A message from the CEO: Congratulations to all elected June 14

Bryce Johnson HBA CEO

HBA of F-M values its working relationships with local elected officials in the F-M metro area as well as those at the state and national levels. We appreciate coming together with them when the building industry faces an issue rather than acting as adversaries. Our leaders, staff and I strive to get to know those running for office and those who serve.

The June 14 North Dakota primary was action-packed. Available seats in West Fargo were uncontested. We look forward to continuing a strong relationship with West Fargo Commission President Bernie Dardis. We welcome Roben Anderson to the commission (having connected with him in a prior campaign) and congratulate Commissioner Brad Olson on his reelection. Even thought the seat for commission president (mayor) was uncontested, we are especially thankful for the work of Dardis and that he chose to run for a second term. This continues a vision of smart and affordable growth that has been his hallmark for years.

Aug. 3: Join us for lunch with West Fargo Commission President Dardis

August’s Building Industry Connect will feature West Fargo Commission President Bernie Dardis, who was recently reelected for a second term. We are thrilled that he is once again serving our community! Register at hbafm.com and click “calendar,” or call (701) 232-5846. Cost is $25 and includes lunch. The HBA of F-M’s Building Industry Connect sessions are

In Horace, two council members were elected: Stephanie Landstrom and Sarah Veit. Horace is a community growing by leaps and bounds and our industry is highly engaged in providing the necessary housing and commercial development. Your Association is ready to be a resource and willing to help wherever needed. As you know, your HBA closely monitored Fargo’s commission and mayoral races, hosting candidate panel meetings, sharing recordings, and ultimately supporting the campaigns of Mayor Tim Mahoney, Commissioner Dave Piepkorn and Denise Kolpack. Thank you for supporting them! All were successful. Now we have our sights set on Nov. 8 which will determine seats in North Dakota Legislature, Cass County districts 10, 11, 13, 21, 27, 41, 44 and 45; as well as two races for Cass County Commission. In Minnesota, winners of these races will be elected Nov. 8 because Clay County cities do not have a primary election: • Moorhead Mayor; • Moorhead City Council (four wards will elect one councilmember); • Dilworth Mayor; • Dilworth City Council (two seats); • Clay County Commission; • Minnesota House of Representatives District 4B. Stay tuned! If you would like to engage in our advocacy and election efforts, please reach out to Elizabeth Kosel at (701) 232-5846 or elizabeth@hbafm.com.

Would you love to save money? North Dakota employers are eligible to apply for Safety Incentive Programs (SIP) through Workforce Safety & Insurance and receive discounts by participating in various programs. Companies who are enrolled in the programs and actively participating in the SIP can receive a maximum discount of 25% on your premiums. The purpose of the SIP is to recognize and correct safety hazards in the workplace to prevent injuries and illnesses, and ultimately have all employees go home safety at the end of the day. Learn the ins and outs of what is possible for your company from Melissa Olheiser, occupational health and safety technician (OHST) and regional manager, and Jennifer Erickson, associate safety professional (ASP) OECS + OSHA Environmental Compliance Systems. They will walk through the two SIP programs available to you as an employer and answer questions.

OECS is not OSHA. They are professional consultants who conduct training and help builders and contractors comply with OSHA regulations. For 30 years, OECS has helped create safe work environments for thousands of employees throughout the Midwest. They go beyond compliance, helping you build a strong safety culture that keeps employees returning home safe. Your company’s bottom line will benefit, too, with gains in employee satisfaction, retention, quality, productivity, cost and schedule performance.

Home Builders Association of F-M 1802 32nd Ave S Fargo, ND 58103

NAHB Area 10 Caucus Report On June 18, Area 10 members (ND, SD, MN, IA and WI) met to discuss national and state updates at the 2022 National Association of Home Builders’ Spring Leadership Meetings in Washington D.C. Talking points included:

John Gunkelman Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc. NAHB Senior Life Director

Registration for the International Builders’ Show 2023 in Las Vegas opens Sept. 1. • The upcoming IBS will combine the kitchen and bath with the hardware show at the convention center. They are planning to have shuttles to the surfaces show which includes carpet, counters, etc. at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. • Sales are up 11% for the show!

The Associates Committee is now going to have their own shop talks. This is similar to NAHB’s IDEAS app which provides news, trends, and techniques for the industry.

12

Regarding construction codes and standards, there are four people with seats on the code’s council. There is a 79% success rate. • Something to keep an eye on and an ear out for are accessory units. While they aren’t very common here, they are popping up in other states in Area 10. These are structures in a backyard that are then being used for rental properties. Aug. 15 is the voting deadline to get building officials registered for cdpACCESS. This is where they can be registered to vote remotely on building codes. There was discussion around having an Area 10 summit on career academies to discuss what is working and what isn’t. Minneapolis would likely be the location because of its centrality and there’s a chance the HBA of F-M is going to be asked to be a part of advisory committees. HBA of F-M members who participated in the caucus meeting along with me include: HBA Immediate Past President and NAHB Delegate, Kim Hochhalter, Building Concepts, Inc.; NAHB Alternate National Director and HBA Director, Mike Lemke, Lemke Home Improvements, Inc.; and HBA President and NAHB Delegate David Reid, Radiant Homes. Present on the panel was NAHB Senior Life Director Don Dabbert, Jr., Dabbert Custom Homes.
