| PUBLISHER’s message

The Mountain Climber A Vancouver Island mountain climber, desperate to conquer a challenging cliff face in Strathcona Provincial Park, initiated his climb after years of preparation. He wanted all glory all to himself so decided on a solo ascent. He struggled against his timeless adversary, utilizing all his knowledge, experience and strength. The warm day bled slowly into chilly night, but still he continued to climb. Night fell with heaviness at a very high altitude. Visibility was zero. Everything was black. There was no moon, no stars, no sound.

P Publisher’s Message With a new year often come resolutions. I’m going to get into shape this year, I’m going to quit smoking, or I’m going to start my own business. In order for any resolution (change) to happen, you must take action and let go of whatever you’ve been holding onto that has held you back. And so, as we begin a new year it reminded me of a story that had a profound effect on me (see right); helping me to achieve. I hope this story helps you or someone you know. Happy New Year everyone… may all your resolutions come true. Robert Read, Publisher/Founder

He was climbing a ridge about 100 meters from the top, when he slipped and fell. The rapid descent brought him close to the mountain’s side, and he could only see blotches of darkness that passed. He felt a terrible sensation of being sucked in by gravity. He kept falling, and in those anguishing moments, a succession of memories passed through his mind. In that moment, he thought he would die. Suddenly, he felt a jolt that almost tore him in half. Yes! Like any good mountain climber he had staked himself with a long rope tied to his waist. In those moments of stillness, suspended in the air he had no other choice but to shout, “HELP ME! HELP ME!” Suddenly, from the darkness came a deep voice. “What do you want me to do?” “Save me.” “Do you really think that I can save you?” “Yes I do.” “Then cut the rope that is holding you up.” There was another moment of silence and stillness, as the climber’s grip tightened on the rope. The following day, a rescue team found a frozen mountain climber hanging to a rope... two feet off the ground. Sometimes you need to let go of what you’re hanging onto in order to live.

“We love the colour red for Christmas and so our tree reflects that. The holidays are a time for fancy and fussiness and we feel our tree captures that spirit perfectly!”

“Our ‘Memory Tree’. The ornaments are made up from purchases made during our travels. Each time we go somewhere we try to buy a Christmas ornament. If we can’t find a Christmas ornament, we adapt fridge magnets (Moscow) or keychains (Tahiti).”

“Our hanging Christmas tree! We needed to hang our tree from the ceiling this year because our 13 month old was walking and into everything! This was the perfect solution for our family friendly tree!”

| editor’s message

E Editor’s Message 2012 is well underway and spring is finally upon us! The weather has been exceptionally good and the island is coming to life; buzzing with activity. Homes & Living magazine has also been busier than ever, with our successful expansion into Vancouver in February. In the pages of this issue, I am pleased to share my interview with BC Premier Christy Clark in our Celebrity Profile feature. Premier Clark was insightful, down to earth and a pleasure to talk with. Read the full article [page 24] to learn how Christy Clark sees the personal side of life as a woman, mother and proud British Columbian. H&L’s feature home [page 40] ‘Verde Del Mar’ by Alair Homes is the perfect seaside residence. This well designed custom home - nearly 5,000 square feet - was built to accommodate a busy family. With a waterfront location and an ‘inside-out’ mindset, this is the type of custom home that island readers can definitely relate to. In British Columbia, it has been said that if you don`t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it`ll change. Celebrated journalist and H&L

columnist Tony Parsons shares his unique and often humorous take on this subject with Tony’s Take on BC Weather [page 30]. If you embrace the many moods of BC weather, and want to see it in full force during storm season, read about Storm Warming at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in this issue’s Resort Escape [page 62]. Homes & Living magazine has a stellar 2012 editorial lineup including interesting columns and extraordinary articles. Watch for my exclusive interview with legendary hit man, David Foster in our summer 2012 issue. Also in 2012, H&L is proud to have some of the most incredible feature homes we have ever showcased in H&L. Stay tuned – it’s going to be a great year!

And to All

A Good Night Dreamy bedrooms with soothing colours and a relaxed sense of style

HLMAGAZINE.COM

We spend at least a quarter of our lives sleeping, or at least in our bedrooms trying to sleep! There are some important things that can be done to any bedroom to make it more comfortable, relaxing and sleep-inducing just by addressing key areas of the room… and style doesn’t have to be sacrificed either!

18

Start by creating a soothing and relaxing colour scheme. Choose soft, warm colours like Dulux China Rain, a warm gray/green, Martha Stewart Home Ice Rink, a warm gray/blue and Benjamin Moore Bed of Ferns 1511.

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, so make sure that it really stands out. No matter how big or small the bedroom is, place lots of attention on this piece. A proper headboard, whether it is upholstered or wood, is important to keep the mattress and sheets in the right place as the night progresses. Bedskirts aren’t as popular as they use to be, so purchasing a platform bed or one with rails and a footboard can eliminate the need for skirts entirely. If your sleeping space is small, choose a low footboard that it won’t close the room in or make it feel smaller.

JANE LOCKHART: And to All A Good Night |

SPRING 2012

Soft fabrics, a serene colour scheme and flexible lighting make this bedroom a dream come true.

19

| JANE LOCKHART: And to All A Good Night

After. A deeper wall colour and the addition of white ceiling beams add architectural detail. The four-poster bed with flowing floor length sheers and bedding in warm, neutral tones is now the dramatic focal point in the elegant room.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

For bedding, there are multiple choices available. For sheets and pillow cases, cotton is the easiest fabric to deal with as it’s breathable, washable and comes in a wide variety of styles and colours. Consider shams and duvet covers in one of the new durable microfibre fabrics to create the look of suede; a nice addition to your bed in winter months. This chic, washable fabric will stand up to the wear and tear of pets and children, should they happen to inhabit your bed from time to time!

20

Pillows are the accents that cause the most division between couples. Women love them, men hate them! Adding large decorative euro shams are a good way to add softness to a large wood headboard if you sit up in bed to read. These square pillows also add an attractive decorative base to a bed and will hide your sleeping pillows that are often smaller and not always the best to look at.

Above. A reupholstered antique chair and mirrored nightstand lend a touch of romance.

| JANE LOCKHART: And to All A Good Night

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom… make sure it really stands out

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Probably the most important element in a bedroom is lighting, both bedside and windows. Ultimately, a good night’s sleep is more likely to be achieved if your bedroom is entirely dark at night until you rise in the morning. Most city dwellers have become accustomed to the urban lights around them but it’s unhealthy to allow this light to enter your bedroom at night, as your body doesn’t know to shut down. Adding both light filtering blinds which provide privacy, and light during the day, paired with drapes with blackout lining are the ideal combination.

22

Bedroom lighting should be flexible so that you can have a lot of light when you need it, but low and soft when you want to relax. Bedside table lamps should be at least 26 inches high, so that it casts a large enough pool of light when you sit up in bed to read. A bright overhead light is also a good addition for tasks like cleaning, packing or making the bed. Put this light on a dimmer switch, since there will be times when you won’t want or need the maximum amount of light.

For comfort under foot, opt for either area rugs on hardwood flooring or add broadloom to your bedroom if you like the comfort of carpet to walk on daily. Make sure that the area rug covers the area where you get out of bed so you don’t have to step on a cold floor first thing in the morning. There are wonderful broadloom options for bedrooms that are modern and stylish if this is the route you want to take - anything from wool to bamboo are now available. Keep the bedroom as uncluttered as possible so when you do finally get the chance to enter it, it feels like a retreat. Keep as many papers and day-to-day items in other rooms or out of sight in a pretty desk or night stand. A comfy chair and ottoman set in a corner is the perfect place to curl up and read or watch the news before bedtime. A clutter-free space that is both comfortable and stylish will create an atmosphere designed for sleep so you’ll wake refreshed and ready for a new day.

Above. Add shine to your bedroom décor with a sprinkle of reflective accessories; crystal light fixtures, candles, mirrored accent furniture and accessories and shimmery satin fabrics.

Creating beautiful lighting for beautiful homes. 23

Celebrity Profile: Premier Christy Clark |

While preparing for my interview with Premier Christy Clark, I had concerns in how to approach this article. After all, Homes & Living magazine doesn’t have a political column; we primarily concentrate on beautiful homes, interior design and lifestyle editorial. I needn’t have worried. Less than five minutes into our interview, it was clear to me that Christy Clark has an amazing personal side that H&L readers would love to learn about. After all, before she bravely dived into the role as the 35th Premier of this province in March 2011, Christy Clark was a woman with a point of view, a trailblazing mother with a genuine concern for family and community, and of course, a born and raised British Columbian. Those are qualities worth talking about...

Words by Tracey Drake

Christy Clark was born in Burnaby, BC and aside from attending school at the Sorbonne in France and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland; Christy has lived her life happily in British Columbia. Her son, Hamish, was born in 2001, making her only the second woman in Canadian history to give birth while serving as a cabinet minister [Minister of Education]. Having spent so much of her time in the public eye, either in government or as a radio personality, it is fascinating that Christy Clark has managed to keep the down to earth heart and spirit of a true British Columbian. As a woman and mother, she has learned to turn to family and the community to help raise her son, so that she can best serve her community as Premier, and be a better parent. “In 2001, when I served as Deputy Premier, I didn’t do such a good job of juggling my family and career, and everything suffered a little bit because of it. This time around, I admitted that I needed help, and I am now much more open to ask for that support from others: my hockey parents’ family, my school parents’ family and biological family. As a result, my son Hamish has this big, wonderful family and I worry less about being a working mom who can’t be all places, at all times.”

Celebrity Profile:

Premier Christy Clark “The most important building block of any society is family”

She has managed to finally find balance between personal and professional obligations and felt that living in British Columbia, a place that is so accepting of different lifestyle choices and family units, makes it all possible. Premier Clark just recently returned home from a trade mission to India and China, two countries that believe that raising children is the lifelong job of the entire family and the community at large. In the Chinese and South Asian cultures, the tradition of having multiple generations in a household is still very much alive. Christy was aware of how closely these values reflected her own. “My take on it is this – the most important building block of any society is family. Governments and schools are not the people who instill character in our children. As a government, we need to recognize, support and honour the work that families do. That is at the core of why I decided to run for office.”

On being a woman, mother and fierce British Columbian

25

| Celebrity Profile: Premier Christy Clark

Christy Clark was instrumental in bringing the ‘Pink T-Shirt Day Anti-Bullying Campaign’ to British Columbia. After talking with a woman on her radio show who was a former bully, the woman challenged Christy to make a difference. “I didn’t really know what to do and then I read an article about those two boys in Nova Scotia who started the t-shirt movement and I decided to bring that to BC.” This was a life changing experience for Christy Clark, who had no idea how profoundly bullying affects so many people. She is adamant about her continuing commitment to this issue, and she reports she is working hard to get the government involved in this initiative as well.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

“British Columbia is a province full of people who care about each other”

26

Christy Clark is fiercely proud of being a British Columbian. “People will willingly share with me what’s on their hearts and what’s going on in their families. That is the best part of my job because I got into this business because I wanted to help others.” She is a firm believer that we are a province full of people who care about each other – that is one of BC’s unique and greatest qualities.

“Although I was born and raised in British Columbia, we are mostly a province of people who have chosen to live here. What is better than that? I think that makes British Columbia the most special place in the country, and one of the best places in the world to live. And because people from different backgrounds choose this as home, as a people, we welcome difference here in British Columbia. I never found that when I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland or Paris, France and I missed the ocean.” Being near the ocean has a peaceful effect for Christy and she is one of those people who will always want to live near the water. Premier Clark was a pleasure to speak with. She is engaging, energetic and teeming with enthusiasm to affect positive change for the province. However, what I took away from my discussions with her was this: first, foremost and always – Christy Clark is a strong woman, concerned parent and very proud British Columbian.

“The Gulf Islands. My family got a cottage there in 1969, and since my father was a public school teacher, we would spend every summer there. It is a special place for me where I got to spend all summer long with both my mom and my dad. It is somewhere that I still love to get away to, whenever I can.”

What activities do you love to take part in with your son, Hamish?

“I used to think of myself as a runner. I love to run. Actually, if truth be told, I don’t love running but it’s the quickest and most effective way to burn off a lot of calories. I do love kayaking and own a little kayak that I like to take out whenever I have time. Also, my son and I just recently took up skiing together. It was a sport that we can do together. Hamish was amazing – four hours into our first day and he was up on the blue runs. I love it because it’s a family sport and we get to spend time on the chairlift, talking and laughing together.”

In your role as Premier, what is the most important legacy you would like to leave behind for future generations of British Columbians? “I would like to leave a province where every child can get the education they need to fulfill their potential. We have to strive to be the smartest place on earth where every British Columbian has the chance to succeed. | Tony’s Take on BC Weather

Bad weather always looks worse through a window

Tony’s Take on bc weather A very wise man named Kin Hubbard made this observation many years ago. And, when you think about it he was probably right on the money. Hubbard said; “Don`t knock the weather. If it didn`t change once in a while, nine out of ten people couldn`t start a conversation.”

Words by Tony Parsons

Well, spring is here ahead and we have a lot to talk about in British Columbia, don`t we? We`ll start with “isn’t this a great day?” Or, “If you don`t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it`ll change.” And a few months later, or perhaps even days later, the opener may be something like; ‘’Boy, do you think this rain will ever stop?” Or, if you live in the northern reaches of our province you might well ask,

“Have you ever seen snow like this before?” Well, in truth, I have.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

During the early days of our arrival in Canada, we saw titanic snow drifts sweeping across Ontario fields and snow banks piled so high you could barely see the sun hovering over them. Some days, when even the ploughs couldn`t negotiate the rural roads, we would stay cocooned in our warm parlours gathered around blazing wood fires waiting to be rescued, but secretly hoping help might never come at least until we`d run out of books to read and grilled cheese sandwiches to munch on. We knew, as someone once said, “Bad weather always looks worse through a window.” Of course, help always came and we eventually shrugged the snow off our shoulders and slid our way back to school or work.

The 2012 Trend Report for Cutting Edge Kitchen Renovations

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Words by Ben Vorst

Above. Today’s modern kitchen is all about blending the minimalistic language of form, the elegance of the interior accessory and the high degree of functionality with cutting edge design. The Siematic S2 available at Redl Kitchen Studio.

There was a time that kitchen redesign was a tale of compromises: sacrificing style for function, flair for conformity, warmth for ease of cleaning. No longer: the explosion in kitchen options means that there is a design out there that should satisfy each and every one of us, regardless of peccadilloes (I’m talking to you, countertop deep-frying fans). Advanced technology, flexible storage, and a rethinking of colour are opening new doors to a fresh and useful kitchen.

All of us foodies have a dream deep down: to wake up one morning and find our tired old kitchen magically transformed into an inviting and functional workshop just waiting for our masterful skills to bring it to life. Now that many of us are ready to make that dream come true for ourselves it helps to have an idea of what kitchen options are hot with designers these days, so that we can create a splendid cooking (and eating) space that will be the envy of all our friends; here’s a few tips.

Fabulous Flooring

34

Building a dream kitchen, even in the planning stages, means going from the ground up (banish that vinyl to the garbage heap!). Many kitchens are flooded with sunlight, and there’s no better complement to a sunny room than the natural look of hardwood. Wood floors are comfortable, beautifully timeless and resilient. The hottest trends in kitchen flooring are exotic woods, including Brazilian Walnut and Siberian Birch. Also, reclaimed wood comes with the upshot of built-in character, doing away with the worry of that dreaded first mishap ding in a new floor.

Whatever wood you choose, go with the broadest boards you can find: they’re most attractive, make a room look visually larger, and feel nice under the feet. Tile floors are also a popular choice for kitchens, and there are a tremendous number of modern options to suit your taste for visually stunning tile. It can make fine china endangered and mornings a bit chillier (unless you go with in-floor heating), but there is no replacement for the classy effect of brilliant stone tile.

IF YOU HAVE thE SPACE, TAKE THE PLUNGE with an island or breakfast bar Insatiable Islands

Even in 2012, no kitchen is complete these days without an island, or at least a breakfast bar. Indispensable for preparation, storage, even as a spot for informal meals, islands of all shapes and sizes are a staple of the modern kitchen. They’re also a great place to work at the laptop while cooking. If you have the space, take the plunge.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Kitchen islands are a great place to show off both your refined taste and foresight; contemporary islands come with built-in features such as microwave ovens, refrigerated drawers, and virtual wine cellars, most with digital controls discreetly placed.

36

Best of all, islands are highly visible and interactive, especially with bar-style seating around them; they are a fantastic way to show off your choice of exotic countertop materials, like cultured marble or attractive imported alternatives. A single slab of dazzling stone shows a taste for durability and fashion without going industrial.

Colours that Whet the Appetite

Kitchens are visually busy places, so it’s not always easy to settle on a cohesive colour scheme that incorporates all of the elements that will be in it. When appliances came in black, white, and steel finishes, it was far too easy to settle on a neutral theme that left you with a chessboard for a kitchen… but who wants to feel like a pawn for half the day? Busting out of the black-white cycle is easier now, with the variety of finishes on accessories and the return to embracing natural substances like granite and wood. Harvest colours like burnt oranges, deep reds, soft browns and faded yellows are an increasingly popular choice. Still, by all accounts this year’s “hottest” colour for kitchens is going to be grey.

Custom Look Cabinetry

The obsession with European-style, ultra-efficient cabinetry is fading – finally! Long banks of simple, uniform cabinets, adorned with (yawn) minimalist steel fittings, are falling away as quickly as they appeared, and people are returning to the host of original, craftsman-style cabinets of the past.

MAPLE | OAK | ALDER | BIRCH | PINE

FURNISH YOUR ISLAND HOME... WITH THE BEST ON THE ISLAND.

While the institutional cabinet trend is cooling off in 2012, people are reminded that:

From rustic to contemporary…

• Cabinets do not all have to be the same size, shape, and colour

From condo to castle…

• Flat doors create a wall-like effect – not perfect for dynamic, active areas

In maple, oak, birch, pine or alder customize with your choice of stain colours, hardware and fabrics

• Simple can be classy, but so can ornate and expressive With this in mind, stained wood custom cabinets with profiles and mouldings are surging back into popularity, as are rustic touches like cracked paint and brass & copper fittings. If you plan to have a lot of visible stainless steel in your kitchen (instead of black glass or ceramic), consider the attractive complement of grille inserts for your cabinet doors, especially in black steel or even wrought iron – they’re instantly classic and tone down the contrast between wood grain and shiny metal. Even with vintage elements like these, the overall trend for 2012 is clever combination of old and new: cabinets with built-in appliances are the future of kitchens, make no mistake. With planning, cabinets can be safely installed to seamlessly house ovens, warming drawers, and dishwasher s, tucking away the less attractive parts of our essential appliances. This makes going with brighter colours or stains – an increasing trend – a bit of a challenge, but you can look for appliances that offer alternative finishes like burnished copper to create a more even flow.

Designers are thinking outside of the ‘ice’ box Fashion Forward Plumbing

No, we’re not talking the depths under the sink here; faucets and sink basins have come a long way in recent years. Elegant is the name of the game with faucets, kitchen or otherwise, and stainless steel is still the preferred choice, although different finishes like oiled bronze are gaining ground. High arc or gooseneck faucets are all the rage, as are faucets with complete water filtration (and even carbonation) systems built in – say goodbye to the old, clunky plastic water filter.

Kitchens - Well Done! |

Reinventing Your Kitchen No Longer Means Choosing Between Style and Function Appliances that Work

The feel of the modern kitchen is still bound in some ways to its largest residents: the appliances. Thankfully, designers have been thinking outside the icebox for some time now, and the result is some fresh and funky ideas for cooking in style. Refrigerators will always be large, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be attractive. Innovations in cooling have translated into well insulated glass-fronted fridges (cutting down on the sterile metal aura), as well as refrigerated drawers that hide nicely in the cabinetry. Cooktops are becoming increasingly popular, freeing the stove from the oven; the independent cooktop can be installed in convenient countertop locations separate from the aforementioned wall oven. Cooktops come in a variety of cool designs, incorporating glass and ceramic (mostly) and they can use electrical, gas, or induction methods. Look for the hottest trend with raised pin cooktop elements if you want to impress.

An eco-friendly waterfront residence with aesthetic splendour Words by Ben Vorst Photographs by Artez Photography

When you love where you live, you want your home to reflect the surroundings as much as possible. That’s why building a dream home with a minimal footprint (and a complementary relationship to the environment) is so often about tough choices; luckily, having a contractor that has been through it all before makes it a lot easier. Verde del Mar (Green by the Sea) is evidence of this – a West Coast style custom home outside of Chemainus, where an island family teamed with Alair Homes to create a masterful, stylish structure that could have grown out of the earth itself. Not so long ago, building a rural abode was about clearing a blank canvas from the wild landscape and filling it with no regard for the area: man-made bricks and mortar plunked down in the midst of nature, a testament to technology conquering the elements. Nowadays, homeowners are (thankfully) more focused on maintaining the natural energy of a place, fitting themselves into a bigger picture.

“Communication was good - very good,” notes homeowner Jay Philippson, a native of the area, on the basis of the effective working relationship he and wife, Ana, were able to develop with the team at Alair. “Our first meeting with David [Babakaiff, Project Manager] was exceptional.” The match was a good one, not in small part because of Babakaiff ’s ability to encourage clients to think ahead when planning what (in this case) is a longterm residence.

SPRING 2012

Using eco-friendly practices, installing energy efficient appliances, incorporating native materials: all aspirations of most West Coasters… but where to start? The smartest starting point is ensuring that your building partner is on board and sharing your vision.

41

The space exudes a philosophy of airiness and natural light

David Babakaiff talked proudly about the Alair Homes approach to custom building. “A cornerstone of Alair’s philosophy is to provide the talent and take the time at the beginning of every project to understand the homeowner’s values, budget, preferences, and goals. Many times, by asking the right questions, we discover customers’ deep felt dreams of the perfect home (which they thought they could not have, so they don’t express it right away) and often those dreams can in fact be realized.” The dream for Jay & Ana Philippson has come true; they have achieved their goal of a space capable of embracing family and visitors without “over building”. With the help of Alair Homes, they mobilized the building ethos that it’s the quality of the space that counts, and while Verde del Mar is nearly 5,000 square feet (2700 sq ft home + 1150 sq ft garage + 700 sq ft guest suite), it is the thoughtful use of space that makes it feel both relaxingly open and cozy. The other goal – to create a home that embraces the natural surroundings and provides an adequate staging ground for the breathtaking view of the Chemainus River estuary and Salt Spring Island – has been reached as well, in convincing fashion.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The east side of the house is completely devoted to a connection with Stuart Channel less than 100 metres away. Most impressively, the Philippsons’ had the foresight to install a 10-foot span of folding (glass panelled, fully-insulated) doors that can be opened up onto the deck, eliminating the barrier between indoors and outdoors during the gorgeous West Coast summers.

42

Building in a relatively intact coastal forest area can be tricky, but it can be easier with foresight. Nobody wants to cut down trees, but everybody wants lots of natural light and an inspirational vista outside their windows. The lot was home to huge fir trees, which were selectively cut to let in more light. They were then custom-milled and used as part of the home construction. The harvest from the trees is on full display in the beautiful post and beams for the front entry, cross beams with king posts doweled together in the large vaulted main room, a solid custom fireplace hearth, and trim for windows and doors.

The first steps inside the home enter a space that exudes the philosophy of airiness and natural light – ceilings soar above a broad combination of kitchen and living room, culminating in lofty cross beams. The prominent windows and deck doors that dominate the eastern side of the interior do more than just flood the space with illumination; they create an interactive touchstone with the artistry of the area: one almost feels as if faced with a walk-in landscape mural.

This process was all part of the Philippsons’ vision to create a seamless transition from outdoors to indoors and back again. The exterior incorporates Whistler style elements including gables, cedar shingles and natural tones. The winding path to the front door goes past an open breezeway, offering an enticing snapshot of the view on full display from inside. A covered entryway, attractively accentuated by the fir posts and beams, frames a beautiful entry door, with pebbled glass and symmetrical black steel design.

DISTINCTIVE OUTDOOR FURNITURE

The kitchen, just off the main entrance, is a vibrant combination of maple cabinetry with chrome hardware, verde perla granite countertops, and a low maintenance granite double sink. Appliances are thoughtfully tucked away inside the cabinetry and a large island, topped with a single 10’ slab of the verde perla granite, doubles as a food preparation site and a locus for gathering family and friends in the unstructured space. The kitchen floor is a continuation of the entryway design, laid with subtle and classy Brazilian slate tile. The transition to the dining area is marked by a boundary of fir wood floors, with wide planks of the reclaimed wood providing a softer presence than the resilient stone of the kitchen. From there, an invisible shift to the open living room is affected only by furnishings and a low pony wall, retaining the free flow of the space. A sublime stone fireplace anchors the main room on one end; the air-tight design, connected to the air handler, improves heating efficiency in the house. Other environmentally-friendly features of the home include energy efficient windows, solid wood doors throughout, new insulation to R40, in-floor heating, and Energy Star appliances. The focus of the main area is unquestionably the tremendous view: The wraparound deck connects to the breezeway and entry path, creating yet another journey. To create the desired effect of the treated lumber deck reaching past the bedrock, Alair had to install special footings and a complex system of supports; nonetheless, bedrock has been incorporated into the design of the exterior of the home, continuing the natural theme. The deck also provides a second access to the master bedroom, abutting the living space, a haven of comfort that faces the same sunrise view. In lush carpet and neutral tones it, too, is an accent to the deep greens and greys of the outlook, and is itself equipped with a smaller set of fold-away doors. The bedroom is complemented by a spacious walk-in closet, as well as a luxurious ensuite bathroom. Equipped with a deep jetted tub and a capacious walk-in deluxe rain shower, the entire bathroom is done in travertine tile, and radiant in-floor heating.

Sofas Words by Roberto Bernardi

The Modern Synchronization of Function, Style and Luxury

The sofa plays a unique role in the Canadian household; always ready to play comforting friend or elegant host

The furniture we choose for our homes says a lot about who we are: flamboyant or reserved, indulgent or ascetic, daring or traditional, our home is an extension of our attitudes toward style, space, and sociability. When it comes to modern seating, today’s market offers a host of sensational sofa options – allowing every home body to express their unique style without sacrificing functionality or comfort.

Sofas hold a unique place in every household; they are central both in body and spirit. We count on them to be there when we come home exhausted, welcoming us with a familiar embrace. And yet we also lean on them to serve as a nexus of activity and hospitality during our social times, representing our desire to welcome friends and family into our home. As if this is not asking a lot, we also expect a couch to fit seamlessly into our overall vision of a stylish home, anchoring our most visible rooms and marking our place in the world of interior design.

58

Choosing an appropriate luxury chesterfield can be easy, if one has their priorities straight. First and foremost: What are your needs? Do you find yourself holding large parties where half the guests search longingly for a place to rest their weary limbs? Or do you need a family friendly gathering place for a party of five or less? Maybe you just need a personal hub, where you can gather yourself and enjoy a great book, or a fantastic West Coast lifestyle magazine?

Whatever the requirements, there’s a perfect option out there for you: don’t rest until you find it. The sofa is a very personal choice – an investment piece that should be a pleasure for as long as it stays in your home. Modern sofas come in as many styles, colours and patterns as can be imagined, but the upholstery still comes down to two main choices fabric or leather. The sumptuous nature of hide coverings make them attractive, not to mention durable, and the demand for leather home furnishings remains strong. Traditional fabric upholstery is much more dynamic, with a variety of choices, from casual cotton and linen, to formal velvet and damask. Shape provides a wealth of options, from the usual tripartite lounger to cutting edge designs of various forms. High-backed sofas are very hot for 2012, especially in loveseats and smaller scale cocktail sofas; angular peaks on backs and armrests are a natural complement to the high back, and the result is a renaissance in art deco design, with a touch of the modern achieved the use of through vibrant colours and reflective textiles.

The balance between art and function is ever present in the modern sofa; there’s a philosophy behind every element, obvious or not. Deep, heavily cushioned pieces of furniture speak to an ethos of comfort and familiarity, of long hours in contemplation or engrossed in conversation. Remove the armrests, and the piece is suddenly a stopping point along a journey through the room, a juncture for new connections and fresh, open discourse. Loveseats demand intimacy (as the name suggests), whether old friends or new acquaintances. Sectional and corner sofas, too, are specifically designed to encourage interaction between people; their orientation also dissuades fixations on a single point (like a television), guiding the activities in the room and, therefore, in life.

SPRING 2012

Sculptural sofa designs, like modular furniture, are a double-edged sword: they can make a room’s décor the talk of a party and a testament to refined taste… if they fit their surroundings. Always be aware of the space as a whole and the overall design priorities when choosing your furniture. For example, a down-filled sofa with white linen slipcovers may look out of place in an industrial loft space.

The entire staff at Black Rock, starting at the top with general manager Adele Larkin, see storm season a little differently, and I was eager to experience their unique take – storm warming – firsthand. Deciding on the weekend girls’ getaway experience, I brought along a very dear friend from Nanaimo, Karen Evans. What I hadn’t realized was how great it would be to see the resort through the fresh eyes of a newcomer, as I have stayed at Black Rock on three previous occasions, and Karen had never been.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort is a luxuriously laid back, oceanfront resort property on Vancouver Island’s rugged Pacific Rim coast that everyone should experience at least once – especially during storm watching season. Built with an obvious respect for Mother Nature and the natural elements that surround the resort property, Black Rock effortlessly blends wood, glass, steel and rock into unpretentious architecture brilliance. The oceanfront suite we checked into was the epitome of understated elegance. Our guestroom featured a large living area with fireplace, gourmet kitchen with separate dining room, splendid sleeping quarters, and spa-inspired bathroom with heated floors, soaker tub and rain shower, and a furnished balcony with the most remarkable views. If you come to the Pacific Rim to do a little storm watching, the private terraces at Black Rock are where you want to be.

SPRING 2012

One of the greatest winter treats in British Columbia is experiencing stormy weather on the west coast of Vancouver Island. One of the few places in the world where bad weather can be a really good thing, storm watching is a wondrous West Coast spectacle on British Columbia’s Pacific Rim. All winter long, a low pressure system builds, delivering storm after storm of natural spectacle – raging waters, turbulent shorelines and mesmerizing storm watching. One of the best places to witness the angry winter seas is in Ucluelet, BC, and specifically from the viewpoints at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.

Karen and I only see each other a few times a year so we had a lot of girl talk to catch up on. Given the extremely warm and cozy room, it would have been easy to stay put, with a few bottles of good wine, for the entire weekend. I was beginning to understand why they called it storm warming here. Later the first night, we headed to the resort’s celebrated restaurant, Fetch, which is located in the main lodge building. The dining atmosphere is one of decidedly West Coast graciousness, with a touch of eclectic art and a wall of windows to the vast oceans below. Internationally acclaimed Executive Chef Morné Van Antwerp, who joined the Black Rock team in June 2011, is a South African born chef who came to Ucluelet from The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts in Singapore. Chef Morné brings a level of international flair to the new menus at Black Rock, but never forgets to add the infusion of local flavours. “Our menus are created with locally sourced seasonal ingredients in mind.” Above. BC Snowbirds: Purchasing an Investment/ Rental Property in Central Vancouver Island

RETIREMENT

Think of BC as synonymous with Arizona or Florida. The West Coast is Canada’s paradise, a home away from home in the heart of nature’s gleaming elegance, where golf courses flock like the salmon of Capistrano. More and more Canadian retirees are purchasing investment properties in BC, as opposed to warmer counterparts to the south, because you can golf all year round and keep health insurance costs down.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Snowbirds looking to purchase property in BC should first choose where on Vancouver Island they want to invest (perhaps Qualicum Beach, Nanoose Bay or the Comox Valley), and then find a real estate agent who absorbs the ebbs and flows of the market. To determine the exact use of the property (investment vs. rental), the agent should be equipped to offer realistic estimates on costs, including mortgage payments, property taxes and strata maintenance fees, as well as offer suggestions to maximize revenue; location, location, location.

68

With location in mind, the core is usually a better investment. Retirees generally choose BC’s West Coast for its sparkly water, so residential pockets around a city’s centre are typically a good investment. In Central Vancouver Island, snowbirds can be found in Nanaimo, Parksville and Courtenay – to name a few - for part of the year, and choose urban areas because it gives Above. Canadians are living longer than ever before; planning for the future is critical.

LIVING

them access to entertainment, shopping, musicals, fitness—everything.

However, properties purchased solely for investment [and rented out unfurnished] tend to have a wider selection to choose from. Local real estate professionals state that, on the lower mainland, condos are the wave of the future. Researching the condo market before you invest may indicate a higher demand for studio and one bedroom suites in the furnished market, for example, and two bedroom suites in the unfurnished market. With location and condo layout in mind, choosing the right property management company could save snowbirds heaps of time and money. Managing a residence from afar can get complicated if a problem arises in the building or with a tenant, so it is advisable to hire a local property management company. An industry standard fee that property management companies charge is 10% of the monthly rental fee, and any other costs above that, the unit owner pay out of their snow-filled pockets. Although, a snowbird’s pockets wouldn’t be filled with snow if the winter was spent in a coastal rainforest, basking on golf courses in temperatures above zero -- no snow tires necessary.

| The Taxing Side of Owning a Foreign Property

Words by Douglas Parkhurst, C.A.

The Taxing Side of

Owning a Foreign Property So you have purchased a house in the Uinted States. NOW WHAT?

You have spent the last few years watching the prices of homes in Arizona drop to the point where you have decided to take the plunge and buy an investment property. Now that the initial excitement has worn off, you realize you need to figure out what to do next. First things first‌ Get your [new] house in order!

The first thing you have to do is to locate a reliable property manager. Property managers are individuals or companies that specialize in locating tenants, screening tenants and overseeing the day-to-day matters of being a landlord. Arizona and many other U.S. states require, by law, that properties owned by non-Americans have a registered property manager. We suggest that you look for well known, reputable management companies. These are professionals that make their living managing rentals. You should avoid part-time managers or companies with few listings in order to ensure that you minimize the chance of problems.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

As a new foreign investment property owner, you will now have to file tax returns in both countries. You should locate a CA firm capable of preparing both your Canadian and U.S. tax returns.

70

The general rule is that the Unite States requires any individual or company with property in the U.S. to file a U.S. tax return. This means that you have to obtain a U.S. tax number, and start to file a 1040NR (non-resident) tax

return. To obtain an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) you will need to visit an acceptance agent. Gary Ruffle Ltd is an IRS registered Authorized Acceptance Agent and we can help you obtain this number. If you thought Canadian taxation was complicated‌

We understand that a lot of Canadians find foreign tax reporting requirements confusing. Using the example of owning a rental property in the state of Arizona, the Canadian who owns the property will need to report rental income on the U.S. tax return. Your Canadian income is not taxable in the United States. However, as a Canadian resident, you are required to report U.S. income on your Canadian return as well. Many people at this point are concerned that they are going to be taxed twice on the income. There is a mechanism in the tax system that gives you credit for taxes paid in another country. While there are some differences between the two countries tax systems - how the income calculated, for the most part, the types of expenses that you can deduct are the same. In addition, you will likely have to declare that you own a foreign investment asset outside of Canada on your tax return. This is not a complex disclosure, but it is required for Canadian residents. It is suggested that you contact a CA firm familiar with both systems to help you identify what information you will need for tax time.

Above. Although the paperwork may seem daunting for foreign property owners, a professional tax accountant can demystify the process.

REjoice! renew.revive.refresh.

In 1960, the first working laser was used. The following year saw the first medical use of a Ruby laser which treated retinal tumors of the eyes. As tools, lasers have revolutionized our ability to treat the skin. Over the last half a century, this evolution has opened up possibilities of treating sun damage ranging from premature wrinkles and lines to brown spots, dilated red and blue vessels and even precancerous sun spots. Various scars can be improved as well as treating disfiguring birthmarks. In short, lasers improve the quality of the skin.

THE 4-D’s

There are four aspects of aging skin, termed the 4-D’s • Deterioration – this refers to the skin itself – approximately 90% of our skin’s aged appearance is from sun damage – lasers help address this • Deflation – we lose volume as evidenced by hollowing around the eyes, cheeks and mouth – dermal fillers address this by supporting and lifting • Descent - skin laxity, a result of collagen loss, leads to jowls and neck folds – this can be addressed non-invasively with focused ultrasound and pulsed radiofrequency therapies

HLMAGAZINE.COM

• Dynamic lines – this refers to excess lines such as frown and crows feet lines due to over expression – Botox is the common treatment used to soften these lines

72

Words by Dr. Mark Lupin Dr. Mark Lupin BSc MD FRCPC FAAD Dermatology Director – Cosmedica Laser Centre, Victoria Regional Director – Canadian Dermatology Association Clinical Instructor – University of British Columbia

The Wonderful World of Aesthetic Dermatology Dermal fillers have also evolved such that we treat the entire face rather than simply chase wrinkles. By restoring lost volume, more natural and longer sustained results are possible such as with the nonanimal hyaluronan fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm. Botox has been around for over 20 years and while being a worldwide phenomenon, it originated here, in Canada – Vancouver in fact. Paradigm shifts have occurred that have led to more natural and better results while reducing risks and minimizing downtime. Another exciting area is non-invasive body contouring. Utilizing focused ultrasound technologies, systems such as the UltraShape V3 and LipoSonix permanently remove fat around the tummy, hips and thighs as well as provide gentle skin tightening. If there is a cautionary point, it is the footnote that, concurrent with the rapid evolution of technologies, there is also a rapid increase in treatment providers which include many non-physicians such as dentists, nurses and nail technicians. For the public, the lines are blurred when they seek treatments with socalled aesthetic specialists who are not true medical specialists. Their learning curves are necessarily steep and they do not have the knowledge that a five year Residency and Royal College certification in Dermatology provides to properly diagnose and treat the skin. My own history is that of a physician of 24 years with Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and American Board Certification in Dermatology over 15 years ago. I have always been fascinated with the skin and its ability to interact with the environment. I spent part of my Dermatology Residency studying photobiology, the interaction of light and the skin, at St. John’s Hospital, in London, England. In 1998, I established Cosmedica Laser Centre in Victoria, BC. The concept was to offer a comprehensive service to my patients, employing the latest in technologies. I am thrilled to be working in this field of ‘happy medicine’ to brighten people’s days and see the extra degree of confidence they now wear. In upcoming 2012 issues of Homes & Living magazine, I will address some of the latest trends and exciting developments that restore healthy skin and help to create the “wow” we all deserve. — Dr. Mark Lupin BSc MD FRCPC FAAD

City Tile Announces Beautiful New 13,000 sq ft Showroom

An Attitude Adjustment in Home Furnishings Is Coming

Lifelong community advocate James MacIntyre has recently acquired two of Nanaimo’s local businesses - Pi Granite Fabricators Ltd. and Studio Kitchens & Design Ltd. Macintyre explains his philosophy, “Business isn’t always just about the bottom line; in many cases, it is the work within a community that helps a company succeed.”

After eight successful years in business, City Tile welcomes customers to their brand new, 13,000 square foot showroom that opened in August 2011.

MacIntyre was impressed with the local reputations of both companies before taking them over in October 2011 – one is known for high quality custom kitchens, bathrooms and countertops – the other for offering exceptional granite from around the globe. For the former CFO in the building industry and Chartered Accountant, buying the two companies presented a unique two-fold opportunity: offer outstanding products and services to the mid-island communities, and use the businesses as a vehicle to give back. MacIntyre’s two companies have already played host to charitable events, supporting the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island, and sponsoring SPCA Appreciation Night at a recent Nanaimo Clippers hockey game.

Owner, Dominic Staniscia, strived to create a functional, interactive environment for customers, “We wanted our customers to be able to look at the skid of tile-touch it, feel it, buy it, and then take it away. We didn’t want a gallery, so to speak.” The space was designed to utilize natural light, enhancing the displays, while bringing a touch of home to the space. Stanisca aims to provide an unparalleled shopping experience, with superior customer service and an outstanding array of quality tiles and products.

ScanDesigns is pleased to introduce the newest member of its elite group of companies - Muse & Merchant. The highly anticipated grand opening of the exclusive Muse & Merchant home collection store is coming soon. Inspired by classic European, American and Oriental designs, the collection offers reproductions of traditional and industrial pieces. If grandeur from a bygone era is what you seek, then you are sure to find a vast selection of pieces that will inspire that nouveau loft experience.

Expect to receive superb customer service and a warming sense of community when visiting the brand new showroom for Pi Granite Fabricators Ltd. and Studio Kitchens & Design Ltd. MacIntyre and his team will be pleased to offer you magnificent pieces to make your home project a success. City Tile boasts an incredible pallet of 2,200 tiles and natural stones, making them Vancouver Island’s largest tile supplier. The finest in ceramic, porcelain, slate, travertine, granite, glass and stainless steel tiles are personally selected by Stanisca from various countries and are imported to the new showroom.
