BREAST CANCER AWARENESS this October Saturday, October 1, marks the annual kickoff of Breast Cancer Awareness month. This will be the 31st year that pink ribbon campaigns around the world will help raise thousands of dollars for research into the cause, and hopefully a cure, for the disease.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP RAISE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: Be an Advocate for Early Detection: Breast cancer is most successfully treated when it is detected before it spreads. Early detection can happen in two ways: recognizing and evaluating the signs and symptoms through monthly breast self-exams or by a screening from your physician. Be an advocate for early detection by regularly doing monthly self-exams at home, and by making sure breast cancer screening is included as routine part of your annual doctor visits. If you have daughters, talk to them about the risks of contracting the disease, and teach them how to do their own self-exams. Even if you don’t find a lump, signs of breast cancer appear in other ways. Changes to the appearance or shape of your breasts, or a thickening on or near the breast or underarms should be brought to your doctor’s attention. While the symptoms may not be cancer, it is still important to have them evaluated. If you’re looking for more information about early detection and how to do self-exams, visit breastcancer. org, or the Susan G. Komen website. There are also free mobile apps available that show how to do the exam, as well as send you a monthly reminder.

Be an Advocate for Prevention: According to the American Cancer Society and other healthcare organizations, the best way to prevent the breast cancer is to avoid unhealthy lifestyle choices. For those with a family history of the disease, there are some preventative medical options that can be taken as well. Obesity can increase the risk of breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women. Maintain a healthy weight with a sensible, low fat diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, couple it with regular exercise, which decreases hormone levels that can impact the risk of cancer. Reduced alcohol consumption is another healthy choice; studies have shown that women who drink two to five alcoholic beverages a day are at a greater risk for developing breast cancer than those who abstain. Medical measures have also proven to be effective for women who are at increased risk due to a family history of breast cancer. Certain drugs have proven to be effective, but can have side effects and risks of their

own. Genetic testing is another option for those with a family history of the disease. The testing looks for mutated genes that increase the chance of breast cancer; if a mutation is found preventative surgery could lower your risk for the disease.

Be an Advocate for Awareness: Throughout the month of October, thousands of men and women will take part in Breast Cancer Awareness events around the world. The events will help raise funds for breast cancer research, as well as provide services and programs for patients and families. Breast Cancer Awareness month also reminds elected officials of the need to make the disease a priority issue. Be an advocate for awareness by donning a pink ribbon and participating in events such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure or the organization’s 60 mile 3-Day Walk. These gatherings and others, such as the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer®, are held in dozens of cities around the world. To find one near you, visit the Susan G. Komen or American Cancer Society websites. Smaller organizations, hospitals, and church groups also hold events, so be sure to check your local community listings. You don’t have to run or walk to be an advocate for breast cancer awareness, however. Donate your time by volunteering at an event, or sponsor a runner. Get your workplace involved in raising funds for the cause. Advocacy can be as simple as wearing the pink ribbon symbol of breast cancer awareness. Realty groups and businesses can do their part as well. Homes & Land magazine will continue their tradition of supporting breast cancer awareness this October by becoming a corporate partner for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Homes & Land annually donates $20,000 to fighting for a cure and by sponsoring breast cancer awareness events throughout the year. The need to raise awareness doesn’t end on October 31st. Pink ribbon events happen year round, and while the number of incidence rates and deaths from breast cancer are on decline, the war against this devastating disease isn’t over yet.
