On June 15th, students Jaden Faunteroy ’21 and Lola Hill ’21 along with other members of our student Diversity Committee, organized a special caravan protest for the Holy Child community to participate in. With over 100 participants from alumnae, current students, faculty, staff, and parents – it was a beautiful protest starting at Bethesda Elementary to Holy Child’s campus. For over four hundred years, we (Black men and women) have been fighting for our freedom and for our rights, but we are not done yet. We will not rest until justice is served, and we are truly free. We will not stop fighting until we are judged by the content of our character, not the color of our skin.
Our ancestors have instilled within us an unmatched resilience and strength that cannot be tamed. We will continue to protest and speak out until they feel us, until they can understand and recognize the pain in our voices, the pain in our eyes, and the pain that weighs heavily on our hearts.
As we, people of every race and culture, stand 10 feet apart yet still in solidarity, I realize that we must find a way to come together in order to change the world around us.
We are tired. Every single one of us is tired, but we have to keep pushing. Each generation has fought their own battles. This is our fight now, and we mustn’t succumb to the daily fear of standing up and speaking out because Black lives depend on us. Whether you are protesting or simply challenging the racist comments and people that sit at the very same dinner table, do not be silent. If you choose to be neutral in times of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. You are either with us, or you are against us.
To my fellow high schoolers, we have to step up. Soon we will be the politicians, lawyers, police officers, doctors, and businesspeople of this world and country. We must be the change we want to see. Hold each other accountable, have those difficult conversations, stand up against injustice, especially in times of discomfort. Sign petitions, pick up the phone, and check up on your Black friends and family. You are not alone in this fight.
We will continue to say their names. We will be heard! Justice will be served, and BLACK lives do MATTER! Rest in everlasting peace, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and sadly, many others.
