Born during Japanese Occupation, Mrs. Lee has a faded memory of Happy Valley during that time, but remembers she once lived in a walk up building on 1 Shing Ping Street.

The building had 3 storeys with 4 units on each floor, and the main gate was a traditional sliding gate. At the entrance of the building was a water well. Inside each flat there was a private squatting toilet. She recalls that only 1-3 Shing Ping Street had private toilets which were very rare and luxurious back then. Because not many buildings had private toilets, people still relied on "night soil collection" to clear the waste they have collected in buckets!

Mrs. Lee went to Po Kok Girls' School during primary school years, and it was situated at 11 Shan Kwong Road. She said her grades were only average, as she had no one to ask when she came across difficulties. As a result, after 12 years of studying Primary 6, she still failed to advance. She has deep impressions of Tung Lin Kok Yuen, as the school shared the same premise. It was later when Ho Tung made a donation to build the Po Kok School building now. Mrs. Lee recalls that during primary school, there was a weekly Buddhist Studies class, where Buddhist rituals were conducted and students would chant the sutra. Po Kok School is now an international school, with many ethnic minority students. She remembers Tung Lin Ko Yuen to be very solemn and nicely decorated.
