THE SAM AWARDS

Canadian Home Builders’ Association 100-7326 10 St. NE | Calgary, AB 403.235.1911 | samawards.com Back in 1986 the Sales and Marketing (SAM) Awards were simply a recognition award for exceptional homes. Today, the residential construction award categories have grown to include a variety of avenues in the home building industry. The original “Awards of Excellence” have since become their own stand-alone event; celebrating creative, innovative and professional work.

MCKINLEY MASTERS CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY

This year the Canadian Home Builder’s Association handed out 60 awards and five Grand SAMs—Builder of the Year, Renovator of the Year, Multi-Family Builder of the Year, Builder of Merit (small builder) and Partner of the Year—in recognition of the efforts and excellence of this industry. An industry that has built 12,500 homes this past year and is almost 40,000 people strong. Visit the website for a list of this year’s winners.

It has not always been a smooth road, however. It’s taken founder Mark Kwasnicki a lot of time and effort to put together a great group of people who he can trust and delegate to so he can finally take some time off. “This business is all about relationships,” Kwasnicki says. To celebrate, McKinley Masters is holding a party at its first showhome in six years. The luxury three-storey duplex with double garage—located in Bowness, where Kwasnicki grew up—is their first multi-family project. When asked what the future held for his company, Kwasnicki said, “young blood and fresh ideas.”

CELEBRATING THE FAMOUS 5

Heritage Park Historical Village Calgary, AB | 403.268.8501 | heritagepark.ca With their new exhibit, opening June 2014, the Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women, Heritage Park Historical Village celebrates five women who were instrumental in the fight for women’s rights in Canada—Nellie McLung, Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Lousie McKinney and Henrietta Muir Edwards. Back in 1929 they petitioned for the word “person” to include women under the British North American Act and won women the right to vote. For Heritage Park’s 50th anniversary, a replica of Nellie McLung’s 1907 home is being built. This 7,100-square-foot interpretive centre will include a classroom, library, veranda for Sunday afternoon teas and two levels designated to tell the stories of these remarkable ladies.
