The Language of Truth: Our Upcoming Holy Days, Our Upcoming Holy Book

4

In Perspective

Rabbi John Moscowitz jmoscowitz@holyblossom.org

Yehudah Leib Alter, one of the great masters of late 19th century Hasidism, was especially adept at probing the human experience with the aid of insights from Judaism. The Gerrer Rebbe, Alter was known mainly as the “Sefat Emet”– the Language of Truth. He wrote a commentary on the Torah by that name, and the commentary’s name became his own – due in significant measure to his insightful teachings.

special and not, both but dust of the earth and little lower than the angels – in the World. Back to materiality of the world and to the Life of Holy Blossom Temple: We will likewise “transform spirit into matter” on Shabbat morning October 29, 2011 with the first use – a celebratory dedication and inauguration!

Here is what the Sefat Emet taught about the meaning of the words, “Rosh Hashana”: “The Head of the Year ” means before the flow of divine bounty is differentiated. When God sends life into this world, it enters under the rule of time and nature, becoming transformed from spirit to matter. But Rosh Hashanah is at the head, the source of that renewal, for within that source it as yet has no material form.” In other words, if the world began in spiritual form, it necessarily had to take on a material dimension. When God formed Life itself, time, nature, materiality became dominant; the Rabbi Moscowitz & Cantor Maissner

“We endeavour to draw closer to God and to our own spirits” spirit took something of a backseat. That was necessary for the World to be realized, for the primeval Adam to become B’nai Adam, corporal matter to evolve with the touch of God’s grace into full human beings. On the Holy Days, we move into a different time, as it were. Our goal during the Yamim Noraim is to hold back, at least temporarily, the reign of the material; we endeavor to unleash the spirit, to return ourselves to our essence, to our internal lives, to the Divine within. We do this with the help of the “Language of Truth” – the liturgy of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur which names us for who we are and reminds us of our place –

– of Siddur Pirchei Kodesh. This is no small achievement, and material as it is, our new book is animated by the spirit unleashed, by a belief that there is a yearning, a hunger for the spiritual about which the secular world is without clue or capability to capture. (See the information on pages 8-9; and our website for more on Siddur Pirchei Kodesh and October 29).

In both instances – on the upcoming Holy Days and in our soon to be launched Holy Book – we endeavour to draw closer to God and to our own spirits – through the best vocabulary we possess, that of the tradition and it’s Language of Truth.& Holy Blossom Temple

Holy Blossom Temple – Affiliation, Engagement and Our Future Mark S. Anshan president@holyblossom.org

The discussion and studies on synagogue affiliation are motivating synagogue leaders and Boards of Directors to think about this challenge and direct their energy and time to thinking and planning for the future. Our Board of Directors has been discussing our strategic plan (from 2005) and last year determined that Community Engagement would be the focus of the Board’s direction. Our plan is that the initiatives to be undertaken in Jewish Living, Education, Worship, Membership and Administration will all relate to reaching out to our members and engaging them in our synagogue life. Community Engagement is not only a strategic imperative; it is the critical challenge facing the future of our community. We know from demographic studies of the Jewish community that at some point in their lives, 60 to 70 percent of Jews join a synagogue. However, at any given time in North America only about 40 percent are members. In the Greater Toronto area, the number is about 50 percent but has been dropping over the last twenty years. We are planning several initiatives which you will hear about in the coming year to encourage our members to become more actively engaged in our community. At this point, let me mention briefly five areas of activity. David Berger, our Membership chair is building a team to launch new projects which we hope will motivate our members to become more involved and attract new members to join. Phyllis Denaburg has Bulletin • September 2011

begun to enhance the integration of our Jewish Living activities with a focus of reaching more of our members through varied programs. Our new siddur will become part of our worship experience with its launch on October 29th thanks to the remarkable work of its editor, Rabbi

“Community Engagement is not only a strategic imperative; it is the critical challenge” Splansky, the support of Rabbi Moscowitz and Cantor Maissner and the dedication of many years of hard work by Randi Garfinkel, Brenda Saunders and our Worship Chair, Sarita Dotan. This project has become a reality because of the generosity of the Plaut family (Rabbi Jonathan, Carol and Judith) and Hershell Ezrin and Sharyn Salsberg Ezrin. This fall we are holding three seminars for members to learn about how they can become involved in Temple life. Under the leadership of Sara Charney, this learning opportunity will focus on who we are and how to enjoy your membership. With the exciting news of Leo Baeck moving next year to the Arlington Public School, our Renewal Project is being revised and we will be sharing our new plans with the congregation this fall. With this Bulletin, we are introducing a new format which we hope you will enjoy. It will be one of our primary communication tools for further engagement of our members. Special thanks to Hugh Furneaux, Communications Chair for leading this effort. On behalf of the Officers and Board of Directors, I wish all our members a happy, healthy and sweet New Year. We look forward to seeing you in shul.&

From the Board

In the synagogue movements, particularly Reform and Conservative, there are serious discussions taking place on the level and extent of affiliation and the degree to which members are actively engaged in the synagogue to which they belong. Our own Reform movement is addressing this issue with its most recent restructuring. It has created a new model for delivering services to the nine hundred Temples in North America.

Holy Blossom Temple’s vast historical archive is organized and managed by Sheila Smolkin and Michael Cole. The archive photos shown here, taken in 1956, provide an interesting contrast to the more informal learning environment of today. The recent photo was taken in the Senior Kindergarten class and includes student teacher Sofia Ludwig.

School Tzedakah project raises $1500 for Zareinu Zareinu Educational Centre of Greater Toronto is a one-of-a-kind organization that offers adapted education and therapeutic treatments for children with a wide range of physical and developmental challenges--all under one roof. To celebrate its 20th year and honour the great work they do, each Sunday last year at Religious School, pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and the occasional loonie or toonie were donated by our students. As well, on Monday evenings at Senior School break, additional money was raised when teachers sold snack items to students. Through the generosity of all of our students Holy Blossom Religious School was able to donate $1500 to Zareinu for their many valuable projects and programs. Bulletin • September 2011

The following is an excerpt from the Introducation to

Another

kind

of

Renewal

Siddur Pirchei Kodesh, edited by Rabbi Yael Splansky.

Hermann Cohen taught that prayer is only real when it moves us from the “is” to the “ought,” when we leave the doors of the sanctuary changed and ready to make change

When you stand on the bottom of a ladder you check the first rung to see if it is sturdy and strong, and only then do you proceed to climb to the next rung. Such is the way with prayer. You must proceed step by step, rung by rung. (Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk)

in the world. Which prayers will catch fire, igniting in us a new or renewed clarity of purpose? Time will tell. It says a great deal about Holy Blossom Temple and its leadership that a new prayerbook was made a priority among the many needs of the congregation today. It says much about the place of worship in the life of our synagogue; we are a community sustained by Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim – in equal measure. This siddur is designed for a congregation that is intellectually curious and hungry for tradition. We want to know where we come from and to Whom we belong. With this siddur

Siddur Pirchei Kodesh is an invitation to construct one’s own ladder toward the Divine and to ascend in thought, belief, and action. Gathered in our sanctuaries, surrounded by the sounds of our tradition, and buoyed by the company of our people, we are likely to find much-needed comfort, direction, and joy. And yet, there are many real and imagined stumbling blocks on the way to sincere prayer. Some don’t (yet) read Hebrew. Some don’t (yet) know the melodies. Some feel estranged from communal ritual. Some fear they will be judged for what they don’t believe. Siddur Pirchei Kodesh is offered to overcome these obstacles, to open the prayer experience to our people and to open our people to the experience of meaningful prayer. This prayerbook is designed for the diverse community that is Holy Blossom Temple: seeker and skeptic, celebrant and mourner,

8

traditionalist and newcomer, agnostic and activist, learner and leader. All are invited to turn these pages and discover what compels us as Jews, the ideas or expressions of faith, which draw us closer to our God and to one another.

we declare ourselves to be an essential part of K’lal Yisrael, a loyal sister to those who live in Israel, devoted and contributing citizens of Canada. One of Holy Blossom Temple’s most admirable traits is its ability to carefully balance tradition and innovation. This attribute has kept our congregation always rooted, always relevant. The Siddur Committee – Rabbi Moscowitz, Cantor Maissner, Randi Garfinkel, Brenda Saunders and I – crafted this book with eyes on the past, the present, and the future of Holy Blossom Temple. It is our hope that it will meet the spiritual needs of our congregation for many years to come, that it will inspire devotion and growth for us as individuals and together as a sacred community. With great anticipation we will welcome Siddur Pirchei Kodesh into the pews of our sanctuaries on Shabbat morning, October 29, at 10:30 am. Please see the enclosed brochure for details on how to dedicate a volume with a bookplate, how to purchase a personal copy for home use or as a gift for loved ones. & Rabbi Yael Splansky ysplansky@holyblossom.org

Holy Sprouts

O

Our inaugural season of bringing weekly local organic produce to Holy Blossom has been a great success. Every Tuesday (2:30 – 6:30 pm) from June through October a Farmers’ Table goes up on the Bathurst Street plaza in front of our Main Sanctuary. With over one hundred families participating, it’s easy to see how food brings people together in joyful community. This initiative of the HBT Green Committee puts many Jewish values into action: good health for our bodies, good care for the environment, and good will for our neighbours who are hungry. Kathy Biase is the coordinator of the Wychwood Open Door, a three-day-a-week free meal program at St. Mathew’s United Church at St. Clair and Christie Street. Open Door serves one hundred meals a day, 16,000 in total last year. Each week

Representative Anthony Weiner:

12

Reflections

What

Do

We

Learn?

New York newspapers had quite the field day with the scandal that plagued now-former United States Representative Anthony Weiner. The papers – both on and offline – have preyed upon both the easily made double entendre pokes at his Jewish surname and the deeds and actions in the realm of illicit online exchanges which Weiner has admitted to over the past number of months. Incidentally, most often the Jewish surname Weiner comes from the Yiddish word vayner, which refers to a wine merchant. But while the headlines for the stories which utilized his surname made an impression, it is nevertheless the story underneath those headlines which fueled not only a personal scandal, but a public discussion of the limits of personal behavior for a public servant. Jewish tradition has warned that the kind of public discussion about Weiner’s indiscretion borders, if not fully smacks of, lashon hara, or disparaging speech. In the Torah we are instructed, “You shall not go up and down as a tale-bearer among your people.”1 In the Talmud we learn that tale-bearing includes speaking the truth. In his book The Wisdom of the Talmud, author BenZion Bokser teaches that one significant aim of the rabbis of our talmudic tradition was to “deduce general legal principles that would be applicable in new situations.”2 In this vein, it is the wisdom of our tradition indeed that we focus less on the particulars of this scandal and move instead to general lessons. Thus, I will not re-cap the controversy surrounding Weiner here or the commentary amassed in the past weeks since the scandal erupted and days since Weiner officially resigned from his office. Rather, I will reflect on what our tradition offers the individual at the center of indiscretion and mistake-making: teshuvah, or return/repentance. According to our tradition, repentance comes to those who first acknowledge their wrongdoing. As medieval ethical commentator Bachya Ibn

Rabbi Karen Thomashow kthomashow@holyblossom.org

Pakuda wrote in chapter six of Duties of the Heart, “The man who fulfills all the conditions of repentance… He perceives the greatness of his sins and errors and understands the distinction of Him whose orders he has disobeyed and whose commandments he has failed to perform.” Furthermore, according to our tradition, and in particular the also medieval text Midrash Pesikta Rabbati 44:9, repentance comes not only from one’s own actions but also the compassion of God: “…Consider the parable of a prince who was far away from his father-a hundred day’s journey away. His friends said to him: Return to your father. He replied: I cannot, I do not have the strength. Thereupon, his father sent word to him saying: Come back as far as you are able, and I will go the rest of the way to meet you. So the Holy One says to Israel [as written in Malachi 3:7]: “Return to me, and I shall return to you.” Finally, according to our tradition, repentance for our misdeeds is fully achieved when faced with the opportunity to commit the same transgression. As Maimonides, also our medieval teacher, wrote in the Laws of Return 2:2, “What is true repentance? When a person who confronts the same situation in which he sinned when he has the potential to commit [the sin], abstains and does not commit it because of his repentance alone.” I cannot help but note that former Representative Weiner has acknowledged his indiscretion – the first step towards repentance in our tradition. But again, that is not my or our concern. Our tradition has given us the wisdom to generate personal pause for learning from specific situations. That is what our concern is to be – nothing else. Shanah Tovah – may this season of repentance strengthen us all. & Originally appeared in Life at Holy Blossom; adapted with the High Holy Days in mind. [1]Lev. 19:16 [2] P. 9

Electing Our Board of Directors The Nominating process is mandated and guided by the bylaws of the Temple. The Nominating Committee is constituted each year for the sole purpose of presenting the congregation a slate of candidates for the Board. The Committee consists of at least ten members, none of whom may become candidates. This year the Committee met 6 times: • It reviewed the issues facing the Board, the expertise of current Directors, and identified areas which might be strengthened. That discussion led to a focus on youth, financial expertise, and communications experience, as was communicated in an earlier Bulletin; • It entertained in person input from the rabbinic leadership and the executive; • It met separately with the President and the Vice-President to review the performance of the Executive, and the Board; • It received in excess of thirty suggestions for nomination of new directors, from across the congregation, including the rabbinic leadership, and in addition continued to actively solicit potential nominees throughout the process; • It interviewed short list candidates, using a standardized interview format, based on careful deliberation of the issues it thought important to good governance. Fifteen were considered to fill seven positions; • It recommends the re-appointment of two current Directors eligible for re-election; • It has recommended that those short listed candidates not nominated to the slate be specifically and actively guided to greater involvement in Temple; • It has documented the process used this year as a potential template for future cycles and, as appropriate, integration into the new governance structure under consideration. Officers nominated for a one-year term:

• President: Mark S. Anshan Earl Lipson • Vice President: Gary Posen • Financial Secretary: Heather Crawford • Treasurer: • Recording Secretary: Tom Friedland Directors Nominated for a two-year term:

• Janice Babins • Owen Duckman • Eric Roher • Harris Silver • Phil Smith

Directors nominated for a second two-year term:

• Fern Lebo • Lisa Taylor Directors continuing to serve a second year of an elected two-year term:

• David Berger • Eric Beutel • Larry Ritchie • Phyllis Denaburg • Harvey Schipper • Joan Garson • Alison Schwartz

The Nominating Committee acknowledges and thanks those completing their terms as directors: Pam Albert, Hugh Furneaux, Gord Arbess, Susan Stronell, Bob Cooper.

According to our bylaws, additional candidates for any position may be nominated by members of the Temple. Nominations must be submitted in writing to the administrative office at the Temple no later than 60 days before the Annual General Meeting (by Wednesday Sept. 21st, 2011), signed by at least 10 members in good standing at the Temple and by the nominated member.
