Want to Make a Difference in the World? Think small.

Even though this piece is in the beginning of the issue it is always the finishing touch to each issue. After the planning, getting in ads, assigning articles, editing, completing the layouts, and finally after putting it all together, etc., we breathe a quick sigh of relief that we are going to meet the deadline.

After a few sighs we consider what else we would say to you our readers. It does seem backwards yet it seems to work for us.

So here is our last thought before we go to press: We often use the phrase making a difference in the lives of the pets of Las Vegas. Making a difference sometimes implies huge endeavors – Dreams, Goals and Plans to accomplish so much. As important as those activities are to getting results sometimes it is the small stuff that really makes a difference.

Weird and Wacky Animal Laws Animal laws serve a purpose – they are designed to keep pets and people safe.

Most animal laws make sense; however, some seem weird and wacky like the following: In Zion, Il it is illegal to give lighted cigars to dogs, cats, or any other domesticated animal.

In Tuscaloosa, AL if you’re in a public park you may not give any animal any alcoholic beverage or tobacco.

In Hartford, CT it is illegal to educate a dog.

In Oklahoma people can be fined, arrested or jailed for making ugly faces at a dog.

In Arizona it is illegal for donkeys to sleep in bathtubs.

In Brooklyn, NY, it’s illegal to let a dog sleep in your bathtub. Some sites also mention that it is illegal in NY for donkeys to sleep in bathtubs.

These laws were taken from a variety of websites. We did not verify their origins or their credibility. There was one, however, that seemed completely absurd: In Arizona it is illegal to kill camels. This one seemed to warrant a little more “research”.

Apparently this law was needed to protect the camels that were used as an experiment by the United States Camel Corps in the 1850’s. When they were no longer needed they were either let loose or sold to private citizens.

Interestingly not everything that appears weird and wacky really is weird and wacky!

What is it with bathtubs though? We’re still trying to figure this one out…..

FERAL POWER!

JOIN THE REVOLUTION! Do you love cats? Would you like to make a significant difference in the lives of the feral and homeless cats in our community?

DID YOU KNOW…

… that over 200,000 homeless kittens are born every year in Clark County?

… that 50% of those kittens will not survive more than a few weeks, but will die from malnutrition, heat stroke, injury, dehydration, and many other causes?

… that of the kittens who survive, 90% will not live to see their first birthday?

How can you help to solve this tragic cycle of too many kittens being born into a harsh environment and dying before they even reach adulthood? By joining the Feral Power Revolution and helping the Community Cat Coalition of Clark County (C5) continue to reduce the euthanasia of healthy free-roaming feral and stray cats and humanely reduce the overpopulation issue!

We are a professional and well organized non-profit which has already trapped over 20,000 feral and stray cats and had them spayed or neutered, vaccinated and returned to their colonies. Since we started in 2009, the number of cats euthanized at the Lied Shelter has been reduced by a whopping 50%! But even as we celebrate this remarkable accomplishment, we must increase our trapping by 100 cats per month in order to continue to reduce the euthanasia rate.

C5 is seeking volunteers who are professional, customer service oriented, organized and dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the 200,000 feral and stray cats which live in our communities.

As a volunteer trapper, you control your schedule. We provide the traps and the training on how to use them.

We trap cats at various locations throughout the valley, and we provide facilities and volunteers to care for the cats before and after their surgeries. The trapping must work around your schedule.

Welcome to the

D G PARK Having Fun – Staying Safe

A

trip to the dog park can be an exciting and fun adventure for you and your dog. While your dog will get to play and socialize with other dogs, you will get to meet and visit with fellow dog owners. It can be a social event for you both! You’ll have the opportunity to share information and recite your favorite dog stories while watching your dog run, play, and make new canine friends.

Just like humans, dogs are highly social animals that typically enjoy spending time with their own species. In addition to playtime, a dog park can be a great place for them to practice reading other dogs’ body language and learn what other dogs are trying to communicate. Learning to read a dog’s signal to “play or stay away” will become valuable when you meet other unfamiliar dogs in the future.

While many dogs are good candidates for the dog park, some are not. Like people, our canine friends have different personalities and dispositions. Not all dogs are amiable enough to partake in off-leash park activities. Learning more about dog parks, your dog’s own temperament, and general park etiquette, may help you determine if an off-leash dog park would be a good choice for you and your dog.

Before going to a dog park, it is important to make sure your dog is healthy and physically able to withstand rambunctious play. Equally important, your dog should have all of his vaccinations up to date and have a valid license.

Unfortunately, like any place where animals congregate, contagious diseases and parasites can be present. Puppies under 12 weeks old, or puppies that have not been fully immunized, should never visit a dog park. While you would hope that all the dogs at the park are healthy and properly immunized, they may not be. Keeping your pet’s vaccinations current is the best defense against any possible contagious diseases.

Once you’ve evaluated your dog’s physical ability and vaccination history, you must also consider your dog’s overall temperament. You know your dog better than anyone. Is he sociable? Is he aggressive or extremely protective of you?

Is he overly timid or fearful of other dogs? These are all questions you need to ask yourself. A sociable dog that is typically friendly with others and is obedient to your verbal commands should be well-suited for dog park activities.

Aggressive dogs, for obvious reasons, should never be taken 10

into a dog park. In contrast, those that are very timid or scared around other dogs would probably not enjoy their visit and may be bullied or feel intimidated. In general, if you don’t think your dog would enjoy the park or could be a risk to others, it would be best to find another more suitable activity.

If you determine that your dog is a good candidate for a dog park visit, it will be helpful to know some proper park etiquette before you go. While some of these things may not be official rules of the park, following these guidelines will help ensure a safe and enjoyable time for everyone:

Keep your dog leashed at all times except in the designated “off leash” area.

ALWAYS keep your attention on your dog, keeping your leash in hand. Be prepared to leash your dog quickly if necessary.

Keep your dog in view at all times and never leave him unattended.

Be sure to close all gates to the dog park after entering or exiting.

Never bring a female dog in heat to the dog park.

Do not bring food, dog toys, or dog treats inside the park.

Infants and small children should not be brought into the “off-leash” area of the park.

AND … Yes, you must pick up the poop! Be sure to clean up after your dog. Bags may or may not be provided at a particular park, so it would be best to bring a few bags with you.

Having a safe, fulfilling time at a dog park is ultimately determined by dog owners, not the dogs. Being attentive to your dog, as well as other dogs in the park, will help you foresee a potential problem ahead of time. Communicating and cooperating with other dog owners will help ensure that the dog park is a pleasant environment for everyone.

9 Steps for Finding a Lost Pet ~ By Sheryl Greenblatt ~

Losing a pet is every fur parents worst nightmare. If your four-legged child has gotten loose or snuck out, reacting quickly and calmly will give you the best chance of having them returned without a single whisker harmed. Here are nine steps to bring your baby home:

1)

Canvas the neighborhood as soon as you notice that your pet is missing. Enlist family, friends, and neighbors to help. This can be a traumatic experience for your pet and they will likely be frightened. Call the animal’s name repeatedly and have treats and a leash or carrier on hand to entice your baby over.

2)

File a lost pet report with the local animal shelters. Visit the shelters each day and check online to see if your baby has been found and brought in. You can search The Animal Foundation online at: www.animalfoundation.com/lost-found/ and Henderson Animal Shelter at www.cityofhenderson.com/ animal-control/lost-and-found.

3)

If your pet is micro-chipped and registered with a service like Home-Again or 24PetWatch, notify them immediately so they can send out an alert to pet lovers in your neighborhood.

4)

Make missing pet posters and hang them around your neighborhood. Place them on mailboxes, street signs, in grocery stores, the library, etc. Include breed, color, weight, sex, age, and any special markings. If possible, leave one identifying characteristic off of the flier. When someone finds your pet, ask them to describe it so you know they’ve got the right one.

Make sure to include your contact information and any special instructions about approaching your baby. You can offer a reward, but it’s best not to list the amount on the poster.

5)

Contact veterinary clinics throughout the valley to see if anyone has brought in an injured or stray animal. Since vets can scan for micro-chips, a rescuer may bring your pet there even if they are not injured.

6)

Utilize the power of social media. Include your flier on Facebook, Twitter, and any other sites you use. Ask friends to share the post so it reaches an even wider audience.

7)

Place a few pieces of worn clothing outside your house. If your pup is still in the neighborhood, he may be able to pick up on your smell and follow it home.

Visit www.petharbor.com and search by city. This will allow you to check with local animal rescues that may have found your pet and are keeping him or her safe until you can be reunited.

Don’t panic and never give up. Pets have been returned to their families months, even years later.

These steps can help bring your baby home, but the best time to take action is before your pet gets lost.

- Always make sure that you have a RECENT PHOTO of your baby.

Most importantly, get your pet MICRO-CHIPPED. For a minimal amount of money, and a small amount of discomfort to your baby, you can ensure that if Fido ever gets out and is found, he will be returned to you within two shakes of a dog’s tail.

hen searching for the right kitty for your home, consider the many personality traits of each kitty while at the same time understanding the energy and dynamic of your home and family. Like us, each kitty has their own likes, dislikes and quirks which make up their individual personalities, from outgoing and talkative, to calm and lap loving to the most independent kitty who does things on their terms.

We encourage all new adopters to determine the personality they want and talk with an adoptions counselor to help find the best fit for their home, the idea is to make a purr-fect match for a forever home.

When adopting a young kitten, make sure you prepare your house before kitty arrives. You want to make sure the small toys are picked up, plastic bags are out of reach, cords/wires are tied/secured to not be chew toys and under-cabinets holes are secured so they do not get stuck under the cabinets. Have a single room for them to be in when they arrive, giving them a few days to adjust to you, their new surrounding and smells. If you have other pets, put their blanket by their food bowl, and vice versa, so they associate the other cat with the positive of food.

Kittens require a lot of interaction to keep their minds busy; a bored kitten can be a destructive kitten. Have many different types of toys; balls to chase, mice to toss around, balls in tracks, hanging toys and interactive toys with feathers to be a part of playtime. Scratching posts of different sizes and materials are essential for kitty to maintain healthy habits and avoid your furniture. Even though kitties like their independence, they also love their families and want to be a part of your life, so

spending time to play with them will keep them healthy and strengthen the bond with you. If you work long hours, we always recommend two kittens to occupy their time, which in turn will be less interruptive for you and your things.

Older kitties make fantastic pets for those who have a more calm and structured lifestyle, since they are out of the crazy, learning phase and have better manners.

Older cats still bond with their family and appreciate their people and what they do for them. Cats still need you to interact and play with them which is the easiest and best way to form a strong lifelong bond.

After a week (the suggested time), then kitty should be ready to explore the rest of their new environment. If you have other pets, supervised introductions are a must for the next few days so you know they will get along without issues. The typical hissing/swatting/growling is to be expected for a few days, it is their way of setting boundaries and getting the hierarchy figured out between them. Once they begin to settle down you will see them getting along and eventually being friends.

Sharing a life with a kitty or multiple kitties is so rewarding and good for your health. It is known that the purr of a cat helps reduce stress, keeping your life balanced and fun. They show love, enjoy play time, snuggle with you and will cherish you as part of their family for life.

Understanding What Fido Is Trying To Tell You

You’ve probably noticed that your dog seems to predict your next move, using some of the most subtle clues as their guide. For instance, has your dog ever realized that you’re done eating before you even get up from the dinner table?

They know not only our words, but our mannerisms as well, and if you’ve owned dogs for any length of time, then you are already communicating with your dog and reading their body language also.

So what signs are we seeking?

Take small scenarios. When your dog lingers by the door, that indicates that they want to go out. It may mean they have to go potty, or perhaps they just like the outdoors.

The bottom line is that they just told you they wanted to go outside. Perhaps if they are pacing by the door and whining, it’s urgent, and they are about to have an accident if you don’t open the door for them.

If they are wagging their tail, they’re usually happy, but if their tail is tucked between their legs, they are frightened, ill or uncomfortable.

You can also learn a lot from a dog’s posture. Two friendly dogs at play have a completely different posture from two aggressive dogs.

Take a look at their eyes and ears. When your dog is happy, their eyes are wide. Their body might be writhing, but not tense, and their ears are relaxed. They might even appear to be smiling.

A frightened or aggressive dog will appear to be squinting, pulling their ears back or up and their body and face are rigid. They may also 22

show you every tooth accompanied by a growl as a means to intimidate and hopefully, if you back off from them, they will too.

A dog that lacks confidence may cower if you raise your voice or make sudden movements. You may see them fall into a fear-aggressive stance which appears as if they are protecting themselves while warning you to stay clear.

A depressed dog may not eat or spend the entire day sleeping, only to glance up for a moment. They may drag their paws and hang their head down, similar to a second grader who just failed their spelling test.

Then there’s the anxious dog who may whine, pace, pant, yawn or chew things. They won’t settle down. Chances are if they are making you anxious, then they are anxious.

Joint health is often overlooked by many pet owners as most conditions of the joints develop gradually over time. Signs can be difficult to interpret. Arthritis or “inflammation of the joints”, which is one the most common conditions we treat in dogs and less commonly cats. There is a some genetic influence on the development of arthritis, but there are environmental predispositions as well. Some breeds that have a high incidence of arthritis are Labradors and Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and giant breeds such as Mastiffs and Great Danes. Uniquely, the Dachshund is prone to arthritis due to their compact but elongated body conformation, although any breed can develop arthritis. Obesity, trauma, excessive activity, and nutritional deficiencies are some secondary environmental precursors to the development of arthritis.

Hip and elbow dysplasia are congenital conditions seen in puppies as young as 4 months. In the more common hip dysplasia, you may notice a young puppy exhibiting some bunny hopping when running and intermittent lameness in the hind end, especially after exercise. He may also hesitate going up the stairs and seems to have an unsteady or wobbly gait. In elbow dysplasia dogs may limp on front legs, hold their front legs in abnormal positions(usually pointed outward or away from their body), have visually swollen elbows, or hesitate to go down stairs.

The most common joint problem in young active adult dogs is ligamentous injury, most commonly cruciate ligament tears in the knee. In the common cruciate injury dogs usually have a history of excessive activity or play with subsequent lameness on one of the hind limbs. Obesity at this stage of life can start to affect the joints as well. It is prudent to be aware that traumas are common in this life stage, whether it be ligamentous, soft tissue or skeletal and veterinary care should be sought as soon as possible to avoid or minimize long term problems with arthritis.

Your beloved pup is considered a senior when he approaches 7 years of age. By this time, whether it be a long standing congenital abnormality, prior trauma or obesity, seniors are very prone to developing Chronic Degenerative Osteoarthritis. Chronic DO is commonly diagnosed and mistaken for normal “slowing down due to age” by many owners.

Some signs of DO are reluctance or slow to rise from laying position, stiff gait, thickened joints, behavior changes such as being grumpy, snapping, or aggression, and general lethargy or malaise. Owners may also complain of inappropriate urination or defecation in the house, simply because they are often so painful they can’t make it outside. A full medical workup including xrays of any affected joints, chest and abdomen, bloodwork and urine testing should be considered to assure that there are no other medical conditions that can be addressed in addition to Degenerative Osteoarthritis.

BEARDED DRAGONS a favorite among reptile hobbyists

I

ndigenous to Central Australia, the bearded dragon (Pogona Vitticeps) first made its appearance in the reptile industry in the early 1990’s. Becoming one of the most popular, recognizable species in the trade, bearded dragons quickly became exceptional pets.

Having a naturally curious demeanor, this docile, inquisitive lizard all but demands attention. Possessing outstanding social skills, it’s hard to resist falling in love with such a diversely, charming character. From comfortably sitting perched on an owner’s shoulder, to scuttling beside them on a leash, these lizards are mellow, almost mirroring “dog” like members of the family in behavior.

In captivity, bearded dragons possess an average lifespan of seven to fifteen years. They are a long-lived, remarkably hardy companion animals with personalities all their own.

As juveniles, bearded dragons require various nutritional elements in their diet to flourish into adulthood. With movement playing a key factor in triggering their hunting skills, 75% of their diet in youth should include various forms of protein in the form of insects. Crickets, meal worms, and wax worms are suitable prey items, commercially available in numerous retail settings to satisfy this substantial nutritional need. The other 25% of diet in youth should 26

include various dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, dandelion greens, and mustard greens. In addition to this vegetation, various fruits and vegetables should be offered as nourishment as well, including but not limited to strawberries, blueberries, bananas, raspberries, and carrots. As adults, this percentage reverses, changing dietary demands to 25% protein and 75% vegetation.

In addition to their unusual diet, bearded dragons require a thoughtfully constructed environment to laze about in the time of leisure. As juveniles, bearded dragons can be housed in a ten gallon aquarium with a screen top. They require a basking bulb to keep their temperatures in the moderate ranges of ninety degrees to one-hundred and ten degrees, mimicking Australia’s harsh heat to keep them health. In addition to the demands of high heat, bearded dragons require a UVB bulb to help in the process of absorbing calcium to keep their bones strong and healthy. To bask efficiently, the bearded dragon’s environment should include various climbing structures, as well as stone hiding arrangements to absorb heat from higher and lower elevations within their living quarters. While many opinions exist in suitable substrates for the bottom dwellings of the terrarium, ground

coconut husk, eco-carpet, and crushed walnut are among the most popular in use. Water should always be accessible on the cool side of the tank for the purpose of drinking and aiding in the process of skin shedding. Ultimately, a fully matured bearded dragon will require a forty gallon terrarium to live comfortably for the rest of its life.

Although these requirements may seem demanding at first, once a daily routine has become ritualized, bearded dragons are among one of the easiest animals to care for.

For Your Aging Pet

We all have to make adjustments as we get older and same with our pets. Just like us they may move a little slower, have trouble getting up and down from arthritics, need to be careful not to trip and fall and have vision loss. We know what we need to do to make the necessary changes in our homes for ourselves. So what changes should we consider for our pets? Here are a few.

FLOORING - I know you are not going to be change out

your flooring as your pet ages, but if you’re redecorating consider your options if you know you are always going to have a furry family member.

Carpet is great for traction, comfort and a softer surface if they happen to fall, but there are those pet stains. If considering carpet, look for a pet-friendly one which provide more stain resistant qualities. They’ve been designed to prevent pet stains from soaking through to your carpet padding as well as reduce pet odors. No matter the carpet be sure to upgrade to a moisture barrier pad.

For hard surfaces, you need to be concerned with slipping when they’re off and running or being able to get their footing when getting up. If replacing look for ones that have texture versus a smooth finish. Area rugs will help for those areas they like to take the corner or their favorite spot to lay, but you must also have the proper pad underneath so they stay in place.

SAFETY - Keep them away from unsecure exits or areas

where they can fall, especially a flight of stairs. Instead of a plain baby gate consider a iron doggie gate.

LOSS OF VISION - If your pet is not seeing as well

and sleeps on the bed or sofa, you need to help them with their depth perception. There must be a contrast from where they are to the floor. With mine I added contrast with lighting and pattern. In my bedroom, I placed rope lighting underneath the bed. It gave a soft glow and didn’t bother us at all. In our family room I used a patterned area rug under the sofa.

They may also need some help getting on and off the bed or sofa from loss of vision and/or arthritis. My Maddy didn’t take to the pet steps or ramp. So instead I placed a low ottoman on the side of the 28

bed and sofa which worked perfect. And I hate to say it, but we also removed the bed frame when she went blind.

It’s also a good idea to ease their anxiety by keeping floors clear of clutter and not move furniture around. These little things add up.

FABRICS – You might find they are having a few more accidents, so consider fabrics that have stain resistant qualities or add a stain-guard fabric treatment. Microfiber and micro-suede are my personal favorites. They’re easy to maintain with soap and water.

Leather is great but can stain from pet urine. I’ve been told that cat urine will permanently stain leather, but I have not come across that problem yet. Leather can also be slippery so watch that they don’t fall. I found this with the ottoman I used in my bedroom, so I re-upholstered it with a textured fabric.

You can also consider Crypton, a super stain, water and bacteriaresistant fabric. Liquids literally run right off the fabric.

With all that being said about fabrics, remember urine will soak through to your pillows, just like any liquid spill. A solution is to have waterproof pillow covers made which will save the life of your sofa if they are having regular accidents. For your bed, use a waterproof mattress cover. I know keeping them off eliminates all stain problems, but it seems as they age we all get softer and just want them to be happy.

We all have to make adjustments when we age so think about what you can do for your pets.

Pets and people – there are many benefits of having a pet in our lives. They’re great for all groups of people including seniors. Many times seniors are discouraged from having a pet because of the responsibilities. Consider though that the rewards and benefits may possibly outweigh any concerns. Each person’s situation is unique but there are many reasons why it is important to encourage seniors to consider getting a pet.

For many seniors a pet bird is the perfect choice. It’s relatively easy to take care of a bird when compared to dogs and cats. It is, however, important to know the requirements of any pet you select to make sure it is a good fit between pet and person.

Popular small pet birds to consider are:

• Canaries • Zebra Finches • Parakeets or Budgies

Birds are lively and alert and constantly provide a sense of presence. Emotionally this helps an older person deal with loneliness and depression. Some studies show that having a pet increases our lifespan. A study dating back to 1975 shows that older people with birds have better survival rates than those without birds. For years retirement communities and nursing homes have been studying the effects of pets on their residents. The Eden Project is one program and many participants have noticed the success in using small pet birds in these settings.

Birds are great choices for all ages but might be the best choice for the older person in your life.

Keep Pets Safe In The Summer Heat Never Leave Pets in Cars – Even a 5 to 10 minute trip means that temperatures could exceed 120 degrees in a car with closed windows.
