Pandemic Inspires Desire to Serve

On Saturday, July 25, after an extended delay, the Academy celebrated the 119 young women from the Class of 2020 at their graduation ceremony. Held on the AHN athletic field, the socially distanced ceremony maintained its beauty and honored tradition. While the 1st-grade flower girls sat the year out, faculty members Beth Chase and Jenny Van Pelt stepped in to hand out roses. As co-valedictorian Megan Hughes shared in her valedictory address, “The hand we were dealt had a major plot twist, but it didn’t stop us from staying connected to one another and seeing it through to the very end. And it won’t stop us from taking the next step into the rest of our lives, because the foundation of an Academy of the Holy Names education has shaped us into confident young women instilled with the grace and courage to make a positive impact on this world. What I’ve come to realize is that while we cannot change the circumstances in which we’ve been placed, the decision to act boldly anyway is what makes all the difference. What never ceases to be within your control is how you choose to respond to adversity. I firmly believe that the Class of 2020 will not be remembered as the ones that graduated during a pandemic; rather, the ones that stared at defeat and found hope.”

Together, the class was accepted into 146 colleges and universities, served more than 33,750 community service hours and had 81 alumnae graduate with honors, 62 who are members of the National Honor Society and six who are continuing their athletics in college. In total, 73% of the class was offered $14.5 million in scholarships, including 70% who qualified for Bright Futures.
