ith the holiday season rapidly approaching, you may already be planning your special meals and gifts for your family and friends. It is the time of year when we want to spend time with our families and show our appreciation to those that are close to us. It is also the season for giving – the perfect time to support and “give back” to a deserving animal rescue organization. There are so many ways to help out an animal rescue. Finding out what their specific needs are is a great start. Maybe they’re in need of cat litter, water bowls, bedding, or grooming supplies. Purchasing a few items for them is one option, but you may already have some items around the house that could be useful. Old blankets or comforters can make great bedding material. Maybe you have some extra bowls or containers around the house that could be repurposed into a pet’s food or water bowl? Extra leashes and collars are also things you may have on hand that could be donated. Another great gift for an animal rescue is the donation of your time. Find out what they need help with and when. It may be dog walking, bathing/ grooming, feeding, or even cleaning out cat litter boxes. (No, it’s not ALL fun stuff, but still needs doing.) Virtually anything you can help with will be greatly appreciated by the staff and beneficial to the animals. You will be providing a much-needed service. The value of your gift has little to do with how much it cost. It is your willingness to give that really counts –

sure your pets cannot drink the water in the tree stand. Tinsel, ornaments and lights are tempting for pets – help them resist temptation by keeping lower branches free of dangerous items.

HOLIDAY PLANTS – A few popular holiday plants that can be dangerous and sometimes poisonous for pets: Amaryllis, mistletoe, balsam, pine, cedar, holly, lilies and poinsettias. GIFT WRAPPINGS – Be aware that ribbon, yarn and string can cause serious problems if swallowed by pets. WHAT IS THE BEST FLOORING FOR PETS? By Gail Mayhugh

ONE QUESTION I GET ASKED A LOT FROM PET OWNERS IS, “WHAT IS THE BEST FLOORING FOR PETS?” WE ALL LOVE OUR FURRY FRIENDS, WE SURELY DO! BUT THEY CAN BE TOUGH ON SOME TYPES OF FLOORS. ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS IS THEIR NAILS. IF YOU DON’T KEEP THEM TRIMMED, THEY COULD SCRATCH EVEN A LAMINATE FLOOR. MANY PETS ALSO SHED QUITE A BIT, WHICH IS TOUGH ON CARPET IF YOU DON’T VACUUM A COUPLE TIMES A WEEK. AND THE OBVIOUS IS PET STAINS. THERE REALLY IS NOT ONE BEST FLOORING OVER ANOTHER AS EVERYONE LIVES DIFFERENTLY IN THEIR HOMES. Before you start, you need to consider five primary things: durability, comfort, maintenance, safety and your tolerance to mishaps. Make your list of: must have, would like to have and can’t have, before you start out shopping.

Carpet:

With carpet you have to consider its stain resistance and durability qualities. Carpets are more comfortable and slip resistance, but if you have allergies or asthma you must vacuum frequently. The dust and pet dander will wreak havoc with your allergies or asthma as well as the longevity of your carpet. You need to consider what the carpet is made of. Nylon and polyester are your best choices. Wool has an amazing soft hand, excellent resilience and durability but is very expensive. Nylon is durable, stain-resistant and affordable. Polyester is cheaper but considered less durable.

Vinyl: We’re talking luxury vinyl, not the

kitchen linoleum from years ago, although it did hold up for many, many years. Today’s vinyl is a super heavy duty vinyl product that is even designed to hold up in commercial applications. They come in sheets as well as planks or tiles. The planks and tiles are glued down individually and give the look of real wood or stone. The extremely hard surface doesn’t scratch quite as easily and does well with accidents. Plus, they soften the sound of your pet’s nails when why walk across.

Laminate:

Giving the look of wood without the maintenance, laminate is a very popular favorite for pet owners. It’s scratch resistant and good with accidents. One of the

to send you into a tizzy, hardwood is not for you. It’s beautiful but even the hardest will scratch, it’s wood. Just as with laminate, you need to clean up spills and accidents as soon as possible. If you really want hardwood floors consider one of the harder species such as, Brazilian Cherry, Mesquite, Mahogany or Bamboo. When shopping for wood, look for their Janka Rating. The higher the number the harder the wood.

Cork:

Cork has gained popularity with many pet owners. It’s eco-friendly and a naturally antimicrobial material. It’s comfortable, water-resistant, easy to maintain and sound absorbing. But it does scratch and heavy furniture will make indents.

Carpet style is also important. Steer away from any looped carpet where their nails can pull. Instead a cut pile is a better choice. Thick, high pile carpets do feel awesome, but will hold more fur and dust. Tile is great for pets; it’s durable and stain resistant. But you do have to consider comfort and they are slippery. Rugs and skidproof runners do help, but sometimes also slip under their feet if going at a good pace.

Hardwood: If a single scratch is going

The darker the stain and glossier the finish, the more visible the scratches. Hand scraped or distressed floors provide the best option for masking scratches, dents and scrapes will blend in with the natural look of the wood.

Look for pet-friendly carpets, there are many on the market now. They’ve been specifically designed to prevent pet stains from soaking through to your carpet padding as well as reduce pet odors. No matter the carpet be sure to upgrade to a moisture barrier pad.

Tile:

Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

s the holidays are coming up, this is a good time to talk about inflammation of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. The pancreas is a small but very important organ and is responsible for producing enzymes that help break down food for proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and insulin production, which is a key component for sugar regulation in our petsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bodies. Pancreatitis is one of the more frustrating illnesses, in that, the cause is unknown and it can affect all breeds of dogs and cats. That being said, it is thought that it can be caused by rich fatty foods or getting into something they are not supposed to. It is also possible for our pets to get pancreatitis even on the strictest of diets when their stress levels are increased. Other examples of foods that could cause pancreatitis include Halloween candy, turkey skin and bones, roast beef, ham and gravy. Some pets can even have low-grade long term pancreatitis without displaying clinical signs because their bodies can compensate. But, eventually they are exposed to something that makes them sick leading to outward signs of illness. 18

How do you know if your pet has pancreatitis? Pets will usually show vague stomach upset with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and an unwillingness to eat. Subtle signs such as drooling, acting more tired than normal, and eating inappropriate items such as grass can be the simplest of signs that your pet is not feeling well. Other illnesses can have similar signs so it is important to have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian. Clinical signs, physical exam, and blood work are usually used to diagnose pancreatitis. Often times x-rays or abdominal ultrasound are recommended. These diagnostics are helpful for ruling in or out other concurrent illnesses that may need to be treated.

Treatment Treatment for pancreatitis can be frustrating. Depending on the severity and concurrent illnesses, your pet may need to be hospitalized on supportive care to give them the best chance for a speedy recovery. The length of stay in hospital depends on how well your pet responds to treatment but the average is usually 3-5 days and can be longer.

The goal in treatment is to reduce inflammation in the pancreas by giving it some rest, which is achieved by intravenous fluids, gastro-protectants, pain management, along with getting them on a high quality nutrient diet. Your primary veterinarian may recommend that your pet be placed on a low fat bland diet long term to help reduce chances of getting pancreatitis again. Overall long-term prognosis is good if caught and treated early. Pets that have concurrent illnesses or if too much damage is done to the pancreas the prognosis may be more guarded.. It is important to keep our pets not only happy but healthy. Make sure to monitor what your pet eats during the holidays to avoid inappropriate meals and treats. Low fat treats or treats high in fiber such as carrots, zucchini, cucumbers and green beans are great alternatives.

or many of us the holiday season is stressful - we’re already juggling so many things to do and then the holidays add to our busy schedule: Holiday decorating, parties, school holiday events, gift buying, cards to send, special foods to prepare for family and friends….the list is endless. Increased STRESS at this time of year is inevitable but what does our stress have to do with our pets. Do our reactions to stress affect our pets? The answer is yes! Stress causes the body to release adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones cause heart and respiration rates to speed up and suppress the immune system. Our bodies prepare to “fight or flee”. Animals experience these same harmful effects as we do. Stress is contagious and “second hand” stress is harmful to pets. Pets often mirror our emotional moods long before we have even identified them for ourselves. They are our personal “stress barometers”. They pick up on our moods by our voice, body language and other behaviors.

Increase playtime to help pets release excess energy through physical activity. Spending time playing with pets benefits everyone. Talk with your pet in a soothing soft tone – the sound of our voice helps reassure our pets that everything is okay in their world. They sense the underlying emotions of our words – the calmness of our feelings. Keep their environment as calm and consistent as possible. Provide safe spaces for them when holiday festivities become too hectic.

While stress can’t totally be avoided there is a lot we can do to manage the stress in our lives. First, we need to think about what is causing our stress. Is there something we can do to reduce it or make it more manageable? Sometimes our high expectations create unreasonable goals which results in increased stress. Second, stress management techniques can help manage the stress in our lives. A few of these are: exercise, yoga, deep breathing, and meditation. Ironically stress reduction is often given as a benefit for having a pet. Studies indicate that petting an animal lowers blood pressure. So what are some ways we can mutually help each other? 24

Spend some extra time with your pets – cuddle with them and pet them more frequently. Touch is so important for us and for our pets.

WHY PETS DON’T MAKE GOOD HOLIDAY GIFTS By Cathy Brooks

ight up there with the Norman Rockwell ideal of Thanksgiving is the image of a puppy or kitten climbing out of a gift box with big ribbon under the tree. How delightful! The sheer joy of the children, the merriment of the adults - it seems like such a great idea. It’s not. The reasons are many, but here are three good ones:

• CHAOS – Pets need calm time to be properly acclimated to new homes. Holidays are anything but. You run the risk of a new pet reacting badly and someone – pet or human – getting hurt.

• DIETARY DANGER – Fabulous food from Thanksgiving through Christmas can be dangerous or even fatal for pets. With house guests and chaos, it’s easy for food to be left out and consumed by a curious kitten or precocious puppy.

• DETRIMENTAL DISTRACTIONS – Ever seen kids totally enthralled with a gift on Christmas morning? Ever seen that same gift tossed aside a week later when the newness is worn off? What’s fine for a stuffed animal or board game is categorically wrong for living creatures. If you want to gift your child with a puppy or kitten at Christmas, try this: Put a collar in a box with a book about how to care for a <insert type of pet here>. Tell your child that before they can have the animal they must show they can care for it. Make it a game. Give mock scenarios to care for the animal. Mark each correct answer on a chart or bingo card with fun stickers. When they complete the chart/card they get to participate in the process of bringing the animal home. Not only will this create a deeper engagement with the new pet, but insures both the pet and its new family are ready for each other. umans have long enjoyed a special bond with animals. And it’s not just dogs or cats that provide therapeutic benefits... but horses too. Horses have an amazing ability to read and impact our emotions, provide acceptance without judgment, and connection without words. Therapeutic Riding is an equine-assisted activity (EEAT) that provides a safe and rewarding experience for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. From children with autism or physical limitations to soldiers returning home with PTSD, Therapeutic Riding delivers physical, emotional and psychological benefits. Riders with physical disabilities often see increased flexibility, balance and muscle strength, and improved posture. Individuals with special needs find acceptance from these gorgeous creatures, learn patience, and see improved self esteem. Safety is always a priority, so new riders will be accompanied by two volunteers who walk alongside the horse and a horse leader. Individuals that are a bit nervous, may start out with Equine Assisted Learning, allowing them to bond and gain trust while still on the ground. The Best Nose Dogs or Cats?

oth dogs and cats seem to have an affinity for sniffing everything. Unfamiliar people and objects must always be sufficiently sniffed before they are either accepted or rejected by our pets. Dogs and cats are able to gain an abundance of information from a single scent and have a significantly keener sense of smell than humans. So which one has the superior nose? Dogs, by a landslide, win the contest for the best nose. By design, a dog’s nose is made for smelling. With up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their nose –far more than cats (at 80 million) or humans (at 6 million), a dog’s sense of smell is over 40 times greater than our own. Dogs also have the ability to move their nostrils independently, which helps them identify which direction a smell originated from. When a dog smells something, he does not just smell an odor like humans do. He has the ability to break a scent down into its individual components, identifying each part and piece that makes up that scent. A pizza, for example, doesn’t just smell like pizza to a dog. He can break down the separate smells of each individual ingredient that make up the pizza -- from the crust, to the toppings, and every spice that it contains. The ability to break down scents in this way enables a dog to gather an abundance of useful information. With one quick sniff, a dog can determine the sex of another animal, where it has been, and what it has touched.

Even though dogs have the superior nose, we cannot discount the smelling abilities of our feline friends. Cats also have incredible “sniffers”. Their tiny triangular noses are still FAR superior to ours, enabling them to sniff out food, mates, and predators. When a cat wants to smell something particularly interesting, it may open its mouth slightly as it inhales. This behavior is exhibited when a cat is trying to maximize his smelling ability. By opening its mouth, the cat is attempting to direct the scent to a gland in his mouth located behind his front teeth. As his mouth opens, the ducts in a gland called Jacobson’s Organ will open, transporting the scent directly into the nasal cavity. The scent of another cat (friend or foe) is easily detected using this method. Used as a form of communication, cats purposely leave their scent on things to let other cats know…“this is mine”.

When it comes to our human smelling abilities, we are far outmatched by both dogs and cats. Our noses are simply not designed to be “super-smellers”. But in certain situations, maybe that’s not always such a bad thing? J

Did you notice how many back-to-school books were in stores around August and September? No doubt one reason was to encourage reading! Now, in November and December, the holidays are getting close, so try this. Look for stories with holiday themes about Veteran’s Day or Christmas or Hanukkah or some other holiday. They can be found in many genres. But wait! You’re reading this magazine and are probably an animal enthusiast. Why not search for stories involving your favorite critters, too? Then, gather your furry friends.

ANIMALS ARE GREAT LISTENERS

Have you read to your pet lately? After taking a survey, it seems safe to say animals are great listeners! Well, okay, dogs are great listeners. Hamsters and parakeets look tolerant since they are usually caged and unable to leave the room. Yes, you may have to seriously bribe your cat to stay. Still, all in all, pets can be great patrons. Just as animals can be soothed by your touch, pets can become calmer when you read to them. Plus, there’s a bonus that many older people wish they had known when they were young. Can you guess what it is? If you’ve ever had stage fright, reading out loud to your pet will help. As you do you can become more confident to speak and read when human ears are listening like at school. So here are four steps to get you going:

THERAPY Pets are naturally therapeutic and have improved the lives of people in so many unique ways.

Dr. Leah Wingeart, uses her therapy dogs, Shanti and Stewart, in her private practice, ShrinkWrapt Las Vegas. Dr. Wingeart shared that her patients enjoy petting her dogs; they’re more relaxed and share about their past or current pets. They often say “I feel better already” even before their session begins. Her dogs help create a bond of trust between her and her patients which makes them more comfortable sharing their problems. Studies show that the presence of a pet helps patients form a bond or relationship with their therapist that positively improves treatment and helps them achieve their goals. Therapy pets also help reduce anxiety and stress during therapy sessions. Role playing is another example of how therapy pets can be helpful especially in working with children. They often can communicate their feelings to a pet easier than to a therapist. Pets also help reduce patient anxiety and stress by providing the opportunity for therapeutic touching. Hugging and petting a pet can be supportive and nurturing and is another benefit of ATT. Linsey Adams, a Clinical Trauma Professional and Canine Therapist at Solutions Recovery, shared this with us about her experience with ATT: “Many clients in rehab report 40

that they are in fear of the unknown and rehab is new to many clients. An AAT canine helps ease the fear and anxiety that a client might have so they can focus on their treatment. Dogs can defuse the therapeutic environment and makes it easier to be there, allowing clients to feel more comfortable. Many clients have dogs at home and they miss their pets. When I see a client in the hallway or in a group and they are a bit down because they are homesick, they perk up immediately when they see the dog and they smile. A smile is one thing I know that a dog can guarantee me with the client and this usually helps lift their spirits to focus on the group session at hand.” Solutions Recovery is an American Addiction Center Facility which offers canine and equine therapies. I think that the more we discover about animals the greater we appreciate their contributions to us. From companions in our personal lives to co therapists in the therapeutic healing process animals are truly amazing.
