The circulation of all MCN members totals over 2.8 million. Some MCN member papers do not run every ad — every week. They may elect to hold the ad until the next week, or if space does not permit, may not run it at all. Our research has found that an estimated 75% of all papers run the MCN ads on any given week. Even at 75% of the circulation, $249 is still an unbeatable price. Each publisher reserves the right to refuse any and all advertising. Tear sheets will not be furnished.

Watch your crops for signs of the spotted lanternfly Scientists and farmers are working together to stop the spread of a newly detected invasive species that could represent a serious threat to American agriculture — the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). Native to East Asia, the spotted lanternfly was first observed in Pennsylvania in 2014. Since then, officials have attempted to contain the spread by putting the affected parts of Pennsylvania under quarantine. However, the insects have since been spotted in the nearby states of Delaware, Virginia and New York. The spotted lanternfly feeds on a wide variety of plants, including many commercial crops. So far, the insects have caused serious damage to grapevines, apple and peach trees and hardwood timber trees. They’ve also been spotted on grain crops like hops and soybeans. According to the Department of Agriculture, the spread of this invasive species across the US could severely impact the country’s grape, orchard and logging industries. Furthermore, while many insects only lay eggs in soil or on living plants, spotted lanternflies can lay eggs on almost any surface, from firewood and brush to cars and lawn furniture. This makes it very easy for people to inadvertently carry the eggs into other areas and contribute to the spread. If you see a spotted lanternfly outside the known affected areas, you should try to capture it and put it in alcohol to preserve it. Contact your state Department of Agriculture or call the Invasive Species Hotline at 1-866-253-7189. If you live in the quarantine zone, try to stave off the insects by using the proper insecticides. Make sure to inspect items carefully for spotted lanternflies or egg masses before transporting them out of the quarantine area.

Three animals to consider raising on your hobby farm Many people get into farming with the intent of raising animals for food, milk, wool and even companionship. But if you’re new to farming and have never raised livestock before, it’s best to start by keeping animals that require less maintenance than larger, more demanding animals like cows and horses. Here are three animals that have lots to offer but are easier to manage for rookie farmers.

HOME MAGAZINE I JULY 31 - AUGUST 6, 2018

The spotted lanternfly is a newly detected invasive species that poses a serious threat to the country’s grape, orchard and logging industries.

1. Chickens. Other than clean water, nutritious food, a dry coop to nest in and a fenced area to run around, chickens require very little to thrive. With proper care, chickens can provide you with eggs, meat and fertilizer — and deliver great entertainment to boot! 2. Goats. Depending on the breed, goats can serve as an excellent source of milk, meat or wool. Goats require less space to graze than cows or sheep and will feed on all kinds of grass, weeds and shrubbery. However, make sure to keep goats in a well-fenced area as they’re very good at escaping.

Animals like chickens, goats and honeybees are good choices for hobby farmers wanting to raise livestock.

3.Honeybees. Although you’ll need to invest in some special equipment to get started, beekeeping is not as demanding as many people think. Other than hive boxes and a source of sugar and water, bees require very little to produce honey. If you’re new to apiculture, be sure to get a bee suit for harvesting the honey in late summer and early fall as it will ensure you avoid getting stung.

Did you know that the United States is the world’s top producer of both corn and soybeans? Since corn and soybeans can be grown in the same climate and fluctuate in market value from year to year, many farmers choose to rotate between the two crops. Crop rotation — the practice of growing different crops on the same land from year to year — not only benefits the soil but also increases crop yields. Here are three key reasons to consider growing corn and soybeans in rotation. 1. It maintains nitrogen levels in the soil. Corn is a grass crop that needs lots of nitrogen from the soil to grow. If it’s planted in the same field year after year, it depletes the soil of nitrogen, resulting in lower yields and poorer quality corn. Legumes like soybeans, however, have nodules on their roots that have bacteria that convert nitrogen from

the air into nitrogen-rich compounds in the soil. Soybeans can therefore restore soil nitrogen levels so that the corn can get the nutrients it needs during the next rotation. 2. It helps control pests and diseases. Rotating crops also helps to get rid of insects, fungi and bacteria by disrupting their current environment. For instance, soybeans often become infected by parasites called nematodes. Since nematodes don’t affect corn, rotating corn with soybeans helps reduce nematode populations by temporarily removing the host plants. 3. It improves soil quality. Soil tilth refers to the overall physical condition of the soil. In addition to replenishing nutrients, crop rotation helps to preserve moisture, aeration and drainage levels in the soil so that the tilth remains favorable to plant growth.

Many farmers choose to grow soybeans and corn in rotation to maximize yields and restore nutrients to the soil.

Cover crops: getting the most out of sustainable farming

Growing cover crops in addition to cash crops in a certain area keeps important nutrients from being depleted from the soil and helps limit erosion and choke out weeds. Common cover crops include cereal rye, oats, barley and clover. While cover crops have been used as part of crop rotation for thousands of years, more and more modern-day farmers are using co ver crops to help reduce the negative effects of farming on the environment.

114 W. Ruby Street, Mankato, MN

In general, cover crops are removed before cash crops are planted either by mixing them into the soil during tillage, or by spraying them with herbicides. Recently, however, many farmers have begun to experiment with a technique called “planting green,” which involves introducing primary crops like corn and soybeans into living cover crops. A week or so after planting, the cover crop is eradicated using an herbicide to make more space and nutrients available to the primary crop. Many farmers find that planting green can help with managing soil moisture levels, preventing erosion and improving organic matter levels in the soil. It also allows farmers to plant earlier in the season as the cover crop helps to insulate the ground. In some cases, planting green not only contributes to the overall health of the soil, but also leads to higher crop yields.

With the growing interest in sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices, many farmers are turning to cover crops as a way to maintain soil quality and achieve plant diversity on farms. Unlike cash crops, cover crops aren’t grown to be sold or consumed. Instead, they’re cultivated to sustain the fertility and productivity of crop fields over time.

When driving through the countryside, you may have noticed many tall hedges composed of trees and shrubs surrounding farms and crop fields. Farmers plant these hedges to serve as windbreaks — barriers that shelter crops from strong winds that can damage plants or blow away the soil. Windbreaks made up of trees and other vegetation help not only to prevent wind erosion, but also to help crops retain water and provide habitats for wildlife. The best windbreaks are usually composed of at least two rows of coniferous trees such as pines and spruces. Since conifers don’t lose their needles during winter, they are very effective at blocking wind year-round. Additional rows of trees and shrubs can also be added as further protection against strong winds and precipitation. If you’re considering planting a natural windbreak on your farm, it’s important to figure out which direction the wind usually blows during winter. The windbreak should be placed perpendicular to the predominant wind direction. Some farmers build L-shaped windbreaks to protect against both north-south and east-west winds.

When planting the windbreak, you’ll need to consider the trees’ mature size and make sure to give them ample space to grow. Choose trees and shrubs that grow well in your region; planting a variety of species can also help to ensure that the entire windbreak isn’t affected in case of disease or other environmental factors. While they take time to cultivate, windbreaks eventually pay off in higher crop yields and contribute to the overall health of your farm’s ecosystem.

Driverless tractors on the rise HOME MAGAZINE I JULY 31 - AUGUST 6, 2018

Approximately one hundred years after the invention of the tractor, farmers are being introduced to the latest innovation in farm vehicle technology — driverless tractors. The idea of a driverless tractor isn’t actually new. In fact, the first driverless tractor was invented as early as 1940. Only in the last several years, however, have tech companies really begun to explore the possibility of marketing fully autonomous tractors to farmers. Recently, leading agricultural tech companies like John Deere, Fendt and Case IH have all unveiled prototypes of self-driving tractors at farm shows across North America. Farmers typically use tractors to haul products and equipment and perform tasks like tilling and seeding their fields. Driverless tractors can perform all these tasks, but without the presence of a human driver to direct their movements. These vehicles are programmed to determine their own speed, avoid obstacles in their path like people and animals and use GPS technology to navigate the farm landscape. Many can even attach themselves to seeders, sprayers and other equipment without human assistance. Depending on the model, driverless tractors can be controlled and monitored from a desktop computer or by remote control, freeing farmers to concentrate on other tasks.

Experts predict that the agriculture industry will use fully automated machines more and more to optimize farm operations, cope with labour shortages and improve working conditions for agricultural workers. Along with other new technologies in farming like drones and ag robots, driverless tractors provide us with a glimpse of what the future of agriculture may look like.
