The Surprise of Pascha

Although Jesus Christ foretold His

ples did not fully understand or believe. When they laid Him in the new tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, they were surprised to find His body not there upon their return. In fact, you will remember, on the way to the tomb the women discussed the epic task of rolling away the stone from the door. Knowing the end of the story, it is hard for us to realistically estimate the real surprise of Pascha.

But the surprise of Pascha has not ended. With the coming of each Paschal season, we are reminded again of some significant surprises.

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Iam so proud of our Parish, and especially our youth from our Greek and Sunday Schools, for participating and marching in the Annual Greek Independence Parade in New

At this writing, we are looking forward to praying together as a Parish with our families, friends, and guests on Palm Sunday as well as all of Holy Week and Holy Pascha. In preparation, our church is being cleaned, and beautifully decorated by all of our tireless volunteers and organizations. We thank you all for your generous donations and contributions throughout this Lenten period and for Holy Week.

the pastries for our festival. Please set aside some of free time to come and help them out. We are looking for more volunteers and more sponsors for our Olympiad Festival, please contact me or the church office if you are interested in volunteering. This is our single, and most important, fundraising event, and we appreciate and thank you for your patronage so that we may continue to share our faith and God's bountiful blessings of good food, great company, and memorable times. All this would not be possible without the dedication of our hard working volunteers, which consist of parishioners of various ages.

Yours Truly,

Notes from the Choir Loft

“S

inging in a choir is an absolutely unique experience. It is one of the most important things in the world. Where else do you have everyone doing the same thing at the same time without the use of special equipment and for a greater purpose, and no one is sitting on the bench?"

Kali Anastasi! As we prepare for Easter, we pray, we fast, and we sing! The beautiful hymns of Easter are inspiring, symbolic, meaningful, and are tools the Church gives us to help us find our way closer to God. One such hymn, the hymn of The Kassiani, is sung by the choir on Holy Tuesday.

Kassiani was a nun and one of the world’s most renowned Byzantine poets at a time when women were discouraged from singing or writing in the church. She wrote about a sinful woman who seeks the Lord and painfully reveals her heavy heart to Him. She comes to Christ weeping, lamenting her sins, pleading to be forgiven. Kassiani’s words and dramatic music reflect both the depths of the woman’s plea and the unconditional love of Christ, the Lord.

The Hymn of Kassiani

“O Lord, the woman who had fallen into many sins, perceiving Thy Divinity, fulfilled the part of a myrrh-bearer; and with lamentations she brought sweet-smelling oil of myrrh to Thee before Thy burial. 'Woe is me,' she said, 'for night surrounds me, dark and moonless, and stings my lustful passion with the love of sin. Accept the fountain of my tears, O Thou Who drawest down from the clouds the waters of the sea. Incline to the groanings of my heart, O Thou Who in Thine inef-

fable self-emptying hast bowed down the heavens. I shall kiss Thy Most Pure feet and wipe them with the hairs of my head, those feet whose sound Eve heard at dusk in Paradise and hid herself for fear. Who can search out the multitude of my sins and the abyss of Thy judgments, O Savior of my soul? Despise me not, Thine handmaiden, for Thou hast mercy without measure."

We want to thank everyone again who attended our joint concert with the choir of Saint Barbara Church in Orange. To listen to the concert please visit their YouTube page @stbarbaragoc and search for “Let My Prayer Arise: Songs and Hymns for the Lenten Journey.

We hope you enjoy the special Easter hymns we sing this time of year in anticipation of the Resurrection, and we invite you to sing or follow along with us during the services.

As always, we invite anyone who enjoys singing, or being an active participant in our church service, to come join us in the loft. Our choir family would be happy to have you join us! There is no need to read Greek, as our music is written in phonetics, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll

pick it up! You can come up to the loft any Sunday and join us! Rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm.

Also, we would like to invite any children/youth of our community, in 4th grade or higher, to come up to the choir loft at the beginning of the service, and stay with us until communion. (As a reminder, the Liturgy

starts at 9:30 am). This would be a great opportunity for a young person to learn a little bit about the service and hymns and join us in participating in the service. Reach out directly to Joanna or simply come on up to the loft.

Junior Choir meets on Sundays directly after services in the Choir room. (High schoolers are welcome to reach out to Joanna to inquire about community service hours, too.)

For any questions about Choir, please feel free to ask a choir member or you can email our Director, Joanna Bogardus, at djbogardus@att.net or call or text her at 203-6504204.

We are stronger when we sing together! Together let’s #filltheloft!

Happy Easter to all!

DDaughters of Penelope

aughters of Penelope continues to work hard with our philanthropy. We are currently conducting a toiletry drive collecting shampoo, individually wrapped soap bars, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. These items were the most needed at the Under the Bridge distribution. This drive is going on through the month of April, and items will be handed out soon after to needy citizens. A donation box is placed in the back entrance of the church.

Our Mother’s Day raffle is underway! You have the opportunity to win one of 10 beautiful planters by purchasing a $10 raffle. Look for us after church when we will be selling them. Drawing will be on Mother’s Day, May 12. This event is part of our

scholarship fundraising. We offer a scholarship to a student entering college who is preferably connected to the DOP/AHEPA family. We encourage students to apply!

At our last DOP meeting, we hosted the District Governor, District liaison, and two fellow officers. We discussed our chapter, and they filled us in on district news and upcoming events. They also awarded us the “chapter with the most reinstated membership award” in 2022! It was a wonderful, informative evening, and we enjoyed their joining us.

One of our most gratifying events is gathering as a group to assemble food baskets for a very Happy Easter for 14 local families. By the generosity of our members and friends of our chapter, we include all sorts of Easter goodies, pantry staples

and baked items. This gathering will take place before Easter.

Knitting group has started meeting in person on Wednesday evenings at 6:45. It’s a fun time for all. Knitted items are given out to local, needy organizations, plus beautifully created baby blankets are given during 40 day blessings to babies in our parish. Knitting is open to all. (The service is Matins and Divine Liturgy of Sunday morning sung Saturday midnight. With this serv ice the Pentecostarion starts.)

Ο

n Easter Sunday, (Saturday Midnight) the life-giving Resurrection of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated." Before the beginning of the service (before 12:00 midnight) the Odes of Lamentation of the previous day are repeated. The Matins of the Resurrection begins when all the lights are out, and in complete darkness. The Priest takes light from the vigil light and gives it to the faithful, who are holding candles. The Priest sings, "Come ye and Receive Light from the unwaning light, and glorify Christ, who arose from the dead," and all the people join him in singing this same hymn again. From this moment every Christian holds the Easter candle lit as a symbol of his vivid, warm faith in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ as Savior. In the midst of this illumination, the Priest holds the Icon of the Resurrection of Christ and with the people sings the song of exaltation: "The angels in Heaven praise Thy Resurrection, O Christ, our Savior; make us on earth worthy with pure hearts to glorify Thee." In many Churches the Priest leads the people outside the Church where he reads the Gospel (Mark 16, 1-8) which refers to the Angel's statement, "He is Risen; He is not here."

by death tramping upon Death, and has bestowed life upon those in the tombs." From this moment the entire service takes on a joyous Easter atmosphere. The hymns of the Odes and Praises of Resurrection are of a superb meaning and expression. The people confess, "It is the Day of Resurrection, let us be glorious, let us embrace one another and speak to those that hate us; let us forgive all things and so let us cry, Christ has arisen from the dead." By this hymn they admit that love of one's fellow man is the solid foundation of the faith in the Resurrection of Christ.

"C HRIST HATH RISEN FROM THE DEAD ..."

THE DIVINE Liturgy of Chrysostom is officiated; the reading of the Gospel is from Acts 1,1-8, where the Resurrected Jesus Christ exhorts His disciples, saying, "Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." The Gospel is from St. John 1,1-17, "In the beginning was the LOGOS (Word) and the LOGOS was with God, and the LOGOS was God," which continues as a fathomless depth of meaning of the Incarnation in connection with the Crucifixion and Resurrection of the Ever Lasting LOGOS, the Son of God.

At this time, a breathless moment prevails among the people waiting for the Priest to start the hymn of Resurrection and to join him in singing, repeatedly "Christ has Risen from the dead,

At the end of the Liturgy a part of the marvelous festival sermon of St. John Chrysostom is read, which calls upon the people to, "Take part in this fair and radiant festival. Let no one be fearful of death," he continues, "for the death of the Savior has set us free." "O Death," be challenges, "where is thy sting? O Hades, where is Thy victory? Christ is Risen and Thou are overthrown. To Him be glory and power from all ages to all ages."
