GOSPEL PROCESSIONAL THE COLLECT OF THE DAY We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish your rule of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD THE ENTRANCE RITE

THE LESSON: Jeremiah 31:15-17

At the sound of the bell, please stand.

Thus says the LORD: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more. Thus says the LORD: Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for there is a reward for your work, says the LORD: they shall come back from the land of the enemy; there is hope for your future, says the LORD: your children shall come back to their own country.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the wise men had departed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my son." When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, FORM VI

BCP, p 392

In peace, we pray to you, Lord God. Silence

Then would the waters have overwhelmed us * and the torrent gone over us;

For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.

Then would the raging waters * have gone right over us.

For this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace.

Blessed be the LORD! * he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.

For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; * the snare is broken, and we have escaped.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

Our help is in the Name of the LORD, * the maker of heaven and earth.

THE OFFERTORY OFFERTORY ANTHEM: Unclouded Day

Shawn Kirchner

Herod, the king, in his raging, Chargèd he hath this day His men of might, in his own sight, All young children to slay. That woe is me, poor child, for thee! And ever mourn and day, For thy parting neither say nor sing, "By by, lully, lullay."

O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies, They tell me of a home far away; And they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise; O they tell me of an unclouded day.

–– Coventry Carol, 16th c.

[Refrain] O the land of cloudless days, O the land of an unclouded sky, O they tell me of a home where no stormclouds rise; O they tell me of an unclouded day.

THE DISMISSAL

We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. All together Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant concludes with an absolution or a suitable Collect. THE PEACE A PRAYER FOR BIRTHDAYS O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on these your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A PRAYER FOR ANNIVERSARIES Grant, O God, in your compassion, that these your servants, having taken each other in marriage and affirming again the covenant which they have made, may grow in forgiveness, loyalty and love; and come at last to the eternal joys which you have promised through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

They tell me of a King in His beauty there, They tell me that mine eyes shall behold Where He sits on a throne that is bright as the sun In the city that is made of gold. [Refrain] –– J. K. Alwood (1885)
