reating is my passion. Whether it is designing, photography, or simply rearranging my living room furniture. My entire life, I have had a desire to make things that are my own. Things that I can be proud of and display for anyone willing to look at them.

My senior year of high school, I decided to do my senior project over pho-

tography. I then bought a camera, taught myself how to work it, and started to take photos of everything. After graduation, at the age of 18, I started the Media Design program at

STI and started my own photography business. I’m not going to lie, since I was a self-taught photographer, my photos were not the best in the beginning. But I knew that this was something that I loved, so I worked as hard as I could to get to where I wanted to be. Throughout the past two years, I have worked three jobs while also running my photography business and going to college. I worked so much because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to support myself when I only had one photo shoot booked every two months. Then, after having my business for about a year and a half, I made a huge decision. My skills were improving immensely, I had been doing some social media marketing, and I was starting to book more shoots. So, I quit my job working retail and decided to invest in my photography while also getting my

Media Design degree full time. Doing this was very risky, but I knew that if I wanted to be successful in my future, I needed to put all my time and effort in too these two things. Now, I am getting my education while also having 3-4 photo shoots every single week. I am so much happier and more successful than I ever was working my 9-5. I learned that taking the risk and working hard are two things that you need to be successful in life. I’m never going back to that 9-5 job

A Life of Design An interview with HenkinSchultz’s Jason Jellis Written & Photographed by Holly Richards

Graphic designer, HenkinSchultz partner, husband, dad, and car enthusiast. Those are just a few of the many titles that Jason Jellis goes by. Jellis graduated from Southeast in 1995 and started working at HenkinSchultz in 2002. Since working at Henkinschultz, he has taken on many different roles, and a lot of that is just him stepping in and helping out. He says, “Diversity is what makes my job really fun you never know what you’re doing to do tomorrow.”

It revolutionized the use of computers and virtually created the desktop publishing industry. Fast forward to Jason’s second year he started to dabble in a few more programs. Quark, which was the presider of InDesign, Photoshop, which was its own separate adobe program, and Freehand, which was its own company. Illustrator existed, but he says it was in its infancy. Once they put the Adobe creative suite together, he says it was really cool with how well they talked together. But, for Jason, it was a lot of on the job learning after all these new programs came out. He says, “You

A Foot in the Door

While finishing up his degree at Southeast Tech, Jason got an internship at a small print shop in Sioux Falls called Express Copy & Printing. After graduating, they hired him full-time, and he worked there for 7 1/2 years. Express Copy & Printing is where he really started to learn large format printing because they were one of the first companies in Sioux Falls to have a large format printer. At the time of Jason working there, they were doing some work for HenkinSchultz. Then, in 2002 he was offered a job at HenkinSchultz as a Graphic Designer and Quality

because he says it himself, he’s a perfectionist.

HenkinSchultz Partner After working at HenkinSchultz for nearly 14 years, Jason, and two of his colleagues got offered the positions of being partners in the company. When asked about how he got to that point in his career his response was,

He says, “There’s not really a line that we draw, because we’re here to help.” The individuals who work at HenkinSchultz aren’t just employees they are a group of problem solvers who are here to help make their client’s lives easier.

Advice Jason says, “That you can’t be afraid to fail, it’s a tough industry.” A day will come along when you have put your heart and soul into a design, and you show it to the client, and they want to see another option. He says this is heart-wrenching, but don’t let those comments take away from your passion. When these things happen, you just need to remember that it will be okay because the next thing will always be better.
