Agriculture and the economy Many people rely on the agriculture industry for their foods, but think little of the impact that agriculture has on the larger economy. However, data indicates that agriculture can serve a significant role in the process of solidifying the economy of a country, particularly developing nations. Agriculture also can contribute to the economic prosperity of advanced countries. IPP Media points out that the economic history of many developed countries indicates that agricultural prosperity contributed heavily to their economic advancement. When the basic food supply is strong, the national economy can be strong as well. Particularly in the early days of the United States, farming held a crucial place in establishing the American economy and culture, and still shapes the country today. Many states find that farming and other agricultural pursuits contribute much to the local and national economy. For example, new research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin-Extention show that agriculture is a powerful economic force in Wisconsin. Agricultural businesses help generate more than $83 billion in activity and have created more than 400,000 jobs in that state. The public should not disregard how strong a factor agriculture can be in establishing a strong economic environment. Safeguarding agricultural jobs and the agricultural industry is crucial to economic stability. TF185006

People who live in cities, exurbs or suburbs may not come across farms very frequently. But millions of people, including children, still live on farms. In fact, in 2009 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that more than one million children under the age of 20 lived, worked or had a regular presence on farms in the United States. Protecting children from injury on farms, especially those who perform work on farms, is of paramount importance. The American Society of Safety Engineers offers the following safety tips to parents of children who will be spending time on farms. • Know and obey the laws. Consumers depend on various agricultural producers to provide the fruits, vegetables and meat and dairy products they rely on for sustenance. The conditions in which livestock are sometimes housed and cared for is a cause of concern for many such consumers. However, farmers who understand that their livelihoods depend on the health of their animals often do their best to keep their livestock healthy and comfortable. Animal agriculture is evolving as animal scientists, veterinarians and farmers seek ways to provide for animal health and welfare. At the same time, farmers are seeking ways to minimize the negative impact these changes can have on employees and the environment. Group housing Veal production has long been a point of contention among animal welfare activists. The traditional option has been keep calves alone in “veal crates,” which are small and provide limited movement. Many veal farmers have slowly transitioned away from veal crates, says the organization Animal Smart. Group pens and indoor barns are climate-controlled and allow calves to stay together. Some farms even afford the calves some outdoor time for fresh air. Group housing is more social and less restrictive for the calves. According to the American Veal Association, veal farmers spent more than $50 million over 10 years to transition to these group housing systems. Calves can stand, stretch, lie down, groom themselves, and benefit from year-round ventilation to thrive. Furthermore, milk-fed calves raised for veal are raised until age 22 weeks, and marketed at 500 pounds, which is much older and larger than many people likely know, according to AVA. Great strides are being made to ensure that livestock are provided humane living conditions and environments to keep them comfortable and safe. TF185004

Battery cages Many people are concerned about the welfare of hens spending time in battery cages. These cages prevent hens from fighting with one another, but they also put the birds in Larry Wenzel Estate very tight quarters. Battery cages were often coveted because their sloped floors allowed clean eggs to roll away into collection areas, making the process less laborintensive. Farmers are trying to find a balance between keeping eggs clean and birds safe while providing humane living conditions without affecting the cost of eggs. In some areas, such as the European Union, battery cages are LOCATION: 26162 Biscayne Ave., Farmington, MN 55024 From Farmington MN take Hwy. 3 south to 255th St. or 80, go east no longer in use. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), approximately 125 tractor-related deaths occur each year, making this the largest cause of farm fatalities in America. Tractor safety practices should be rigorously upheld to prevent tragedies from occurring on your own farm. Here are ten guidelines intended to keep workers — and everyone else — out of harm’s way. 1. Know your tractor. Be well acquainted with the owner’s manual and recommended daily maintenance checks. Mount and dismount only as specified by the manual. 2. Use tractors with rollover protection structures (ROPS) whenever possible. The majority of tractor fatalities are caused by overturns, but wearing a safety belt in conjunction with having an ROPS can prevent deaths. 3. Drive safely. Avoid dangerous terrain (ditches, holes, embankments, steep slopes, etc.) or proceed only with extreme caution. Refrain from making sharp turns. When on public roads, avoid riding on the shoulder, follow safety protocols and be mindful of impatient drivers.

Never let anyone ride a tractor besides its designated operator.

4. Never start a tractor in an unventilated, enclosed structure. Carbon monoxide is lethal in confined areas.

Ten rules for the safe use of tractors on farms

Industrial Rd.

5. Use power take-off (PTO) shields. Replace before use if damaged or missing. 6. Only hitch loads to the drawbar. Hitching to anything else (axle, seat bracket, etc.) can cause the tractor to backflip. 7. Never leave an unattended tractor running. Be sure to also remove the keys from the ignition if there are children on the farm.

8. Only refuel when the engine is cool. Gasoline is both flammable and explosive in its vapor form. 9. No passengers! Most tractors only have one seat, meaning only the operator can safely ride the vehicle. 10. Operators should pace themselves and be cautious. Avoiding haste can prevent overturns. Taking regular breaks will allow operators to remain mentally alert. In addition, wearing appropriate footwear and clothes that won’t snag is a must.

Bringing the farm closer to America’s schools Is there anything more scrumptious than fresh veggies, succulent fruit, hearty whole grains and energyboosting lean meats? Kids across the United States (an estimated 23.6 million of them, to be more precise) are eating more and more wholesome, locally sourced ingredients thanks to a nationwide movement that invests in the well-being of America’s youth. Farm to School, an initiative commissioned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is making a big impact on the health of students and local economies alike. By bringing fresh, nutritious foods to school cafeterias across the country, Farm to School helps develop positive eating habits among youth in both rural and urban communities. The movement aims to combat childhood obesity by encouraging kids to eat healthier and to avoid those processed menu items that are high in sugar, sodium and trans fat. And that’s not all — the positive effects extend far beyond the school cafeteria. Farm to School also works to stimulate local economic growth by supporting small-scale farmers and promoting traditional, all-natural foods from tribal communities nationwide. In fact, it extends market opportunities for agricultural producers of all kinds. During the 2013–2014 academic year, schools purchased nearly Huge Household & Consignment $790 million in local food from farmers, ranchers, fishermen, food processors and manufacturers. That’s a 105 percent increase compared to the 2011– Location: Kato Auction House 1529 1st Ave. Mankato 2012 school year!
