The H&L Laneway Feature Home @ Interior Design Show West Built by Alair Homes Project Profile
The Story Behind the Image
With the generous support of Homes & Living Magazine and the IDSwest team at Informa Canada - the Laneway Home has been built by Alair Homes and features internal building systems by Italinteriors. The design of the home is a collaboration with Gaile Guevara & Vanessa Leung of Modern604, Paul Conder of Waddell and Conder + Laneway Consulting Incorporated and Graham Blake of Italinteriors. The home feature has been designed and constructed through the collaborative and generous contributions of designers, student volunteers, suppliers, trades and businesses.
By “Metrics Framing” the Laneway House with light, we have created a ghostly outline of our Laneway House in a temporary location. The “Ghost House” is an metaphor to the need for dialogue regarding housing issues and density in Greater Vancouver. Our goal? To collectively come to better solutions and change perspectives on existing and future laneway house models. Over the summer this warehouse was transformed into a construction site and used by the project team to build and finalize our cutting-edge Laneway Home. IDSwest attendees will be the first to tour our completed Laneway Home on display at IDSwest! The Process
This warehouse space in Burnaby, donated by Ledingham McAllister, was the build site for the Laneway Home. Here we have constructed an innovative and new example of laneway housing that will challenge people’s expectations of laneway living. The objective of this collaborative exhibit is to shift the demographic of people who would consider living in a laneway home while sparking conversations surrounding value in design and the current and impending housing challenges we will be facing.
“In order to illustrate the concept of the Laneway House prior to its construction, I came up with the idea of light painting the outline of the structure within the warehouse. I wanted to physically paint the outline to scale, to create more of an organic, ghostly feel. High-powered LED flashlights were used for the light painting. Vertically spacing two lights on a stand & wheeling the stands around the perimeter created the roof lines. A human figure was used to give a sense of scale. The final image was created using several layers, which were masked & blended in Photoshop.” - Roger Brooks | Photographer

The collaborators on this project feel that laneway housing may offer a solution, in part, to issues that stem from a population that is aging. A laneway home may offer many of those living with Alzheimers Disease, for example, the opportunity to extend their time spent at home with family. After-all, our Laneway Home is not just a home, it is a way to keep families together.
