A VERY WARM

WELCOME

Over a decade ago, Nelson Mandela stood on the balcony of the SA embassy in London’s Trafalgar Square and looked over a sea of freezing cold South African faces. “I love you all so much,” he said, “I want to put you in my pocket and take you home.” We all roared and wept. I returned home to a continent alive with possibility, and haven’t looked back. Every generation believes that they will be the one to change Africa. But our generation is blessed with being alive during a time of unprecedented economic growth. This is Africa’s moment. This is your moment. We welcome the companies and speakers who have travelled from afar to show you the real opportunities on offer, especially our platinum sponsor, Barclays Africa, and silver sponsor, Standard Bank. We welcome all our brothers and sisters from around the world as we share together our very bold vision of creating a massive wave of skills-repatriation for our beloved continent. It was Madiba who reminded us, “It always seems impossible until it is done”. I wish you all a wonderful event of networking, career-climbing, fact-finding, idea-sparking and homecoming. Here’s to Africa getting her skills back!

THE SUN IS RISING ON A NEW DAWN IN AFRICA, REQUIRING TOP SKILLS AND STRONG LEADERSHIP There are thousands of talented Africans abroad who have a deep sense of belonging to their homeland; unique knowledge of the nuances of different business culture; international expertise; a global network; a sense of philanthropy and an entrepreneurial spirit. These individuals are invaluable for societal and economic success. These individuals are YOU. “You need Africa and Africa needs you.” Originally established in South Africa in 2003 as an NGO, Homecoming Revolution is now a commercial entity with a footprint in London, Washington DC, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, Nairobi, Accra and Kampala. Homecoming Revolution is facilitating panAfrican skills repatriation by providing a one-stop platform that showcases real opportunities back home for African diaspora professionals including careers, property, schools, relocation services, investments and entrepreneurial opportunities. To date we have hosted over 34 international events and had over a million visitors to our website, with face-to-face engagement with 15 000 Africans abroad. The brain drain has officially reversed in SA. New figures show that 359 000 highly skilled South Africans have returned home in the past 5 years. We share this same vision for the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. Through our proven track record of bringing together the diaspora, the public and private sector, the media and homecomer communities, Homecoming Revolution provides a key platform to connect great talent & customers with real opportunities back home.

WHO SHOULD ENGAGE WITH HOMECOMING REVOLUTION? AFRICANS LIVING ABROAD Whether you are ready to return home or not, there is huge value in joining our community. Not only will you receive ongoing content on what’s cooking on the continent, but you’ll also be kept up to date on exciting career and property opportunities, investment prospects, and networking events. Plus, you’ll be able to read other people’s personal accounts of the highs and lows of returning home.

CORPORATES From immediate talent resourcing, building a pipeline and showcasing your employer brand, to networking with key business leaders and marketing diaspora products & services – there are many invaluable business and branding opportunities for the private sector.

GOVERNMENTS The repatriation of African diaspora skills has huge societal and economic impact on any nation. We have some ideas on how best to leverage the diaspora as regards repatriation, entrepreneurship & investment, and we’d love to work together.

MEDIA Homecoming Revolution has been built around story-telling. The more personal the stories of returnees are, the more it helps others make the move. Please help us spread the message. We’ve also got lots of meaty stats and case studies to share.

HOMECOMERS If you are an African who has lived abroad and have returned to your homeland, then we would like to hear from you. Your story can play a strong role in motivating others to return home.

EXISTING DIASPORA COMMUNITY GROUPS As the African proverb goes, “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. We would like to collaborate with as many different groups as possible.

THE ONE-STOP PLATFORM FOR AFRICAN TRUE STORIES: “Don’t wait until it gets better, come home and make it better”. We have many different case studies, video stories and quotes from African professionals who’ve returned home – the best bits, the worst bits, the insights. The best bits about returning home include fulfilling your purpose, friends and family, a sense of belonging, an outdoor lifestyle and an innovative career. “There’s nothing more important than having grannies and grandpas close by” The worst bits about returning include frustrations with electricity, bandwidth and traffic. It’s not that easy to settle in quickly, and there will be times that you question your decision. TOP SPEAKERS: From sporting heroes, to business leaders, to entrepreneurs, to entertainers, to politicians – our top speakers talk about their own homecoming journeys, while also portraying a realistic view of the socioeconomic landscape. CAREER PORTAL: An online resource for candidates and corporates, the career portal showcases key opportunities on the continent across all sectors. We invite businesses that need skills to feature their requirements on the portal – the more detailed the job spec, the better. We invite African professionals to keep a close eye on the portal and register their CV for positions that excite them. GLOBAL EXPOS: Our global expos are the perfect place for African diaspora professionals to meet top employers face-to-face, hear great speakers, be inspired by wonderful homecoming journeys and attend helpful workshops. Attendees are able to walk around asking key questions and get advice about property, schools, relocation services, immigration advice, entrepreneurial opportunities and investments back home. Businesses are able to access top African talent in a face-to-face feelgood environment for immediate resourcing, future pipeline and employer branding. What’s more, the expo is the perfect marketing environment to showcase products & services to the African diaspora. It’s also a great way to build a patriotic reputation with African governments, create loyal branding sentiment with the public & media, and network with key business leaders and entrepreneurs. Oh and did we mention that small little fact about creating social and economic prosperity for Africa, and changing the world! NICHE EVENTS: From special corporate talent dinners, to “home for the holidays” events, to networking breakfasts, to strategic thinktanks, to research filming sessions, to tailored embassy road tours, Homecoming Revolution has hosted over 34 events around the world.

DIASPORA SKILLS REPATRIATION WORKSHOPS: In an intimate and interactive environment, delegates are able to get practical knowledge and advice on careers, relocation, entrepreneurship, property and investments. The London Expo 2014 Careers workshop, hosted by Frances Mensah Williams of Reconnect Africa, will give you invaluable advice on the African job market, job search strategy, writing a powerful CV, building networks and finding a job in today’s competitive environment. All workshop attendees will receive a FREE pre-launch copy of the new book, “I want to Work in Africa: Moving your Career to the World’s Most Exciting Continent” The London Expo 2014 Relocation workshop, hosted by Elvina Quaison of Silk Solutions, will give you all the tools, facts and checklists on how to move home, be it in two weeks or two years. DIASPORA MARKETING: With our extensive reach into various diaspora groups and homecomer communities, plus in-house design and key strategic marketing knowledge, Homecoming Revolution provides a number of online, PR, event and partnership platforms to find top African talent & customers. Angel Jones, founder of Homecoming Revolution, was the co-founder of Morrisjones, a successful advertising agency which operated in Johannesburg for ten years – creating brands that include kulula.com, Debonairs Pizza and Discovery. TALENT SERVICES: This ranges from talent mapping, attraction campaigns, candidate dinners, pre-screen, search & engagement, candidate events and employer branding materials. Depending on your brief, budget and timing needs, we can create a tailored solution with our best of breed partners to fulfill your talent needs.

Homecoming Revolution commissioned the Madiba portrait project from different artists. During the week of his mourning we posted these on social media, inviting people around them world to choose one for their profile picture.

At that time, the world was unsure about what to think of South Africa, with many different messages being sent out by various sources. This did very little to build the country’s brand and it was evident that to attract tourism and investment there was a need to co-ordinate marketing initiatives to make them more effective. This led to the creation of Brand South Africa, whose main objective is the marketing of South Africa through the Brand South Africa campaign. There are many benefits to having a consolidated brand image, with the most important being that a consistent Brand South Africa message creates strategic advantages in terms of trade and tourism for the country in an increasingly competitive marketplace. www.southafrica.info

GOGETTERS GoGetters is a social enterprise and our mission is to be the bridge between Africans from Diaspora and the business opportunities within Sub-Saharan Africa. Our programme will increase the number of problem solvers from the Diaspora who go to Sub-Saharan Africa and establish successful businesses. We believe that encouraging problem solvers from the Diaspora can bring local benefits and help drive Africa towards the direction it most desperately needs. However, it must be dealt with and managed effectively to ensure these benefits become a reality. Currently we are launching our pilot project, we have 8 founding members all traveling on different dates to different locations, on an adventure to discover opportunities, build relationships, conduct research, validate ideas, and find out what works and what doesn’t. The GoGetters hypothesis is that “people from the Diaspora are enthusiastic in starting a business in Sub-Saharan Africa, but negative perceptions, lack of knowledge and networks, act as barriers”.

GoGetters are investigating the most efficient ways to lower these barriers and manage the influx of go-getters from the Diaspora. www.go-getters.co.uk GROUP FIVE Group Five is a diversified construction, infrastructure concessions and related services group engaged in resources, energy, real estate and infrastructure delivery. SOUTH AFRICA: THE GOOD NEWS Africa: The Good News and South Africa: The Good News are news websites that highlights the positive developments in Africa and South Africa. We are an independent organisation, apolitical and with no agenda other than to source and publish good news about our beloved country and continent. We like to stimulate dialogue and debate. We like to offer a fresh perspective. We are well aware of the challenges that we face and the extent of these challenges. We address these challenges full on, but we choose to concentrate on the solution, rather than the problem. Our goal is to address this reality/perception gap that is often more negative than positive as well as ‘sell’ South Africa and Africa as a continent of positive development, excitement, opportunity, interest and as a potential travel and investment destination. We celebrate the good and confront the bad. www.sagoodnews.co.za
