The sand dunes are present in the interior design throughout the house. The stairs to the first floor are delicate though they are hammered out of steel. First floor repeats the same style but with softer tones. Linen, toned wood and hammered steel are present in the entire house.

Energy-efficient Honka homes In order for a home to be energy-efficient, its structures need to be airtight to prevent uncontrolled air and heat leaks. The airtightness of Honka homes implemented with the HonkaTech™ solutions have been measured to be approx. 25% better than the airtightness of the average Finnish one-family house, and approx. 50% better than the airtightness of the average log house. In practice, this means savings of ca. 20% in heating energy when comparing a Honka home to the average Finnish log house.

Among the largest - and most striking - of the private houses that Honka has delivered is ex-football player Steve Young’s stunning holiday home in Park City, Utah, United States. The massive log walls of the building have been creatively designed by the architect to fill a number of purposes. The vivid 1,500-square-metre building was designed by American architect Mike Upwall in co-operation with the design office RI-Konsultit in Finland. A great number of hours were spent on designing and building Mr. Young’s home at Honka factories and on-site in Utah. In quintessential American fashion, the rooms are enormous - even the pantry is 60 square metres in size, and there is an indoor slide for children, a ballet studio and a full-size home theatre. Of course, the house also features a Finnish sauna, with king-size benches that are unique in design, as are all the windows and extra-high doors of the building. The architect created the many fabulous details that are visible in the columns and lattice windows. The ornaments were carefully manufactured at Honkarakenne factories.

A part of sustainable development In Finland, there are significantly more natural forests growing than there are those that are cut down. Honka is committed to the certification of Finnish forests and to sustainable forest economy – wood is not bought from areas that are a part of a conservation programme. Only carefully selected good-quality pine and spruce is used as raw material for Honka log houses.

Myrskylyhty is a luxurious villa made from laminated round logs. Myrskylyhty stands on the sea shore, surrounded by a Finnish forest . The tower makes the house look like a small castle, which it is to its owners. There are balconies to each cardinal point and lots of terrace. Their own wine cellar gives the house one more speciality. There is also a sauna on the shore. The seaside sauna has a terrace indoors with large windows opening to the water front. What an excellent place to spend the cool autumn nights.

Scientifically healthy home Natural wood has the ability to absorb moisture from the inside air. The wall then releases this moisture back into the inside air, as the air dries. The results of an extensive European scientific study show that log walls have an exceptional ability to balance the moisture changes in the inside air, equating to aproximately 60-75% better than moisture changes in stone walls. According to the study, the more massive wood there is within the inside walls of a house, the more balanced and the more optimized the inside air will remain, providing a better air quality for good health.

The dark grey Fregatti fits beautifully in its seaside surroundings. It was built as a vacation home from Honka’s strong 204mm massive logs to Western Finland. The house has a floor area of 100m², and it was designed by Carl Johan Mether. The house, with its clearly defined floor design and efficient use of space, is a magnificent place to spend time year-round. In addition to the living room and the open kitchen, Honka Fregatti has three rooms, one of which is used as a peaceful study and a library, and the two others as bedrooms. The house has an indoor sauna and a combined bathroom and utility room. The residents can heat the sauna remotely with an SMS when they are leaving the city for their vacation home. A long kitchen island with a lot of space adds to the functionality of the modern open kitchen. The large patio in front of the house has a direct view of the sea and it reaches all the way out to the private pier.
Log Houses and Noise Wood absorbs low, medium and high sounds evenly and dampens them. Therefore, the interiors of many concert halls and sound studios are made of wood. As an acoustic element, wood provides a Honka home with a soft and soothing sound environment.

A clearly defined architecture and large panoramic windows suit Airiston Portti well as it stands proudly on the shore rocks of South-Western Finland. The main house has a floor area of 148m². This warm-featured vacation home originally designed by the architect Ulla Reunanen blends as well into the Finnish seaside as into an Alpine panorama. All three buildings of the Airiston Portti were designed for year-round use. Beside the main villa stand a sauna and a guest cabin. The space created by the kitchen, dining area and living room offers an uninterrupted view of the sea. The bedrooms are placed in peaceful seclusion in the coolest part of the house. This vacation house has two patios to enjoy both the morning and the evening sun. Airiston Portti is heated with ground heating derived from the shore rock. Underfloor heating provides a comforting warmth underfoot during the cold seasons. There is also an air source heat pump in the main building. Airiston Portti was chosen as the best house of the exhibition in the Finnish Holiday Housing fair in 2005.
Honka homes are fireproof Massive wood is a fireproof material, and it can endure fire even better than concrete or steel pillars. Wood contains approx. 15% of water, which evaporates before actual burning. Moreover, charring protects the core of the wood. In a fire, a massive wood house will char, but it will not collapse in the same way as light-structured or steel-structured houses.

Building a log house In addition to its log frame, other structural parts of the Honka houses also have polished details, and are highly pre-manufactured. For example, the architraves of doors and windows as well as the parts of railings are pre-manufactured. This helps the installation and makes it faster, which in turn creates cost savings during building.

A high standard of living is immediately visible from the outside at Villa M채ntyranta. Here, logs have been skillfully joined to a magnificent stone foundation and to large windows. The house that is located in Eastern Finland fits its pine forest surroundings well with its traditional dark stained walls. The impressive house exudes style both on the outside and on the inside. The house is surrounded by a patio, from which a beautiful lake panorama can be enjoyed. A modern kitchen and living room are located on the ground floor and provide an easy flow of living space. A golf course and a ski slope are located nearby. In the summertime, the clear lake can be used for swimming and fishing, and during the winter it can be skied or even skated on.
Ecological choice Wood is undeniably the most ecological as a building material. First of all, wood is a renewable natural resource. A Honka log home lands the carbon in the logs for many centuries. In addition, log production uses less energy than the production of other building materials. The energy consumption of the industrial production of massive wood is only approximately 50% of the energy required by cement production, and approximately 20% of the energy required by brick production.

S k a z k a
Skazka is set in the middle of a forest, like a house straight out of a Russian folktale. Its stone-covered base and many layered façade made from round logs, different-sized windows, and its sharp and high roof angles create a combination which is at the same time remarkable and harmonious. This round log house was designed as a summer home for the family, but it has become a meeting place for their relatives, as well. The house is an example of the round log architecture in the traditional Russian style. No effort has been spared in the finishing touches of this house. A hand-painted ceiling creates a fairy-tale atmosphere in the bedroom of the daughter.
Hundreds of years of traditional knowledge There are several log buildings hundreds of years old in Northern Europe. They include churches, parsonages, manor houses and private farm houses. Of the Finnish log buildings built in the 18th century, the Svartå Manor and the Petäjävesi church have been added to the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites, as is the unique log church ensemble in Kizhi in Russian Karelia. The secrets behind the durability of the houses include the strong traditional knowledge in handling wood and the moisture breathing of logs.

Energy-saving and safe Honka vacation home All HonkaTech™ structure solutions are moisturesafe, according to studies. You can leave your Honka vacation home (chalet) safely on low heating when you are not using it. According to studies, a vacation home implemented with HonkaTech™ solutions has a safe moisture operation. Layered light structures have more moisture risks than Honka massive wood structures. If the vacation home is used with normal heating every other weekend during the winter, and the temperature is lowered to +5°C otherwise, heating energy savings of approx. 40% are gained compared to a vacation home kept ”fully warm” throughout the year.

Villa Matilda is located in the middle of nature, on top of a large hill, among the peaceful countryside. Behind the house is a pristine forest, which is enjoyed by the outdoor-loving family. The post box is 350m away and the closest neighbour is 100 meters away, but the largest airport in Finland can be reached within 13 minutes by car. The architecture of the house emphasizes coziness and functionality. The log building has simple lines and blends well into the surrounding traditional Finnish landscape well. The interior of the house is modern and simplified. The moderate interior is done in light colors, as requested by the family. The house is built from Honka Fusion™ massive wood logs, but also incorporates other materials, such as stone and glass. The log walls of the bedrooms were left in their natural form, as desired by the family. This was also the best solution for the quality of the inside air. The floor area of 276 square meters has been functionally divided into two parts. There is a spacious living area on the ground floor, where the combined kitchen and dining room, maintenance room and guest bathroom are all located. The bedrooms and a bathroom are also located on the ground floor. The living room is open all the way to the first floor, and offers views over the trees and fields. The luxurious bathing and sauna area is located on the first floor. The sauna area is equipped with a jacuzzi, and has access to the outside terrace that opens up to the evening sun. The library on the first floor provides a tranquil haven for members of the family and their guests in which to relax – either reading or listening to music, for example. The surrounding nature is always nearby in this relaxed way of living. The inside and outside spaces are beautifully interconnected through the large windows. The lounging terrace surrounds the house on two sides. A light colour, with a hint of rose, was chosen for the facades of the house. Underfloor heating was chosen as the heating system, and a geothermal heat pump saves energy. A heat storing fireplace provides extra warmth to the house.

Silent atmosphere The natural massive wood breathes. It keeps the inside air quality and humidity in the house optimal for improved health. A breathing house means that the natural massive wood has the ability to absorb moisture from the inside air, which it then releases after the inside air has dried out. According to recent studies, the more massive wood there is within the inside walls of a house, the more the inside air humidity remains balanced and optimised for good health. Even though Villa Matilda breathes, its walls are very tight and, therefore, energy-efficient. An automatic ventilation system takes care of the ventilation. The quality of life for this family and their children is increased not only by the pleasant inside air, but also the tranquility and silence experienced in the house. The restaurant and café Huili is located in Järvenpää, Finland, near the headquarters of Honkarakenne, on the shore of the Tuusulanjärvi lake. In these same landscapes, many famous Finnish cultural people of the early 20th century lived: Composer Jean Sibelius, poet Eino Leino and painter Pekka Halonen, whose homes were built from logs according to their wishes.

he restaurant entrepreneur Jari Sirén and Honkarakenne won the competition organized by the town of Järvenpää with their mutual design idea. The spacious building filled with natural light was designed by Architect Milla Hannonen from Honka Fusion™ laminated logs in close cooperation with the entrepreneur. The shape, direction and views of the building were decided upon according to the beautiful lake landscape. One of the restaurant walls is entirely covered in windows. Through these windows, a panorama opens up to the shore park and lake. The facade facing the town centre and street, is blank. The functional areas of the restaurant are divided into three parts: the Entrance at the East end, the Kitchen and the Sauna area. Between these three areas is the restaurant hall, an open and uniting zone. The customers can step onto the patio directly from the hall. The spa-like ambience of the sauna section is increased by the two outside bathing tubs under a roof, one of which is on a high roof platform. In the steaming hot water, bathers can view the beautiful lake from high up.
The restaurant and café offers versatile catering facilities, and is located in the middle of a popular outdoor route, which makes it a good stopping place during all the seasons. The outside patios can seat 300 customers during the summer. The outside fireplace under a roof gives the patio a pleasant atmosphere year-round. Music has a full timbre in the restaurant hall, indeed performers of classical music here, have praised the acoustics . The heavy massive wood building has a dark gray tone on the outside. Natural colours were chosen for the interior and the lightcoloured decoration is complemented with lamps by Finnish Secto Design. The ceilings are made from white lacquered birch plywood. n the beginning of 21st century Honka started to build its biggest project of all times to Sotchi, Russia. Sochi is a resort city in Krasnodar Krai and it lies on the southern border of Russia, by the Black Sea. In the background of the city are the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sotchi in the neighbourhood of this magnificent place. This complex building with its twenty houses around it was a massive operation even to the world’s largest log house manufacturer, Honka. The site situated in the middle of mountains with lots of snow and in an area that was hard to reach. The area is also known for earth quakes. So these circumstances were taken into account. The main building is 4500m² which is the largest building in the world made out of logs. It was designed to function as a high level conference meeting place for 20-30 eminent guests and to fulfill all the special wishes of the customer. The main building also includes four luxurious suites of 150 m² and a inside swimming pool. Around the main building was built twenty datšas (houses) for extra accommodation purposes. Each of them was 200-300m² and designed with individual interiors.
Warm wall - warm home Massive log has the natural ability to store heat and release it into the inside air when required. A massive wood log structure is better than light structure walls in that it utilizes the free energy from the sun especially in the spring and autumn, when the sun’s heat energy is stored in the log walls. The wall releases the heat slowly into the inside air during the night, and creates significant savings in heating.

An Alpine haven for skiing and hiking!

here is a charming small Alpine hotel in the village of Haute-Nendaz in the Valais area of the Swiss Alps. It is a chalet hotel that was designed by the architect Jean-Michel Martignoni and his wife, and was built in 2004. The building follows the traditional Alpine style of building, and has a floor area of 270m² in three storeys. It can be rented by the skiing and hiking tourists arriving in the area. The plot is partly on the side of a hill, so the accommodation is split across the three levels. The basement has the sauna area, maintenance room and garage. The main entrance is situated on the ground floor, which also has a hall, an open kitchen, a dining room, living room, one bedroom, and toilet. The top floor has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a loft. The Swiss Alpine chalet is located in a very sunny place and with the combination of stone, glass and logs creates a natural ”heating system”. The wood stores the sun’s heat and releases it into the rooms. Heat also radiates inside through the panoramic windows. The builder of the house, the architect Martignoni, holds contact with nature dear. As an architect, nature and the beauty of natural surroundings are very close to Martignoni’s heart and log buildings fulfil that passion with their genuine solid log walls, providing a tangible contact with nature and enabling a harmonious way of living. Light is important, and due to the large window surfaces, the warmth of the sun can be utilised to its full extent to heat the house. The rest of the heating is managed through ground heating.

he restaurant building is one of the largest public buildings made from Honka logs in Russia. Its floor area is 1550m², and it is located in the Yaroslavl area, 350km from Moscow. The huge wooden building on the bank of the Volga River has the outward appearance of a Russian manor. All the main rooms are located on the Volga side of the building. The large panoramic windows of the banquet hall on the ground floor offer stunning views of the surrounding area. The layout of the restaurant is dictated by the functions required in each room. For example the ground floor has an banquet hall that seats 110 people, a dance floor and a VIP area, while the first floor has small restaurant rooms, a smoking room and a film theatre. For those people who long for an intellectual pastime, the building has a library with Russian classics among its selection. The building is like a riverboat with its panoramic windows, and the patio surrounding the ground floor has an air of the outer decks of a boat. Due to its large windows, the building turns into a shining beacon in the evenings. The interior has light colours on its ceilings and walls, which also have hand-painted decorations. The furniture is similar to that of the 18th and 19th centuries, the carpets and hand-woven tapestries are aged to suit the general style of the décor, and the whole affect is pleasently completed with English paintings in golden frames. he Westerwald tourist centre is located in the small village of Stahlhofen, in Central Germany. The area is part of Westerwald’s low mountain area, which is a popular tourist destination due to its many hiking routes, among other things. The artificial lake Wiesensee, dammed up in 1971, is also located near the area. In the left-hand section of the multidimensional building, there is a tourist centre, and in the right wing, a kiosk. Honka sales office and Café Seewies can be found in the middle. The café and the tourist centre are the starting and endpoints of many outdoor routes, which start right from the corner of the building.

The CE mark can be attached to a product, whose features and functionality comply with the requirements of a product standard or technical product approval. he forested and mountainous lake area of Borovoye in Northern Kazakhstan is unique with its flora, fauna and climate in a country otherwise covered by plains. A large part of the area is protected, and building is only allowed for vacation and recreational purposes. The area of the Borovoye, ”Finnish Village” covers 54 hectares and is situated near the naturally beautiful Borovoye Lake. Genuine and natural but high-quality and highclass recreational homes were required for the Borovoye area. Honka was chosen as a partner after a half-year process including a search for alternatives, deliberation and competitive bidding. The selection criteria included the widespread reputation and reliability of the brand, the sufficient production capacity for a large single delivery, and the fast and professional service. The Project Managers remain delighted with their choice of using Honka, which as a company maintains support to the client, after delivery of the houses, to assist in any way with the marketing and building processes, for example. The area has 250 plots for recreational houses. The plot sizes are 1,200-2,000m². The first stage of the project included 100 houses as well as a cultural and recreational centre, all made from Honka laminated logs. There are four house models with floor areas of 120-400m². The architectural planning was made in Finland. The cultural and recreational centre has all the services required by vacationers, such as a restaurant, cafeteria, bars, store, beauty parlour, and inside and outside pools. The area has 14 recreational houses and a luxurious club building. The houses are situated to give each home a magnificent view of the surrounding nature. The Kamogawa River runs on the western side of the area, and can be used for fishing. The houses were originally designed for the nearby hotel for rental use, but due to customer feedback were in turn sold to private customers as all-included packages. Due to their equipment, the houses can be used both as holiday homes and residential homes. All the houses have practical lofts and high ceilings. In addition, some of the houses have Jacuzzis on their terrace. The area also has a hot spring spa, ”onsen” in Japanese, which can be used by vacationers, along with a restaurant and a reception building that is open 24 hours a day. The house maintenance services are arranged so that the residents can concentrate on enjoying their holiday.

Honka is over 50 years old Honka was founded in 1958 in Lieksa, Eastern Finland, when five Saarelainen brothers became interested in building log houses. The innovative brothers, who had a strong desire to succeed, developed the world’s first round log cutting machine from a Zetor engine. The tradition of wood construction, which was thousands of years old, had taken a giant step forward. Industrial log house manufacturing had begun. In the next 30 years, Honkarakenne grew by leaps and bounds, first securing its position as the market leader in the Finnish log house industry and later in the whole world. Exporting started at the beginning of the 1970s, when the company conquered Japan.

High-quality massive wood house lasts from generation to generation. There are several log buildings which are hundreds of years old in Northern Europe. They include public buildings, churches, parsonages, manor houses and simple farm houses. Mustio Manor and Petäjävesi Old Church are examples of Finnish log buildings from the 18th century. The latter, like the unique log church complex of Kizh in Russian Karelia, are listed among the Unesco World Heritage locations. Ecologically durable Renewable natural wood is an ecologically benign choice of construction material – an ecological choice in the battle against climate change. As trees grow, they store carbon dioxide, which is stored in the walls of the massive wood house for centuries. Ecological – a choice that will benefit generations to come The lifespan of massive wood houses is very long and a wooden building may last for hundreds of years if it has been designed and built correctly to protect against the strain of humidity and weather conditions. The energy consumption of the industrial production of massive wood is only approximately 50% of the energy required for cement production and 20% of the energy required for brick production. Honka has planned the manufacturing process of log carefully to create as little residue as possible. Some wood residue will be reused in by-products, the rest to create heat energy.
A part of sustainable development In Finland, the natural growth of forests far exceeds the amounts cut down. Honka is committed to certifying Finnish forests and maintaining a sustainable forest economy; no wood is purchased from areas covered by protection programmes. New forest is planted in areas that have been cut down. Only carefully selected good-quality pine and spruce is used as raw material for Honka log houses. Our wood purchasing area is the most ideal growth area for highquality wood. Our Finnish factories are also located in the same area. This way, wood transportation distances remain short, and the environmental load remains small.

Quality Assurance
Modern technology protecting the home
The quality assurance of Honka house production starts in design. All the local building regulations, as well as factors creating durable massive wood buildings, structural weather protection, energy efficiency economy and a long lifetime are taken into consideration in the design. The quality assurance in production begins with the sorting of wood raw material and ends with the packaging of log stacks. Each production stage has its own quality criteria. Important quality stages include the drying of the wood raw material and the gluing of the laminated logs, which are both monitored carefully during quality assurance. The drying process is optimised to achieve a steady quality of end product. The strength of the glue is studied using a de-lamination test, which is estimated to correspond to a weather stress of ca. 40 years. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland controls and audits the quality assurance at Honka as an independent body.
Honka uses the latest manufacturing technology, which it has developed continuously throughout its existence. The production of round and log timber parts is largely automatic. House parts are machined ready for installation in a computer-assisted process. The automatic process makes the measurements exact, meaning that the logs and timber parts are quick to install on site and building is effortless.
CE marking The CE marking is a valid authority marking in the European Union. It can be attached to a product, whose features and functionality comply with the requirements of a product standard or technical product approval. Honkarakenne Oyj was the first wood house manufacturer in Europe to receive the ETA approval (European Technical Approval) that entitles it to mark its houses with the CE-marking in 2004. At the beginning of 2008, Honka received ETA approval for the glued laminated beams and is now allowed to use the CE marking in them.
Product development Changes in the space required for housing, the climate, legislation and other building materials require long-term product development. Honka has its own product development unit, which concentrates on model range development and on improving the technical qualities of the product in cooperation with the leading research institutions both in Finland and globally. The key research areas at Honka include the health effects, energy solutions and manufacturing techniques of massive wood houses. The most significant results from product development are protected by patents and design protections.

An essential part of the energy efficiency of Honka massive wood homes is the tightness of the log walls and structures, which is achieved with patented methods. When this is combined with design expertise, advanced manufacturing technology as well as precise quality assurance and skilful construction work, Honka log house is twice as air tight and energy efficient as an average log house. If necessary, wood fibre, which works well with wood, will be used as an additional insulation material. Honka massive wood houses comply with the local statutory building regulations. A massive wood log structure is better than light wood walls in that it utilises the free energy from the sun especially in the spring and autumn, when the low sun's heat energy is stored in the log walls. The wall releases the heat slowly during the night, cutting heating costs significantly. In the summer, when the sun is higher, the eaves and porch roofs shield the walls from the heat. In a well-designed genuine massive wood house, the coolness of a summer night is stored in the massive wood walls, which then maintain a pleasant inside temperature even on hot days. A log house can be described as the most energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and durable living solution based on experience. A major part of the energy-efficiency of the Honka log houses is due to the tightness of the log walls and structures. A tight, warm, and energysaving genuine log house with pleasant inside air is the result of skilful design, top-quality windows and doors, registered and patented log technology as well as advanced solutions.
Wood has the ability to absorb moisture from the inside air, which it then releases as the inside air dries. The more massive wood there is within the house, the more optimised the inside air humidity remains for good health. A humidity of 30 to 55% minimises the harmful aspects of inside air, such as the growth of mould spores and bacteria. Due to the moisture breathing of wood, breathing is easy in a massive wood home, which makes it an ideal choice for all people suffering from breathing problems, allergies or asthma.
A healthy home that is scientifically proven The results of an extensive European scientific study *show that logs have an exceptional ability to balance the moisture changes in the inside air. In this respect, logs can even be 60 to 75% better than stonewalls. According to the study, the more massive wood there is within the inside walls of a house, the more balanced and optimised the inside air will remain for good health.
